Making chocolates, experience with microwave

Hi Shroomery,

I've been making making chocolates for a while now, following a tempered chocolate recipe, adding powdered shrooms, piping into molds.  a few days ago I had a scenario where I was a bit behind and put the piping bag ( containing mixed chocolate and shrooms) into the microwave to soften it up. Thinking it was all good I filled the molds, and then went onto make a second batch with no microwave involved.

come to last night, we tried the chocolates and had minimal effect.. very disappointing,
I've narrowed it down to the batch that was put in the microwave and a couple of us are currently trying the batch that wasn't in the microwave and so far its on point!.

So I've tried to search and haven't found anything of help, but does anyone have any anecdotal experience with a microwave negatively impacting shrooms? all I could really find in search was early attempts in 2000-2003 of trying to use the microwave to dry  and getting sloppy messes.

It is the heat degrading the alkaloids I would think, not microwaves as such just the heat generated. It is like baking cookies containing shroom powder in a conventional oven, the cookies would not be potent due to the heat destroying the actives.

Use one of these (or a thermometer) to check the temp of the liquid chocolate before mixing in the mushrooms, ideally you want to mix them in just before the chocolate solidifies

ReverendMyc did some Tests on how different temperatures affect active compounds.

So after rereading your method,  I would suggest melting the chocolate in The microwave, then taking it out and letting it cool to just about it's solidifying point, then add the powdered mushrooms and mix them in a bowl and then use a spatula to fit it into the mold.

I personally wouldnt use a piping bag just because it might solidify inside the bag and you wouldnt be able to pipe it

When i make my chocolate bars, I put them in the freezer to solidify and it works like a charm

Yeah, this is one of them situations where a bowl over a pot of simmering water really is the way to go.  Way way way easier to control the heat and get the chocolate to melting temp w/o getting it so hot that it degrades what you're puttin into it.  Not as fast, but sometimes, slow and steady really does win the race.

I like using dosing cups as molds. I weigh powdered mushrooms and chocolates to each individual cup and melt them in a pot of simmering water. Each chocolate has the same dose so no one gets an unintended face melt. Pistachios add crunch, improve mouthfeel and look damn pretty. The one with the cashew is infused with cannabis oil. I use different nuts to indicate what’s what.
And the cups make an interesting ice cube to add to cold brewed coffee.
I store them in the freezer. I make small batches of chocolates, they stay potent for months.
Doesn’t help with the microwave question but it does give an alternative method.

that was a thread necro, but I've since settled on a reliable method, note I still use the microwave to speed up the melting of chocolate as double boilers annoy me but now use a thermometer to ensure it's cooled to the right temp before adding the mushrooms and silk for tempering.

Regardless of how you melt your chocolate:

I have found that mixing your powdered mush with some coconut oil (cannabis infused if you have it) before mixing it into the chocolate allows you to get it better incorporated into the chocolate for a more uniform dosing.

I use 2x the coconut oil to mush.

Example 7g mush gets mixed with 14ml coconut oil
