If it’s bad to eat fruits off a contaminated substrate…
    #29653687 -

…. And I’m not saying it isn’t, to be clear.

But then why do so many people suggest to bury the contaminated sub outside and see if it fruits? Those mushies were still grown on a contaminated substrate right?
How is that different?

its not bad unless the fruits themselves are bacterial.

just know you'll probably be eating more mold spores than ususal but I have eaten plenty of fruits of a trich'd out sub or other molds.. unless it was really gone and just gross. If theres some trich happening ina  corner just pluck the healthy fresh ones. If its still on the sub and its mushy, avoid.

For me i can say,
my eye and nose decide if i wanna eat something.
In case of doubt you can always boil them for tea.

Well, my take on it is that there's nothing inherently wrong with eating fruit from a contaminaed substrate, especially because most substrates are probably contaminated with something. In my experience, the bacteria that fuck up our grows are not the same as the ones that fuck up our guts. And remember that there are always bacteria we don't know anything about in the mix, many of which are neutral for our purposes, some of which may even be beneficial. All of this really isn't any different from aby other foods we eat.

Dehydration and/or boiling to make tea would also add layers of protection against anything that could actively fuck us up.

Yeah, I probably wouldn't eat a spoonful of trich spores, but we're basically consuming them all the time anyway without realizing it.

There are three issues that have led to my decision to just dump everything at the first sign of green, and not even bother processing mature fruits:

1. Contamination is an issue for us because it attacks and destroys what we're trying to grow. That process necessarily involves death and decay. While contamination in and of itself might not do anything to us, eating a bunch of half-rotten fruits certainly could. I've just found the chore of inspecting fruits from contaminated substrate for signs of rot or senescence to be a maddening waste of time. Unlike fruits on healthier substrates, they can do all that in strange and unpredictable ways. I mean, I'm confident in my ability to inspect them and identify any issues, I just don't feel like it anymore.

2. Doing any work with substrates that have visible trich or other mold spores present is gonna stir that shit up and increase the baseline spore load in your grow space.

3. Putting fruits from that environment in a dehydrator will also blow those spores all over the damn place.

I recognize that the last two points may verge on paranoia, but since they dovetail with my goal of eliminating time-consuming and pointless tasks, I'm sticking to them.

As for outside, well, yeah, it's a whole different world and some substrates may recover out there. Trich in particular is extremely susceptible to extreme heat solar radiation. It's an organism that normally thrives below the soil surface, or at tleast below the surface of leaf litter and whatnot in shadier areas. The artificial indoor environment is Disneyland for a lot of common contaminants. The great outdoors are often far less hospitable to them, especially because there's more competition out there. If you got fruits poking up through the soil and growing ginormous in the sunshine, then you're no longer harvesting them from a fetid kiddie pool. You're pulling them out of the open sea, so to speak. I've never even seen a truly rotten fruit outdoors.

I believe this is highly dependent on the type of contamination. My rule of thumb is that if it’s black, pink, orange, red etc it’s a no go. Certain molds produce myco toxins. Trichoderma is safe.

Sure, i wouldn´t ever consider to harvest with these kinds of contam.
Don´t forget brown mold

Yeah, that makes sense, but I do have to say: I don't think I've ever seen those types of mold on substrates that had produced fruit. They were always fucked beyond recognition before fruiting could occur.
