What is the threshold for what we describe as tripping?

If someone takes a microdose of shrooms, do we still consider that as tripping

Or do we consider tripping to be when certain effects take place like visual distortions and whatnot?

Im curious to know what yall think

Ive taken some microdoses and went to the gym and have gotten killer workouts in, and Im wondering if yall would consider that "tripping"

If you have ever tripped you would know the difference. Perceptual changes would be what I would consider tripping.

ive taken microdoses that caused me to have morphing visuals. at that point, or the point at which i begin to have noticeably weird thoughts (weirder than usual, anyway) i would call that tripping. microdosing is supposed to not really be that noticeable.

I call it tripping when you start tripping out, and a few minutes later you go, "what was that?", and then it happens again and that can go on for hours.
it can be visual or other sensory, or even just mental nonsense.

Normally we are fairly well connected to a stream of consciousness that does not get side tracked so much like that for a few minutes at a time.

Often people tripping out seem to be staring, or still, but they may be engaged in turmoil and hard to calm down.

a micro dose is not likely to cause it, but 50 mics of lsd or 1.5 gm shrooms can do it to some extent.

I can feel a half gram of basic cubes. I start having closed eye visuals around a gram. I would consider taking a gram as lightly tripping but the half gram would be more of an oversized microdose if we need to categorize it. I'm a lightweight with mushrooms and dose in the 1-3 gram range, always. :mushroom2:

I feel like there's a zone during the onset where you're not quite tripping and not quite sober (getting stuck there would be a threshold dose) and beyond that there are more distinct visual and mental effects where it feels like "hey I'm tripping now."

In terms of open-eye visuals I feel as though I'm tripping properly when I see glyphs on the walls, like "word-soup." That seems to be a very consistent visual and a sign that I'm definitely tripping.

My closed eye visuals start with vague images and patterns but it feels like I'm tripping when they get more vibrant and oddly specific, like "rotating rooms bathed in the light of petroleum corporation advertising washing over them" (from a trip journal).

The kind of "mental nonsense" mentioned by redgreenvines also makes me feel like I'm tripping; when you have a thought and you realize how strange it is and you can tell the trip has kicked in. Like one trip started with closed-eye imagery of a quiet curved green corridor with a security guard wandering around, and I felt like he was there so if any hallucinations happened I could warn him, then realised how that made no fucking sense whatsoever.

i would like to tack on to the criteria i previously stated: the threshold between microdosing and tripping is the point at which i no longer feel it would be responsible of me to get in my car and drive

No, taking a microdose is not tripping. It also is not microdosing. You would trip on an active dose. Taking a microdose is the opposite and not even an active dose. More like 1/20 to 1/10 the amount.

Over the years people have often redefined what a microdose is. I've heard people say they have taken a 1 gram 'microdose' and it didn't perform as expected so they now take 2 gram microdose. :doh:

That causes confusion and people mistake a mini dose or a museum dose for a microdose because it is less than their usual 3.5/4.0 gram dose. That's tripping, not taking a microdose. And taking a microdose is not microdosing.

I saw old threads mention levels, like "level 3 trip turned into a level 4 trip..."

Im assuming that a micro dose is level 1 and a mini dose is level 2 and so on...

That would be incorrect. Level one would still be tripping, albeit at a low level. A microdose, assuming the traditional definition, is below that and you would not be tripping.

Sure, no problem.

I'll just add that words are words and they mean different things to different people. If your goal is to take a small amount of shrooms for a light trip, do that. And feel free to call that whatever you want based on what that means to you.
