MushLuvR's Martha Madness Marathon * 6

Alright everyone, I've been wanting to make a home here and an indoor GH, aka the Martha tent is my preferred way to grow, currently doing some test pans dialing in my environment, it's pretty much locked in already (fine tuning at this point), just want the surface a tad more moist, they were pretty dry (casing) at 94% humidity and a 10-point differential, so I went to 8, and it's better, but not quite where I prefer them so I went 7.5.  Yes, you can have almost 95% H and dry casings, and this is from a tiny 80mm fan that is attached to a tote and a 3-disc HoH fogger 24/7. 

Yes, you may be thinking to yourself, how is this possible, Air 24/7 and the controller kicks off the humidity and the fan keeps spinning.  The 80mm fan has a speed controller, and it's on the lowest setting (trickles the fog in, but still comes up fast). Early on, before anything was in the chamber, I had the fan on high, it was way too much, brought the humidity in fast, but once the fogger is off, it's a whirlwind in there and I have done this to pan trays in the past, it's too much for pinning... sparse fruiting... or NONE. 

The reason I really have the Martha is edible woodie blocks, that's my passion, I did over 250 blocks from 2019 or 20, to late 2023, no joke I went crazy with it.  All done in a 16qt Presto, 4 blocks, just under 5lbs each without spawn.  I have grown all kinds of mushrooms, Beech, a ton of shiitakes, and LM, Chestnuts, many varieties of oysters, ALL in the same environment to name a few (polypore fan originally, first edible/med block was Turkey Tail).  I don't have a FH, all open air... NO I'm kidding, had you going there for a second, but uh, blocks and all work done in a 90+ quart SAB.

Hindsight 20/20, I would have went 100 qt or so, but it works, and I get the job done all the same.  I prefer Unicorn bags and zips, but I've used, twist ties, duct tape, my wife's hair ties, you name it to close the bag.  Zip ties are the fastest, maybe one day I'll get a sealer, but not necessary to be successful. 

This is the intro, so here we... GROW!

Currently, I have two jars of Pink Oysters ready to rock and jiggle in the presto spawned to HWFP and bran, and... a freebie Branched Oyster that can take all sorts of temps, Pinks don't like cold.  I also have two Bolles pink Lions Mane jars doing well, they are slower but looking great.  I haven't grown this pink LM out yet, but I've grown Coralloides, LM, Bears Head, and even Conifer Coral that grows on cheaper pine pellets.  Yup, big fan of LM varieties, Bears Head brings out some wild faces in the fruits, I always geta kick out of how they are going to turn out. 

 

Pink Oysters are hands down one of my favorites to grow and eat.  The taste is wonderful, these and Kings, but it's too warm for KO right now.  I do have a ton of straw buying a bale for gardening, I may do a few straw bags, but I'm a fuel pellet grower through and through. 

Currently in the chamber, a 3rd flush from the 12qt Peace River tubs, and I pulled the 2nd flush last night of a 6qt and the other 6 qt probably later tonight or in the morning harvest going down.  The controller is set at 94, but it goes up to almost 95 when the fan has fully cleared out the fog after the controller turns off. Just playing with the system having a ball... yawl... take care and enjoy the process, it's therapeutic.

Check that thickness of the stipes!  It's a T1 transfer to a jelly jar, not a clone or anything, I did 4 cultures, and this one made the cut. 

That's it for now, I'll get some pics up of the setup and then blow up this thread with some of my old edible block work, which is over at Topia, well most of it, but yeah, it's slow going over yonder!  :sporedrop:

Alrightie folks, had to go pick up some rice bran (and free prints), can't believe I actually used all of the last bag.  So many projects tho', all in one cube ppe tubs, you name it, I was playing with bran.  All good, this bag will last longer, I was using too much in the beginning, it happens, you have to find your sweet spot playing and experimenting. 

The brains of the business...

 

Husky Tote, I believe 17gal, an 80mm waterproof fan with speed controller, and 4" ducting flange, and 4"dryer hose.  Inside the guts of the tote is a House of Hydro 3-disc fogger that can be used up to a 4x4, so it's very overpowered for this tiny tent, but I have run in the past bigger 5 tier taller setups, so it gives me flexibility.  I may end up building me a 2x6 tent from PVC, since I have extra piping already and connectors, would only need a few pieces to put it together.  In the meantime, this cheapo clearance MG tent (sitting in rafters waiting on me brand new) will get ER' done for a while. I will tell you; it was smaller than I was thinking, but for 25 bucks a few years back, and the old tent worn pretty good, I grabbed it, sucker for a sale.

My High tech grow light, many mushrooms grown with this 6500k bulb.  It's just an extension cord, plug in socket, and bulb (never mind the splitter, 2 bulbs unnecessary, but was used at one time).

Cheap temp gauge that has surprisingly lasted a long time, it gives humidity too, but it's off, and Out is actually the inside temp.





All pics taken at the same time, Here is the actual humidity, cheap one is off quite a bit, but yeah, glorified inside temp sensor really. 

That's it, the controller is brand new, the old one before my walkabout was acting up, calibration issue, old AF, but I have it as a backup, I'll check it out when I have time.

Oman, unrelated to GH growing, but thank you to @Phaethon, @Stagger, and @Imatryin for the letters.  Really excited to get zaps going, and semps I've been gawking at for some time, but WoW @Stagger, you went over the top with your package, you made me smile so big, and I've always wanted a rematch with Estero.  I had a print years ago (wild coast too), and it was just a PITA and a tough print to deal with in general, and it just never happened. The India Pan sounds interesting to, but TY for the Bisporus, been looking for this one for a long time.  I keep getting burned on Pan Cinctulus genetics to, but in due time, I'll get me some Cincts.  Been eying those blue pearls for GOD knows how long.  I appreciate all of you, zaps, semps, and PANS... OMy!!

Back to it, I meant to make up some woodie blocks last night for the Pink Oysters jars, but I had to debone a really big plant, and it couldn't wait until the morning, so that took precedence and was a bit of a chore late at night, wasn't happy about it, but INTO the jars (half gallon) she goes. 


I like her, but she does tend to pop some hermie pods, and my GDP is SUPER stable and I can keep them small, I defeloiated and trained this BIG fast grower to 32 nodes and still couldn't slow her down. Her name is Block Head Betty!



AND... there is your reason she's gone


In other news, the Pan 12qt gave up a nice 3rd flush, this is the one that took the blunt of the wetness, yup, slight case of trich happening in the corner, the benefit of no liners... too.  No worries, it was the best tub and was just spitting out love for me, it's outside in an old Mono with my cactus and baobabs, I misted them this morning with the water hose for shits and giggles. 
















Check out how dense the stipe is, short with a huge cap, pretty Wild!

Peace River fruits can get BIG in a chamber, did well in a passive tub to, but it's no competition in that aspect


Group shot of most of the biggest fruits, random thought, the low spawn rate 12 qts did the best, the 1/3 ratio tub is horrific, but that culture isn't great either, double wammy!  Either way, I just wanted to play, before getting the tent back up and running... and a rematch with tubs was mandatory!

Alright break time, I have 4 woodie blocks sterilizing as I type this, I love the smell of wood pellets and Bran in the morning!  I'll show you my process shortly... Anyway... Enjoy the Day :mushroom2:

Alright folks, I have 4 woodie blocks sterilized for 2 hours, I used to run them for 2.5, but 2 hours works and I have multiple runs at 2 so no worries. I am at lower elevation, go 2.5 to be safe or higher up the mountain.

I killed the PC early on, it was leaking in the back, and I noticed putting the lid on that it was super easy to seal the Presto.  It should be tougher to seal the lid, it was too easy, and it was stuffed with 4 bags to the gills.  I had been talking about changing the gasket, well, I pulled the bobber (before it came up to 15psi) and changed out the pressure plug and gasket.  Solid snug fit now, and that old gasket put in work for me, so many HWFP block runs, workin' overtime!  Thank you, gasket and plug, now off to the recycle bin, my friend. 

I haven't pulled the bobber in some time, I had a bag get just a piece of it stuck in the groove of the lid, YEAH, gawd awful noise, and pulled the weight Real quick.  I have never popped a pressure plug, but I do keep it away from me for safety reasons and not blast me in the face if it goes, but I'm quick to pull a bobber if I know somethings not right.  Pro tip, KNOW THY Equipment! 

As I have stated previously, I was addicted to making blocks for about 4 years give or take, all wood lovers, I don't do manure for edible/med blocks, played with straw a little, but pellets, say no more, let's ROCK some Blocks!

My bagger tool, it's to keep the bag open to pour pellets and easier to pour water too.  Most of my work is with Pitt Boss pellets, but these were so cheap before I went walkabout, so... they were ready to go... and get to work for me.





My PC is only 16qts, so this recipe is for that reason.  If I had the taller 23 qt, I could do bigger bags, but I prefer to do 4 at a time (almost 5lbs without spawn), instead of 2.  That being said, I used to run blocks with more water, it worked, but slower colonization, and lose one here and there.  I have many cycles over and over with this moisture content, it's perfect. 

5 cups of HWFP
1/2 cup Rice Bran (1/4 for shiitakes)
1 liter of water, or 34oz, just over a quart. 



Pellets and water mixed together





Let them expand, it doesn't take long, even with cold water, makes no difference.  Then take a Dab of Bubble Rosin while you wait...



Now I put in the Bran once the pellets expand, give them a quick shake to mix, they will get shaken later (when cooled) with spawn as well.

Dry flakes on the bag, but nothing sticking to bag with wetness, this is what you are looking for.



I put 8 rings, or two layers to raise the trivet for more water, overfilling the PC to high on the lower bags can result in taking in moisture, too soggy of a bag is NO Bueno!

I am a manure grower through and through most of the time, but I ran out of manure, getting more soon, so I'm playing with CV+ as well.  I'm not a Tek sort of cultivator, I just mix manure, coco, and verm, that is my go-to most of the time and pasteurize for 90-120 minutes at 150-160 degrees.  My current subs are horse manure/coco/verm/oyster shell flour/compost, and WC.  I have worm bins for gardening and compost piles; that's me being a dirt maker playing in the mud.

CV+ is super simple, I have 10 trays almost finished colonizing, just weigh your brick, multiply by 5 and adjust Verm amount to the weight of Coco.  For instance, I just did (5 days ago) a 500g coco brick, 48oz of Verm, and 2500ml of water, comes out Perfecto!  Be careful adding a gallon of water to a 650 brick, they aren't all created equally, WEIGH them.

CV+ is with nutrients, a micro bottle, and low npk bottle, it's a fairly newer way of growing, but it can be done without pasteurizing if you get the right bottles and insoluble seems to be the way, or hot bath for 90-120 minutes... IT IS!

Hey fungus folks, back to work, went ahead and knocked up 4 woodie blocks with Pink Oyster WBS spawn.  I forgot how much work it is to mix the bags, got the blood flowing, I enjoyed it.  Smelling those blocks just brings me back to the beginning of my edible/med block journey.  You know, it's time to show and tell a bit more, I know I'm fairly new around here, but I'm a block making fool, same name over at Topia (without the 77), I don't BS about cultivation. 

In other news, I also knocked up 6 quarts of WBS... Pan Eungai, Pan Blue Springs, Cambo Komodo/BVI, yup going PAN crazy!  I also shot up some Mexicana, Natalensis (looks like the real NAT, I've already grown Ocra a few times, bags, tubs), and Ingeli.  I am really excited for all of them, especially the Ingeli, very intrigued with this one for some reason.  This will be my first Cambo if everything works out, really excited for possible Red Spore Caps.  I believe the Blue Springs and Eungai can give up Red Spores too. Time will tell, so I'm going to be running Exotics and Edibles mainly through the tent.  I can't grow some of them right now, it's just too hot, but I'll wait to run colder species when the time is right.  For now, Pink Oyster blocks in my future... OH YEAH!

what are you growing in a tent with that equipment? you dont need all that for cubes if yorue growing cubes, not necessary,.

Great to see you around fiddle, I started growing around 2010 or 11 using Franks WBS write up at the time.  I lurked for years before creating an account over at Topia around 2019 maybe, but I've lurked here too the longest when I was just growing cubes.  What really got me back interested was Choempi on RIU, I was like... are you serious.

I go all the way back to 1995, I bought ones of those homestead book company kits (betting you remember), yeah, I blew it on the agar, and being so young at that time, no patience, it sat, then multiple moves, and poof... it's GONE! Yup, you could say I've always been interested in growing, and it took on a life of its own.  Memory Lane, must be the Mary Jane!

Oh for cubes, no, I'm a tub bag grower, mainly 12qts or 6's, but I don't grow too many cubes these days, unless it's from Faht which he doesn't breed anymore, but his Mak 118 gave up massive amounts of goods, I save cubes for friends for safe fruits that aren't tampered with, hard to trust these days and solid PE/TaT potency.

This tent is mainly for edible/med blocks, currently dialing in the environment with some passive Pan tubs I grew to prove it can be done without a tent. I had to soak the casing, and offset the lids, but it brought me back to learning what they need by keeping an eye on the fruits, Mush Luv for tubs, a way to get too many REAL quick.

I have 10 Peace River Trays I'm going to run, just meal prep style, and they are just about ready to case.  I'll run through those, then I have some Pink Oyster blocks coming up after that, and I'll get the Lions Mane spawned when it's ready.  Then, I have 3 different Pans coming up, some Mexicana, NAT, and Ingeli that I'm intrigued with.  I haven't even worked with the free prints yet, so I'm well stocked with fun guy stuff.  Once it goes to cold season, I'll get the King Trumpets going, shiitakes, etc...

It looks like that is just a temp gauge if you need to control the heat/cold but it isn't something I use.  I have a tiny probe that tells me what the temp is inside the tent, but that's it.  You can use a cycle timer, or a controller, either way, you have to dial it in for your specific environment. 

The humidifier you listed would work, but you will be filling that thing all the time.  I used to use a coolmist Vicks back in the day, holds just over a gallon and I piped it in with an old vacuum hose that would have went out to the street for pickup.  With that setup, I ran a small 120mm waterproof cpu fan, that lightly lowered the humidity, with a 1 min on 5 off setting. 

My current setup, it's active air 24/7, no exhaust needed, it doesn't have time to get stagnate with the trickle of constant intake from the 80mmm fan. 

My very first setup was old school, slices in the tent for air (40 dollar vicks US), keep clear packing tape around to adjust, and a cycle timer.  Be aware that a cycle timer can work, but during the night cycle, I would dial it down, easy to wake up to trays you will have to pour off.  There are many ways to make it work, it really boils down to, how much you want to spend.  I finally went with a 3 disc, I bought another Vicks and it was a dud, so I said I'm done with that being maxxed out and working hard with a bigger 5 tier tent, did fine with smaller ones. It's WAY overpowered for this baby tent, but I'm probably going to build a custom pvc pipe setup eventually, 2x6x7 or something, those dimensons work perfect for my mud room.  Alright, I could talk turkey all night, I love this GAME!

I have a House of Hydro 3 disc with the float setup, yessir, a single disc can work and will work for most folks, ran a single disc US for years and very successful.

I'ma be culting tamps caerulescens ttbvi Portland or pans n many many others 😶‍🌫️ I'm a tub grower too though I like to learn also. So for all it's worth let's convert a grow tent unused into a makeshift martha! xD

Who knows I might cult erething once 😍

So il prob run 80mm fan or 60mm (got both) n that humidifier in the pic just unsure what to use to tell humidifier to turn on every 45 min for 5 or 10 min or 15 min lol gotta dial it in myself though unsure what exactly I'm looking for to start and stop power to my humidifier on a timed basis looped preferably

dude i been sleepin on this MusLuvR biz. Dude is a myco wiz wtf.
I feel so lame.  I got this badass spiderfarmer tent all setup and i've been so busy with work it just sits empty meanwhile this guy takes a home-depot martha and just YIELDS. 

I got a lot to learn here.  I feel unworthy of my tent!
