Alcohol Gel War against Contams (Trich)
    #1067148 - 11/19/02 06:06 PM (21 years, 4 months ago)

One has been using that alcohol that comes in the gel form (available everywhere and pretty inexpensive) to battle contams. One dips a stick into a bit of it and then touches onto the contams. Most of the time the contam lifts right out stuck onto the glob of alcohol. I wipe that off and then go back until I see no more contams and the area has been thouroughly dabbed in alcohol gel.

I am finding that it destroys much less of an area than say cutting out the contam. It seems to do a good job in not spreading the contam. It does not wreck my casing. I expose the tub to very little as I can just work through a small crack since I am using just a stick.

Not too scientific but it seems to work and I like the idea of using alcohol much better than say bleach in general and it works a zillion times better than H2O2 as far as actually killing the contam. Anyone hear of this?

It's at wally world for sure. It is marketed sometimes as a water free hand wash sometimes. Just be sure it's just alcohol. It is in the pharmacy section there near the H2O2.

Update. This is working. No contams recurring. Minimal casing damage or almost none. It's easy, it's cheap....

Great work

Looks like you may have found the next best thing in the war against contams, I'll have to try it out myself sometime!

I went and picked my squirrel up a bottle of that tonight, and told him to try it if the trich comes back on his one casing. I also picked him up some baking soda which was sprinkled around the edges that were cut out. Hopefully he wont have to find out if it works, but he probably will.

(i'm guessing it'll help prevent more contams from growing... am i right?)

still no recurrence of any contams. The area where I used the gel shows very little myc damage as well and now these tubs are kicking ass. This is the first time I have tried this in the particular way I did. Before I just rubbed the gel around into the contaminated spot. This was not as successfull aparently because there were still spores that didn't get hit by the gel. Using the get to first remove the contaminated spots by having them stick to the gel then removing, and then going back in and rubbing it in gently is what seems to be doing the trick. I don't know if I mentioned this but you deffinatly (obviously) need to do that before you mist otherwise you just send spores flying...

If you can't find it, you can also find it at a pet store, but I bet it's a lot more expensive. It's a reptile hand wash, so you don't get any diseases from reptiles after your done touching them. It's the same alcohol based get that you rub over your hands and then it dries. Doesn't that leave a residue though?

I have found it to leave a residue on my hands after using large quantities. Rubbing my hands together sort of balls it off and there is really not much of that.

Using it as a small glob on the end of a stick (chopstick) is just enough to grab the contam. Too much on the stick may drop where you may not want it to.

I dont get trich much either, I have only had it once. It is right now on some compost I am working with. It wont go away
I am going to give this gel thing a shot. The stuff I use though is for diabletics and has triclosan in it instaed of alcohol.  Lets see if it works, I dont have anything to lose right

Well let me tell you a few things about trich my friends. It is worse than republicans since you can just give them money and they go away....

I just live in a tiny house filled with humans on a farm...
I should charge trich rent...

Well, to be frank since I am at his house...
The gel thing still couldn't keep ahead of the trich in the second stretch. Part of the deal is that once it penetrates the casing layer one is forced to cut the shit out or lose the whole deal.
Anyway it does help some...I am sure more would have been lost without it and I like how it applies.

In retrospect I am thinking the most interesting thing is that when combined with blah's post in the advanced board it may be the best way to apply alcohol at all since the thing seems to be overall time that the stuff has to work on the nastys....and in get form it certainly has duration to it....

I would guess that this method would work well only on the surface layer, as when the contaminants penetrate the surface layer of mycelium/casing/substrate you have little recourse except to cut/cauderize the offending area out. To combat this, at least with cold weather species, it may be possible to pop the casings in the freezer for a few hours because the mycelium is more cold-resistant than the trich. I don't know of anyone who has tried this with cubes though...most data on thermal death relates to overheating, not freezing the mycelium to death.

Great thread by the way...
