SSS - stuck song syndrome - likeness to intrusive thoughts * 1
    #29643479 -

In the last couple of years, I have been using spotify to accompany my morning exercises: I play a list of songs that I like as I go through the tai chi moves and floor exercises, then I do some zazen.

some of the tunes really are catchy and phrases from them keep on recurring in my head after i stop spotify.

sometimes they go with the counting in my exercise reps, or replace the numbers or make the numbers into a song.

the ear-worm may continue through the sitting meditation on and off, and may replace my mental words accompanying the breath: "beginning, middle, end"

I first notes a strong stuck song syndrome event on my first acid trip  as the "whiter shade of pale" kept on playing in my head throughout the night. Actually it was lovely.

Sometimes I get an annoying sticky verbal thought and it just repeats intermittently with no relevance to the situation except as a kind of echo of itself a few moments before.

I see it as the reactivation of patterns that have neurons that were recently active such as in short term memory reactivation.

these links have descriptions of the phenomenon and some methods to curb it when it is unpleasant
https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4723199/
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earworm

when I need to cut through a repeating cycle, I bear down and relax into the moment and follow my breath in my awareness slowly for at least 15 minutes.

how do others here deal with this wide-spread phenomenon?

I've struggled with not counting. At some point I decided I didn't like it. I've played with mixing the numbers up until I loose place.

I haven't found a permanent solution. I haven't found a way to avoid "one" because the invocation of it's absence is "one".

"This is not important" has been helpful, which I suppose is a way of relaxing into the moment.

I do quite a bit of counting to 4,
and I like to count to 4, 4 times (making 16)
and I do reps in exercise by counting (often 16 8 times = 128 reps)

sometimes while doing zazen I am mixed up and do counting and then wake up and resume "beginning middle end"

often in a hurry to get my pants down at the toilet I count to 4 a few times. it's a weird habit.

I find a place of stillness at the bottom of the breath, then focus on that stillness through the rest of the breath, sinking deeper and deeper into it.

One of the best things ever is just noticing that what I perceive as me doesn't move when the body moves. That seems to really do a great job of releasing stuff for me.

I used to have proper head OCD with something like a stuck word syndrome, where whatever i read or saw in bill boards, papers, TV etc I kind of feared id forget or something?

Or it just felt 'better' to hear it in my head three times, but then better again to hear it 9 times, then 27, then 81 etc.

Everything had to be repeated in threes, but doing that repetition didnt ultimately feel good, it was very compulsive. I was 10-12 at the time.

The only way it seemed to end was after a few years i repeated the lines in my head 4 times, multiple of 4, and it felt 'gross' at first. But that was good, I didn't want to feel almost rewarded or safer for doing things in threes.

It used to get well into the hundreds or reiterations but id eventually loses count or get overwhelmed.

I think thats more extreme than an ear worm, but at least going from the 3 tone i seemed to like, to the 4 tone that didn't feel right helped me out, whether that's translatable or not idk.

ear worms they are called? sometimes i have them ringing through my head mid sleep, when i am not fully awake but not dreaming. just a snippet of a song

when i come across a song that gives me goosebumps or it fits a nice moment i often play it on repeat for a week or two and it becomes my soundtrack. much more likely to become an ear worm

and to deal with it? sometimes i sing along

cool, sometimes it is  a joy to sing along with a familiar rhythm that has emerged from 'nearly' nothing and arrives at the fore of awareness in the fleshed out form of a familiar song, or phrase, or number series.

it is, in a way, like coming home.

that is self soothing, and with so many things being confusing in life, a bit of self soothing goes a long way towards calmness.

same way i battle tinnitus. thinking about it makes it worse, and consciously trying not to think about it makes it even worse than purposely thinking about it. it becomes a battle between my higher and lower thinking, where my higher thinking has to sort of be the mature one and jingle some keys in front of my lower thinking. i find the only way to pull this off is to sort of "give up" and do something else that requires some follow-through, such as picking out clothes from the laundry bin that need to be hung up to dry and starting the washer. if i'm lucky, by the time i've gone from one room to the other and heard the washer door click shut and the control panel beep, i'm no longer replaying the theme song from thomas the tank engine or hearing an all-encompassing "EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE"

My partner developed intrusive thoughts of a disturbing nature after the birth of our son

I spent the summer listening to some podcasts from this doc in the states named Dr. Steven Phillipson

I caught onto this particular guy because he was consistent in how he would describe OCD and its treatment

The main takeaways, yes AI summary:

Quote:
the amygdala fires a false alarm, and the person's job — through ERP — is to respond in a way that communicates to the brain that this particular signal doesn't deserve attention or emotional investment. Not by arguing with the thought, not by suppressing it, but by voluntarily engaging with the feared content and then not performing the compulsion, so the brain gradually recalibrates and stops flagging it as a threat.

He would often say.. the goal is to convey irrelevance. Because the content of the thoughts themselves is non-sense

It was a frustrating time for us because I wanted so badly for her to let the thoughts be. Let the thoughts be whatever they are, and then you are not attaching extra meaning which makes them more sticky. She basically would think that because she was having these thoughts, she was unfit to mother. What kind of a mother could have such thoughts? But this only served to attach additional importance

If any of this is helpful or makes sense to anyone dealing with this. I can empathize very much with the suffering involved with OCD

it's not just the thought
usually there is a body feeling that goes along with it
they are connected together,
there is a phrasing to it as well, like breathing, or musical progression.
the pattern of words, movement, or music confers a kind of soothing familiarity.

even if it is nasty, it is my nasty thing,
sort of like navigation into the maw of this raw blanket wrapping everything or intruding on everything
--- a challenge and a capitulation to the sequence that starts again and again.

weird but very natural.

and belief

The thought, "Someone is going to break into my house and kill me." Holds little emotion until I think its true.

thats postpartum depression, it should be viewed in that framework rather than being just ocd. childbirth is an absolute mindfuck and its very normal and common for new mothers to experience a lot of dark intrusive thoughts

the hormonal side of post partum is impossible to argue with, and I think it takes a lot of work to endure it.
it is a bit like minidosing continuously for a few months.

at the assisted living place nancy said the problem was everyone had a loop spinning around in their head, so they were all stuck. she went around everyday trying to break people out of their loops.

when she got dementia her own loop took over. she got depressed and withdrew into her room, and showed pictures of her husband, said what a great man he was, how much she loved him, showed pictures of the dream house they built together, how he died just after they moved in.

then the dementia ate away her memory. she forgot where she was, who the staff was, that she lost the house, that her husband died.  She asked for him a hundred times a day. Each time she had the same expression on her face, held her hand in the same way, had the same voice tone.

people in dementia section were often stuck in loops. One woman always had to find her kids, one guy always thought he was in the army. One woman was always stealing other people's things.  One woman always thought people were breaking into her room at night. One woman was always asking for candy.

I think it is related, however, in the case of dementia, only the behavior loop is there, but in SSS, and intrusive thoughts, the whole person is there enduring the ongoing resumption of the familiar pattern sequences.

the case of dementia is as if the loop had consumed the person, through gradually being the most repeated of all habit sequences.

in that sense, we may become what we do/did most frequently while our health and vigor declines.

the most common mental content becomes our shrine/cathedral/prison/shell/residue

i noticing during meditation retreats thought can glitch out, say nonsensical things, take on weird character voices, speak in imaginary languages but still have meaning

the meaning of each moment is that unique momentary pattern.
during meditation, we get into cognitive frame stacks - similar to psychedelic states

i notice in both the thought process becomes disidentified and part of the background, making everything feel still and quiet, leaving a sense of calm and clarity
