Political views of friends and family
    #1577418 - 05/26/03 01:26 AM (14 years, 4 months ago)

I was just wondering if the people on this board generally tend to hang out with friends who have similar or opposing political views. How about your family? Were you raised with the political views you now have?

As you know, I am very liberal for the most part. I have some liberal friends who I don't see very much, but I find that the friends I hang out with most often are either apolitical or conservative. One of them is actually a big fan of Rush Limbaugh. My family, on the other hand, is very liberal. How about you guys?

My Friends views: Acid is bad, we should take over all of the middle east.

My Parent's views: Drugs are bad, Bush is always right, John Ashcroft is a decent man.

Damn, that sux.

The reason I like coming to this board is because it's the best place for me to debate politics. I don't like discussing politics with my conservative friends because I don't like to argue with them, and when I discuss politics with my parents, we're generally in agreement, so there's not much to debate. With this board, I can debate people with opposing viewpoints anonymously.

my friends views: range from leftist activist to republican.

one of my roomates is singaporean (which is a totalitarian nation). He is a total republican right-winger, but we get along great and always have awesome debates.

i dont think I could classify myself, Im interested in truth, freedom and intelligence. but im sure people lable me left-wing.

although i have a severe distaste for many other propaganda-spewing left wingers.

To varying degrees, pretty much all of my friends and family agree that the current administration is bad news. Few of them share my passion for this fact. I got in trouble for telling my four-year-old nephew that "President Bush is a bad, bad man." And it's true, I shouldn't have said that. It was in a moment of weakness.

I actually don't know anyone personally who supports Bush (that I'm aware of). Even my religious friends/family are wary of his "Christian" slant. My girlfriend's step-mom loves Bush and loved Reagan, and my sister-in-law says her parents do to, but that's as close as it's come.

This thread is interesting, thanks.

Friends: from Left tree huggers that don't, and I quote "want to be buried in the cemetary, a republican might end up in the plot next to mine" all the way over to war supporting, Bush-supporting, American car sticker bearing righties. But most of my closests friends are left-center.

Family: Very left, at least my immediate family anyways. My mother is very blindly liberal, you know, one of those that hates Bush regardless and thinks Clinton was a great president. My father is a little more pragmatic, I mean he ususally votes down party lines, but he does have some moderate/conservative views, but not many.

I have many friends that have ties to Unions (Detroit Area) so they tend to lean to the left. They aren't however the libbies that present themselves as little wimps like the tree hugger crowd.

My family is mixed with Old denocrates and a majority is Conservative. The conservatives are a little to far to the religious right for my liking.

Hmmm, I have friends farther to the left than me, the types that believe in stupid conspiracy theories like "gov't controls the weather" and that drug companies get planes to spray mold spores and shit in the air so they can sell more allergy drugs (and yes I kept the link for laughs in anyone wants it). MOst friends are to the left, but I have a few co-workers who are really conservative in their views and only one of them can back his views up. Parents are both republican, and Dad thinks George is great and sees nothing wrong with republicans controlling the world.

My view....conspiracy....I know the thruth about some, I'seen first hand some distortion....a good deal of it, enough truth to make it believable

Mom...hell with those SOBs...I can run my life better than them...listen to that bullsh#t on the news....her view on drugs...what the hell do I care if it's legal, I dont use them and could care less...if it begins to step into my life I'll show it the way out....at gunpoint.

My pop....where my shot gun...the sobs have tried for 40 years to deny me pension, benefits and medical care...I shoot the bastards if they come around here...his view on drugs....no...no drugs in this country, god will....blah.....

grandparent...well my grandmother introduced me to a mushroom, showed me the ones to pick....she carries a 357 every where and keeps another in her car, experienced the 'blessings' of uncle sam and still makes a little liquor in defiance

my friends...drugs are cool man... on politics, drugs are cool man....what do ya mean reagan isnt the president.....

My family is as conservative as you can be. i was born a good little republican. I was the perfect little republican too. I couldnt be too white or too greedy or too self righteous enough. I hit the age of 18 and started my way into the world of psychadelics and everything changed, a total 180. I am now about as liberal as you can get. I cant believe how fucked i was. Whenever i see, hear, debate conservatives i know exactly where they are coming from and they scare the shit out of me. Just wish they could see out of their box, tunnel, black white, right wrong, me against you perception. All my friends are republicans but that can be expected as i come from the bible belt and if i want friends i need to accept that kansas is a conservative haven. I actually have a couple of hippy friends that i recently met at college that think pretty much along the same lines as me which is finally a relief.

Unfortunately, the revolution will never come, thanks to the mind-numbing narcotic power of television.

I hang out with conservatives, liberals, libertarians, anarchists, and people who couldn't name the president for the life of them.

All my friends are very liberal, and pretty much hate Bush's guts. I have a lot of feminist, bisexual and gay friends who reallllllly hate Bush, and are even more liberal for the most part. My girlfriend is even more of an environmental activist than I am.

My parents are 65 year old hippies who somehow think Bush isin't that bad. Makes me go:
