I've had some early success with pan cyans. I used the substrate from the Monotub 3.0 tek. It's a manure/coir recipe, and seemed to do ok. (although I am most certainly not an expert--I was happy it worked at all).
I've been very interested in Asura's method (based on the Blue Helix) method of innoculating sterilized bulk with LC. The substrates were something like 2 parts HP, 1 part chopped straw, some verm, a little gypsum. And a "supplemental grain".
I have some chopped straw, but it seems to me using a little coir helps the mycellium run more easily as it's not trying to jump between lengths of straw.
So that's my current plan--a substrate made of HP, straw, coir, verm, and gypsum supplemented with some hydrated grain.
My basic plan is to hydrate the manure with a significant xs of water generating more of a manure slurry/tea, then using that to hydrate the coir. that should really help evenly distribute the manure through the rest of the substrate.
The idea was to hydrae the components separately, so that each could have the field capacity dialed in. I can tweak it a little bit with water or verm at the end.
One question I had was, what would be a good starting point for the ratio of supplemental grain? Spawning to bulk, it looks like a lot of people go 1:2 or so, but the high ratio seems to be an issue of colonization speed. Since I would be going to sterilized bulk, I'm curious if I had to go that high. If I prepared, say, 6 quarts of the above bulk substrate, would 1 quart of grain work? (I've not decided yet--I have oats, popcorn, wbs, and brown rice. I'm thinking about going with brown rice--at least on BR agar, the pans fly through it).
Any thoughts on the matter? I did a lot of reading, and because it's hard to know what "1 quart of straw" is (because of packing, the length it's cut...), that the substates can end up all over the place. But also, cultivators claim it isn't critically important. If it is more manure or straw heavy, the pans don't seem to care too much.
I'm just wondering if there are any critical parameters here. Cubes can be fruited from straight grain, or diluted quite a bit into bulk substrate. Do pans have some parameters where they will or won't fruit? Too much grain or not enough?
I have everything I need. Bags, syringes. I tested my LCs on agar and pint grain jars, and no signs of anything nasty after 5 days. I'm certain it's clean.
I think the trick here, using a variety of components, would be ensuring field capacity was correct. The straw would help structure and hold some water. The coir and verm would hold a ton of water as well as nutrients from the manure, and the grain would be the ultimate nutrition source for the mycellium. Give it all a generous PC cycle, and it should be good to go.
I've been intimidated to work with pans, as my earlier understanding was that they were extremely tempermental with respect to temperature, humidity, and FAE. But some of the more modern methods seem to imply they are not THAT tricky. In fact, the Monotub tek suggested actually misting the surface, pins and fruits and all. Several other vids and readings also didn't do anything fancy with respect to foggers, fans, etc. A couple used a simple air line from an aquarium pump through the side of the tub, and just had it kick on a few minutes every hour.
