Maybe read my post again and try to understand the nuance of multiple different issues?  It's pretty clear you didn't understand what I was saying at all.

"Once we get into the business of using incarcerated people to perform tasks that paid employees used to do, we incentivize incarceration.  We already see this happening.  I can't see it as anything but slave labor."

Where is this already happening? It might be obvious in your head, but no I don't understand your reasoning. You didn't give a reason actually, you just stated your opinion as fact.

Forced prison labor isn't what psilynut was describing, though. He was talking about community service. Is there no difference to you? We don't know if it was a mandatory addition to the probation or an offer in lieu of incarceration.

I could see forced prison labor incentivizing incarceration. I don't think non-custodial alternatives like community service are the same as incarceration. But I guess when the community service is backed by incarceration, that could be coercive.

Anyway, now I'm more curious how you think people should be punished? If you'd like.

Are you that confused?  You quoted me talking about prison labor. You said it had no source.  I gave you a source or two.  Now you're moving the goal post to discuss something entirely different.

Forced community service is a form of incarceration.  What part of that don't you get?  If you don't do the work they tell you to do, they lock you up.

Punishment is a broad topic.  It's certainly not the subject of this thread.  If you want to get into different theories of punishment, I'm more than happy to do that, but not here.

I never asked for a source, I asked for your reasoning. You're being dramatic. Moving the goal post? The difference between community service and incarceration is the core of my original argument. What am I moving?

Community service does not meet the definition of incarceration. They do share features of temporal bondage, I get that, but it's not the same thing.

And we don't need to get into the entire topic of punishment, but clearly you have strong opinions about labor being taken as punishment. I'm sure you've heard the DSA platform point about abolishing prisons, what do you think about that? I haven't seen any official explanations anywhere about what that means exactly or how it might work. Not expecting you to know the answer to that but I'm interested in your thoughts on that or a concise model that you think would be ideal.

"The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) platform includes a long-term goal of abolishing prisons and policing as part of its vision to dismantle carceral state forces and address systemic inequalities."

I'm guessing you agree with this since you don't want to incentivize incarceration? Do you think there's any way America could actually get there? How might that work?

Because societies have to sequester a certain amount of people to promote stability.

Who actually pushes for that idea?

Not everyone with progressive policies agrees altogether with everything the DSA has stated.

Like Angie Nixon was asked about abolishing prisons, and she clearly said that wasnt her policy.

Quote:
DSA Political Platform

For all of the working class to achieve collective liberation we must constrain, diminish, and abolish the carceral forces of the state — from prisons and police themselves, to their manifestations in all forms throughout society. Each step forward in reducing the size, power, and authority of the repressive forces of the state expands the space for mass, organized, and collective action of the working class, and clears ground for us to build the institutions of a society to serve our communities with real justice and equality.

We are committed to the horizon of abolition and the path leading us there. Our demands:

Defund the police by rejecting any expansion to police budgets or scope of enforcement while cutting budgets annually towards zeroEnd the criminalization of working-class survivalFreedom for all incarcerated peopleDemilitarize the police and end colonial policing of our cities and neighborhoodsFreedom of working-class self-organization and democratic political actionInvest in community self-governance and care, not cops

Exactly no political firgure would say they would get rid of prisons . Dsa is no different.  Her stance that schools system failings led to a pipeline to prisons stance in correct just not in the way she thinks it is.

Darializa Avila Chevalier is saying it. Democratic Socialists of America co chair Megan Romer is saying it. Technically Zohran Mamdani said it before running for office and hinted it on his campaign. Icon is just to left wing to do his research and list names.

Avila made a post in 2021 that said a world without prisons is possible.

She never ran on it that I could find.

Zohran was very clear about closing Rikers Island, not abolishing prisons.

Did you look any of these up?

As for Megan Romer, she said "yes its a long term plan" to being asked if she wanted to abolish prisons on a fox news interview in July.

Shes the Co-chair for DSA, and from that short clip, she doesn't come off as a good communicator.

That said, who's running with that as a policy? It doesnt appear like anyone mentioned is.
