The "Gulf of America" thing was dumb as rocks, but at least had some sort of vague racist jingoism behind it. "We're gonna name this after OUR country, not YOURS!"

This is beyond stupid, given that the province was named AFTER the lake. And because it's supposed to be some sort of "punishment" for Canada.

I understand that changing the official names of geographic features is one of the few absolutely unchecked powers the US president has, and obviously a guy like that is going abuse the fuck out of it. But honestly, this one feels like even more of a warning that the dementia is really settling in.

And these people have control over the nuclear football 😱

I agree that renaming it was unnecessarily childish, as many of his antics are.  However, the gulf is surrounded by North, Central, and South America, so it's not just named after the U.S. (although in his petulant mind it probably is).  I still call it the Gulf of Mexico and think he was dumb and childish for doing that, for the record.

The Gulf is only bounded by three countries: The US, Cuba, and Mexico. And Cuba is one of those "technically it sits at the entrance" type deals. Mexico still has more gulf coastline than the US. I guess in some contexts southern Mexico and Cuba could be considered part of Central America, but South America isn't really anywhere in that picture.

Doesn't really change your point, though, which I see.

Then again, the same argument could be made about "Lake America," but we all know exactly what he was trying to imply in both cases.

It's funny, I just listened to something about the tariff spat between the US and Canada, and I was actually kind of put off by the Canadian PM's language as well. Both sides of that fight seem perfectly fine with referring to "America," and then of course there was also the obligatory "Canada versus Washington." Maybe I'm just too much of a geography nerd, maybe it's living in the northeastern US and thinking more about the Canadian provinces that are right there as part of my overall region while thinking of the western US as basically another country. But honestly, that kind of rubs me the wrong way almost as much as Trump talking about making Canada "the 51st state." Because, you know, all insane hints at neo-lebensraum aside, that's just a fucking dumb way to talk about another country that also stretches from the Atlantic to the Pacific, and is 3 times as big as the US.

Anyway, yeah, I hear you, if only everyone else would adopt our obviously correct interpretation of the word "America" lol

Being from Michigan, the Great Lakes were a big deal being taught in school when I was growing up. The history and geography of all the lakes and we were taught to remember the word HOMES to remember the names of the lakes, Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie and Superior

So now they'll teach kids to remember HAMES? HAMES in the dictionary means to spoil through ineptitude or clumsiness. That's pretty wild. It's still always going to be lake Ontario to me

Just like the Gulf of America bullshit, I was able to laugh about this until I realized that google maps immediately went with it. What's especially Orwellian is tha typing "Lake Ontario" into the search bar just sends you to Lake Ontario, but lists it as Lake America. Then when you go back to pull up your search history, it just shows Lake America.

There are tons of people working for federal government agencies (and, apparently, private tech monopolies, I mean companies) who will now be forced to use this terminology. That goes beyond childish trolling, and right into performative loyalty oath territory. And the more I think about it, the creepier it is to me that this isn't just some mid-20th-century "how anti-communist are you?" type shit. This is straight-up "how willing are you to go along with ANYthing the cult leader declares?"

Fuck Trump's base. I hope all you people in Canada and elsewhere fully understand what a small proportion of our country's population actually supports him. Nobody asked him to do this. He came up with it overnight, probably on a whim. And unlike some bullshit like Freedom Fries, there are literally people who are forced to go along with this or lose their jobs. Just think for a second about how fucked that is.
