beauty Galt!...if i can piggy back one also, I dont believe these seeds were labeled as any type of hybrid, maybe Icaros dna(OP), the popsicle stick label is long lost

What do you look for when trying to decipher which variety you have? With my ignorance they all look basically the same aside from a bit of color difference.

@Bigworm, im not sure if that was asked directly to me, I've been keeping up with this one but just let the original marker fadeaway.  I was much more anal about keeping things in order when started.

icaros was the collecter/vendor of the wild collected Peruvianus seeds.  I dont have the best knowledge on this either but someone here would....i think there could be slight variations between ribs and spines with these but are mainly noted for the blueness?... sorry if that doesnt help much, hoping to see more pics though....was hoping Hobbitt started a wave!!!

Just a general question to everyone.

If you've lost a label then it's just an unnamed Trichocereus. Unless you are totally sure about it of course.

Trying to assign cultivar names just from looks is not the standard one aspires to if they want to be a good plantsman/woman/person. It's how things get muddled and it's how the standards drop and you end up with a great big mess.

I do agree that the suspected ICAROS DNA cross does indeed resemble one.

ICAROS DNA plants are not clones or cultivars. They're diverse seed grown plants that grow large, thick Blue columns. They are quite beautiful cactus and distinctive.

The seeds were collected in the Matucana Valley of Peru by a person called Julio. He has a seed company called Ikaros DNA.

I see people are using the, IKAROS spelling these days and not the, ICAROS. Which was how everyone spelled it in the past and when they were initially released. That's interesting....

Also. People asking questions in this thread seem not to be getting answers. Maybe make your own posts if you have questions. Things get buried in this thread pretty quickly. I can see them better too and will likely respond.

Cool cactus all.

I have an opportunity to graft peyotl onto these san pedro.  Because one is flowering, I'm going to leave that one alone for the time being, i think.  There are plenty of peyotl pups, though.

That leaves the pot on the right, which has 7 columns.

Should i graft 7 peyotl onto this plant?  should they all be at the same height?  (how far up from the trunk?) Or should i leave room for growth/variance?  It would nice to keep the height of this plant down by grafting them all and not allowing upward columnar growth, i'm thinking.

should i graft some onto the flowering cactus too?  maybe just on the non-flowering branches?  or should I wait until it's done.

I will be rooting most of the cuttings I cut, but for the ones that might be consumed, do i treat it differently than the ones callusing over to be rooted?  I read that alkaloid content goes up with drying, so would it be worth it to callus over then dry completely sliced in a dehydrator?  or just let it age a little bit before making a brew?  I'm considering making a tincture, but i've never prepared cactus before, or even had a significant dose.  would tea be the best way to experience it?

edit:
also, i've wanted to get that one on the right into a bigger pot for a while...  i think it's not doing as well as the other one because it's in a smaller pot... would it be good to up-pot it at the same time?  or would that be too stressful for it?

the current plan is to graft 7 peyotl onto this one.  I heard some like to leave 12" of the base rather than cutting near the bottom.  but i'd like to cut them low, especially the old weak growth, but doing it at varying heights so they dont get so crowded together.

ive never grafted onto all the columns of the same plant before, but i like your idea of cutting at different heights.  I think most might stay away from cutting in older growth because the stem becomes woodier and less ideal for fusing with your scions.

I dont know how well a plant might recover from so much action at once, let alone how each yote will take.  maybe try 1 or 2 individually first to watch recovery before fully committing.

none of my pachanoi/noids have flowered except a grandiflorous.  I'd personally wait on cutting them but it would be strictly to see the flowers...i dont know if anything is happening during a flowering phase that would make grafting less ideal.  post your cuts once you've done them though, best of luck!

Grafting only really works when using the fresher, non woody parts of the cactus. The top 1-2 inches is where you attach the scions to and will dictate how you go about things.

You can always graft onto the Trichocereus, wait to see good growth and then cut and reroot the rootstock. This will allow ytou to have that 12 inch rootstock you see often.

You have PC pachanoi there. They are notoriously weak in mescaline. The stressing to get more alkaloid thing is over rated too and wont do much in your instance. Just get more material would be the better option.

If you've got no experience grafting then do a graft at a time. Get some experience and you'll figure it out. It's not too difficult but you need to get your technique down.

Have fun!

wow i didn't know that about grafting it to the new growth, that makes sense.

Since the plant is too tall already, i'll have to re-think the plan.  I might just harvest a bunch and graft later.

i'm not sure what youre referring to about stressing the plants, i understand I have the PC which is weak, but the peyotl grafted to it would be stronger, no?

I think i'll try one or two grafts down low if i can.  thanks.

and no, I won't cut the flowering one.

Stressing is the term that's used to allow a cutting to dry out, usually for a long time, to increase it's mescaline content. It's basically stressing the cactus out to make it increase its alkaloids. It's minimal and you're really better off just getting some extra inches of cactus from somewhere else really.

I would probably start grafting onto the lower pups too.

An example of how to graft Lophophora on to Trichocereus that I made years ago. Might be of help.

All of mine still have labels so I'm good there. I grew them all from seed but I have 1 that has a completely different look to it. I have SS02 x lumberjack and SS02 x malo but one of them looks completely different. It came from the SS02 x lumberjack seeds.

That one is a bit out of the ordinary and makes me wonder if it was a blow in from another batch of seeds. It's not expressing any of that characteristics of either of the cactus you listed.

Growing from seed you do get a variable of traits but that looks like to be a different species. It is young though and doesn't seem to be expressing it's true feature yet. It's still a baby.

It looks like it has some T. Spachianus in it to me, but yeah, they can look completely different that young vs. older.

My local home depot had a bunch of 5 gallon potted San Pedro and some had some interesting rib structures. Little pricey at $50 and pot though.

Is this something genetic or just a mutation?

They're either reverts from a crested variety and have some monstrose genetics in them. This will cause them to have some monstrose growth, like rib shifting and other weirdness. Like you see on the one to the left.

Or that one dropped a rib and then decided to grow it again.

Seed grown Trichocereus and some rooted cuttings can add or remove ribs as they stabilise and grow.

Yeah, those are Altman's TPM. They grow normal for a bit then freak out and do shifty melty stuff for a bit, then go back to normal for awhile, and repeat. They will crest sometimes too, my first crest came from that clone after a snail chewed a tip. 50 for those 5g ones isn't bad imo, especially the triple branch ones.

Good to know. I'll have to go back and see if they have any wonkier ones.

I lucked out at a cactus nursery I frequent. I bought her last TBM-B and she asked for my number to let me know next time she gets more, since im the only one who buys them apparently. She made me a good deal and I got another nice batch of them, along with a couple free handmade ceramic pots.

Hoping to grow a few of these out to a good size stand. I have a few spots in my yard picked out to get some into the ground.
