how do you deal with overstimulation when taking a break from weed? * 2
    #29662087 -

i'm about a week and a half sober from weed. i know, it's comical how often i fall back into the trap of smoking again after swearing it off for good. this break had to happen. i was so fucking ripped from weed i could barely function, could barely even do drawing.

working on a project today with a fresh brain and i'm finding myself feeling anxious and restless and unable to focus. as much as weed made me a lazy piece of shit, it did allow me a greater degree of focus when working on certain projects. i'm missing that now, and feeling hella overstimulated and frustrated. caving and smoking weed is not an option, i would be so pissed at myself if i fucked up this break so early on. anyone else know what i mean? how do you make your brain shut the fuck up without just sedating it with more substances?

there always were, are, and will be distractions, keep calm and carry on with what you were doing.

Honestly lifting weights is great for blowing off steam.  You dont have to go heavy or even super hard, but there's a very short high after the exercise that is super enjoyable and it will tire your nervous system out enough that you can relax.

Coming from an ADHD and autism perspective what helps me is:

-caffeine
- going for a long walk then focusing afterwards
- yoga
- dancing really hard
- stimming like smacking my legs, humming, making random noises (this is autism though lol)
- getting up and doing something small but enjoyable then coming back
-i recommend looking up "dopamine menu" on the web. You can use small things as rewards and then go back and do 15 mins of your project
-tyrosine supplements
-sticking to schedules and routines
- having check lists

Some of these may not be as effective if you are neurotypical, but my bet is most will be helpful to some degree.

I would think it would be like quitting anything, although I quit smoking weed in the 70s after it was laced with PCP....not the route you would want to go.
Cigs were tough and getting out of the circumstances where you craved one or thought you needed one was helpful. Triggers like stress, wanting one after a meal or boozing it up were things I had to stay away from or deal with differently. Never used patches or pills just cold turkey. Although I quit 3-4 times I have been smoke free for 30+ and drink free for just as long.
If wed has become a barrier to getting things done in your life you are better off without it. I am sure it is more psychological than anything else so look for alternative activities or thought processes when you have the urge

Were you taking weed every day, or nearly every day?

You might try CBD, which is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid. You can't build a tolerance to it, and it does not impact progress toward coming off of THC (what some call a tolerance break or t-break). You were likely getting some CBD whenever you smoked weed, and it seems many find it to help with anxiousness during a t-break.

For CBD to do much good here I think you'd need to take 50 to 100 mg each day. 10 or 20 mg probably won't cut it. After a couple weeks you may not need it anymore. I can't guarantee it'll work, but it does seem to work for many.

Very loosely speaking I think it takes about a month for most people to come clear of the withdrawal symptoms of a heavy weed habit.

was every day, in the evenings on work days and all day on my days off.

i cant just have a little and be ok, if im a tiny bit stoned i need to be fully ripped or it feels lame. im not ordinarily an all or nothing kind of guy, but with weed im basically towellie from south park when he's trying to come up with good ideas.

thanks for the responses everyone.

You are not alone friend:hug: this is a normal and very difficult feeling to cope with.

I am on day 36 of sobriety from weed. I've been high everyday, all day, for 15 years. This is the first time in my adult life that I've spent almost all my time sober. Same deal, I can't have just a little.

The overstimulation, racing thoughts, mood swings, difficulty concentrating and cravings have made this, hands down the hardest thing I've ever done. Weed covered up many past addictions and a lifetime of pain that was never processed properly. This paired with the lacking dopamine sends the mind spiraling. My advice is too allow yourself to feel as much possible discomfort and pain as you can tolerate without losing your sanity, doing something dangerous, or caving. Feeling everything you can stand will allow your brain to begin getting back to a baseline over time. You will also learn a whole lot about yourself that you hadn't known was important. Stay occupied, use the anxiety and discomfort to keep moving until you are too tired to do any more. This is you're pain, you own it, and you will be able to overcome:rockon:

Personally I've allotted myself kava at the very end of the day, about 3 days a week, on an as needed basis. It works weakly on the cb1 receptor and generates mild relief, as well small amounts of nicotine on the weekends. These are substances in the quantity being used that are not clouding my mental space, and I personally have no issue controlling. I found it wasn't addiction keeping me high, it was unresolved issues.

I understand not wanting to substitute with more substances, as you mentioned. Sometimes something has to give a little bit to stay on the tracks. If you can manage without some mild chemical alieviation, even better. Weed withdrawal is whole lot more difficult for some than others depending on usage patterns.

It gets easier though, I've found things have gotten significantly better in all aspects of my life, after 30 days the discomfort and scattered thoughts begin to dwindle. Some of these benefits include: More motivation, higher energy levels, being more organized, less forgetful, deeper conversations and connection with my loved ones, to name a few. I had successfully lied to myself for 15 years under the guise of benefit to these subjects.

Please feel free to pm me anytime if you want to chat. Im here for you friend:hug::mushroom2:

Stay strong, you got this.

I don't have too much to add here, except for helping you sleep something like kava can really help. Also with anxious energy.

I'm skeptical of using kava in this situation. It's mildly psychoactive, mixes badly with alcohol, and may require a couple weeks of consistent use before it does any good for someone new to it. It operates according to a "reverse tolerance" dynamic.

It helped me. I used it when nothing else would help me sleep. I'm not saying to take it everyday all day. But like I said in my post, It may not be for him. If he is trying to avoid all substances, obviously he shouldn't.

i'm not avoiding shrooms, though! but there's a reason nobody wrote the lyric "eat shrooms every day"

edit: just cleared 2 weeks weed free. still having issues managing my stress but it's gradually becoming easier.
