First Foraging Attempt Results (requesting ID help)
    #29638685 -

We were too exhausted after to post this yesterday, but we’ve got the results for our first foraging attempt.

Will be adding to this over the course of the day with photos and details to help ID all of this, just need to wake up. Thankfully yesterday me had the foresight to write all her observations down before passing out. Just need to get some cotton balls since the little ones seemed to have dried out and haven’t given any spore prints. We got told we could get spore prints without removing the cap but that doesn’t seem to have panned out.

Although we got plenty of photos out in the wild, we failed to remember to take any photos while we were setting this all down. These are all from the morning after. We might not be firing on all cylinders lmao

All mushrooms were picked from wooded areas of Victoria, Australia as of yesterday. Heavy leaf coverage and tree debris. No idea what the local plants were outside eucalyptus tho.

The one in the far corner is the one print I’ve managed to find so far. Will be checking on the others, just need to wake up. I’m worried about how long these will be good for.

I’m pretty sure some of these might be overripe or rotting. But I’m too attached to this being the first mushroom hunt I’ve done myself to throw them out without being told, so feel free to tell me off if something is unsalvageable.

Since the trip was poorly planned we used plastic instead of paper bags, but we separated them out enough that I figure they could be used as a backup spore source.

Anyways, would appreciate any help figuring out what we’ve picked. Might also be posting more than these 8 later if my hunting partners decide to share their photos for further identification

Batch 1, 3 samples.

Noticable gills (light tan)
Thin sturdy stem
No/lightly wet earth smell (hard to distinguish from dirt)
Darkens/reddens when given a light squeeze, but subtle enough that my poor memory makes me feel gaslit.

Location details in first post. Vi, Australia. Wooded area, heavy tree debris. Eucalyptus trees nearby.  Found in soil(?)

Picked August 2nd evening, photo taken August 3rd evening. No luck on spore prints, trying with cotton balls. Would appreciate help

Notes: I have no idea if I’m overthinking or underthinking cross contamination, but I feel I’m doing a shit job. We should have taken these sooner

Addendum: first spore sample got. Mushroom with broken cap. White(?) spores. Other two have yet to produce anything.

Batch 2
1 sample

Much the same as batch 1, but smaller. Previously brown cap, but we applied too much water to the thing while attempting to remosturize it for spore samples. Will probably need to retake the cap photos. Mangled the gills while trying to cut off the stem. Accidentally dropped it on the floor. Panicked and touched with our bare fingers. Not our finest work.

Gills were noticable and tan. Cap was I believe similar to other samples. Previous night, did seem to darken when squeezed similar to other batches but as before hard to tell if was just imagined.

Batch 3
4 samples

Large one has two attached, stem found hollow inside once cut off

This one seems to have taken some damage and may have gotten some water on the stem (addendum, cap broke between shots, fell on floor). Wet part of stem seems to be either hollow or incredibly soft, caves easily.

Notably hollow stem, small hole allows visibility inside.

Split stem, worst decomposition.

Moderately thick stems. Notable gills. Previously noted no smell or a we earth smell indistinguishable from wet earth. Unsure, but smell seems stronger, but does not seem different between samples. Probably rotting. No notable bruising from notes taken last night. Some Seem to be in the process of decomposition, or at least heavily damaged, not sure.  Most likely worthless. Might take spore samples anyway just for hell of it. Have not applied water yet.

Batch 4, 1 sample

Similar to batches 1 and 2. From notes light brown cap and noticable gills, subtle reddening or maybe purpling when squeezed. Thin stem, white/grey to tan. Can see where the first drop of water was applied. Least botched of the samples I feel.

Batch 5
1 samples

Notably longer stem than batch 1 but about the same again. Cap was light brown to reddish brown and damaged. Wrinkled stem. Smell seemed stronger than others last night. Can’t tell if worse. Noted again a perceived color change.

Over moisturized and lightly crushed also, may need to retake photo once dry

Batch 7
1 samples

Flat, lightly wavey dull, yellow cap. Small, firm, slightly slimy. Darker at edges. Noted as having no smell, but that might have changed. cannot identify visible bruising (might be subtle). Very small, stem, close to ground; flush with the mud. Has dried out. Not sure if any gills or if they shriveled or were damaged when removing mud.  No idea how I’m going to get a print.

Batch 6
1 samples

Our first successful spore print. Mushroom damaged, still damp. Producing a fuck ton of spores; just leaving it in the paper bag overnight has created a whole nother sport print.

brown cap tan stem, decently wide.
Noticeable light tan gills.
Darkens on squeeze (purpling bruising?)
Smells like wet earth and fish oil.

Did you get photos of them in habitat?

Sadly no. Not for most of them at least. I got plenty for our first location, but the second location where most of these were pulled from I was too busy helping with carrying everything for my foraging partners and handing out bags to think of getting a lot of photos.

I might have some photos of batch 7 in habitat on my good camera, and I’ve probably got photos of the now discarded batch 8 (deep red, flatish cap, lightly slimey, completely melted over the course of a day. All that’s left now is the bag which I’ve dubbed the mystery sample bag in case there’s some leftover spores in just to fuck with it). There might be others? Not sure. Tho, even if there were, for the similar looking ones I likely couldn’t tell you what belongs to which batch, or if they were picked or just photographed. I’ve photos of the area and other mushrooms in the immediate location, if that helps.

Those are all gonna be raw photo files tho and I need to figure out how to get them off my camera still

Alright we might not have botched this after all. We have spore prints from all of batch 1, and prints of dubious existence from 3 of 4 of batch 2. I’ve left the most intact batch 2 sample overnight in the hopes of getting a better sample, either it will rot away into nothing or I’ll get an actual solid sample.

I have moved the batch 1 samples into a wax paper bag in the fridge, and I’m gonna get some silica gel packets to put in with them and the spore samples. Every sample has been labeled and stored in a separate little plastic bag. Still need to get the exact location of site 2. I don’t have a dehydrator or an heat lamp and idk how much longer they’ll last, but if they’re psychoactive I want to try and save them.

I really, really should ask how long fresh cubes or subs will stay good for.

Bags the mushrooms were moved in have also been moved to storage. Possible psychedelic samples and obviously not are being stored separately. We did fuck up and mix up the bags for 4, 5, and 6 tho so I’ve labeled each accordingly based on what could be in there.

Card reader is usually the best way, but if you don't have one, a usb-c cable to a computer usually works as long as you don't mind waiting.    It's a good idea to turn on raw+jpg because sometimes the jpg is fine and you don't benefit from raw - especially in mushroom photography where you can control the lighting and they aren't blowing in the wind.  Just set your color balance and exposure correct and you usually won't need to process the raws.

As long as you are going to get good photos and make spore prints, might as well send them in to mycoblitz.org for DNA barcoding.  They'll sequence anything you find through August 7 for free.  Don't mail dirt / stem bases, as that isn't allowed through customs, but dried mushrooms are.

Spore prints are best on microscope slides.

I can do that. I uh. Don’t have a way to dry them tho. You think my convection oven microwave hybrid thing would do? Or do I just need to order a dehydrator and hope it gets here before what I’ve got left spoils?

Leave them on your dashboard and park in the sun.    The oven might get them too hot - if they get over 100 degrees C the DNA will break down.

Windowsill should work, or the part of a refrigerator where it blows out the warm air.

Refrigerator seems to have worked! The caps of batch 1 are practically skeletal now. Have not checked the others yet tho.

Ok great!    It should be cracker dry, not flexible.    You can put in a silica gel pack to keep it dry, as humidity from the air will slowly go through a ziplock bag.
