Hello Fahster! Posting this to share here - it is a link to a 3D printing project that I made to keep 1-gallon zipblock bags from collapsing during fruiting. I've been able to make them stay up with a bit of finessing the bags without supports, but this was just a fun thing that I made to make it a bit easier. Works pretty good!

I love growing zipblocks & very much appreciate your sharing the method with the world.

Peace to you friend!

Thanks for the ziplock bag Tek! I use it regularly and it's great. On a side note.. the Tek has saved me at least $100 a year on cilantro.

I have two pet guinea pigs.

They require a sprig of cilantro every day. That said I buy a lot of cilantro. I tried storing it in an unmodified ziplock, it rots in 3 days. I tried putting the base in a jar of water, it's wilty by day 3. I tried storing it in a leftover ziplock fruiting chamber. I couldn't believe it, the stuff stays good for at least 2, sometimes 3 weeks :dancer:

Pretty awesome. Anyways, I thought you'd get a kick out of knowing you're Tek is saving somebody money, and preventing waste in a totally unintended way.

Unrelated but why cilantro? I have two piggies as well in the house.

I give them 4 types veggies a day, pepper, cucumber, lettuce, and cilantro. The one piggie was having stomach issues. This medley was suggested to me by the folks at the guinea pig forum. Since introducing this mix no more piggie upset stomach!🐹

I got a bunch of 10A unicorn bags from a friend. They are not big enough for my gourmets, so I was going to try to use them like you do the ziplocks. Anyone have advice on the best way to go about that?

Ziploc Tek – 1 mm pin instead of a 16G needle? [Re: fahtster]
    #29691844 -

Hey everyone! I'm trying Ziploc Tek for the first time, but I couldn't find a 16G needle (~1.65 mm). I only have a 1 mm pin.

Based on hole area, I'd need about 2.72 times more holes to match the original setup.

That would mean reducing the spacing:

Upper rows: From 5 cm (2") to 1.8 cm (0.7").

Lower rows: From 2.5 cm (1") to 0.9 cm (0.36").

Keeping the staggered pattern on both sides, that would give me over 160 holes per bag.

Does scaling the number of holes this way actually make sense for FAE? Or would you recommend keeping the original spacing even with a smaller pin?

Thanks!

I’d probably do a little less spacing than my original template and see how it does.  You can always add more holes later

You can simply stretch the holes slightly instead of adding more holes. Just hold the bag down and pull up slightly (careful not the bend the pin) to stretch the holes. Less is more for sure, since everyone's environment is different. You just have to see how they perform with standard stretched hole placement.

I got a bag of Sibu that is looking good, surface

But on the sides, it seems to be pinning all over.

Do I flip it so it has more area to pin from?

No need to flip or anything.  Just take that container off and pull the sides away from the block (push down on the top of the bag a little).  There, you just expanded your fruiting surface 4 fold.

Edit: So I stumbled upon a little hack yesterday.. instead of untaping the bags when there’s side pins, just pull the bag away from the top ends of the sub block and push down on the top of the bag.. the bag should have enough air in it to pull the bag away from the sides of the sub block but stop so when there’s still ~an inch of the bag still stuck to the bottom of the block… this shortens the height of the bag and creates a bubble around the block for the fruits to grow in..

You have to keep at least some of the bag attached to the block otherwise the bag will fall over, but when you keep it attached, the bag stays nice and supported
