That’s what I thought too, then I registered to vote in CA from the comfort of my midwest living room, no ID or address or ssn required. There’s a checkbox to opt out of that and you can type in any name and cross street as your place of residence. I picked a basketball court in LA. They assign undocumented voters a secret PIN that you use to verify your registration at a voting location.



At least need a bank statement or paystub i guess, apparently anyone’s pay stub with the same name since they’re not requiring photos. But to vote in state or local elections you don’t need a single thing.

In California if you register to vote without ID it’s up to election officials to verify your identity after the fact.  If you register without ID they are supposed to verify your identity with ID at the polling place.  If you don’t present ID there you get a provisional ballot until election workers verify your identity and eligibility.

I’m all for voter rights but they need to tighten up their process as it puts too much responsibility on election workers.  California has a program to provide free ID cards to low income and unhoused residents so there’s really no excuse not to get an ID other than laziness.

At least that’s my understanding.  If I’m wrong on that by all means let me know.

I’m not going to try it because it’s voter fraud.  But I’m legitimately interested to see what happens with your registration with a basketball court as your address.  I’m guessing nothing will happen if you don’t show up to cast a ballot but it would be interesting to see if your voter registration is removed from the system before election day.  I’m wondering if the state actually attempts to verify voter registration before a ballot is cast or after.

The law does seem to give provision for unhoused persons to register to vote by giving their last permanent address or the address where they intend to rest.  I suppose that would make a basketball court a legitimate address.
