humidity and sterility in the fruiting chamber
    #3331437 - 11/07/04 11:27 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

i'm transferring my dunked cakes into a rubbermade fruiting chamber tonight, and am concerned with the tek i've read regarding sterility.

talking about keeping the chamber humid:
"The best and easiest way to do this is by lining the bottom of the fruiting chamber with damp perlite. Wet it thoroughly with normal tap water, and let the water drain out. Then move the perlite into the fruiting chamber and smooth out the surface. You now have a layer of damp perlite that the cakes can be set directly on, and which will keep the humidity in the chamber high enough for the cakes to fruit."

if I do this technique, am I taking too much of a risk with contamination, either from the perilite or the tap water?

no it will be fine i did it its easy also sterility isn't quite as big a deal while fruiting cause cakes and casings can fight of contamns pretty well until later flushs (4-5)

No. but you'll have perlite everywhere. Those things stick to everything.

Just pour dry perlite into the chamber(about 2-3") and fill with about 1-1.5" of water. Just make sure you have at least 1" of perlite above the waterline. Spray down with mister as you load perlite into the chamber to help with the dust.

Add about half a bottle of H2O2 into the chamber and run the chamber however it's designed. If you are using pure perlite humidification, make sure you make a tight seal around the lid and no holes anywhere. After about 30min RH should be above 90%. You should be at 99% by 2 hour point.

You can still convert that to PMP if you want to. PMP takes the fanning and misting chores away from you. You can use perlite instead of geolite for PMP, too.
