Do these rye berries look underhydrated?
    #29615918 -

I think my jars have started to stall. They seemed pretty aggressive at first but I didn't notice any change over the last 24 hours.

I opened one because it showed no growth and the grains seemed a bit dry and starchy, but I'm not totally sure. Here's what they look like inside when cut in half:

rye looks fine, what's the gas exchange like in those jars?

what species are you growing

edit: take pictures of the stalled jars.  contaminated?

I had between 2-3 holes for GE which I think was too much so I covered all except one yesterday.

Cubes.

They're not technically stalled yet, I guess, it just seems like growth went very fast and then suddenly slowed down dramatically over last 24-48 hours to the point I don't really notice any changes. These first two jars showed the most quick early growth but the others basically colonised the inoculation points (in like a vertical streak down the side where the LC went and at the bottom) and haven't jumped ahead like these. It's been six days.

Have you given them a shake yet?

Most of them. I left one alone for now just to have a reference over the next few days and I think one just hasn't really started to grow much at all yet so didn't see the point for that one.

2-3 of the ones I shook have seemingly started to poke back through (I see a few colonised grains that I didn't see after shaking), so they're not completely stalled. Can it just be normal for growth to slow down after being rapid at first? Because honestly bacteria doesn't seem like the culprit and there are no wet grains. I'm thinking maybe too dry or something to do with gas exchange, if anything. It's kind of strange some of the jars barely have any growth since it's an isolate.

They look good from here. If anything, I'm curious how big the GE holes are & how/why you covered them. πŸ€”

You're probably overthinking & overreacting. Haha

Temperature can have an affect on growth speed too but, once again, I'm sure it's neither too hot nor cold. 😁

Between one and three 1/4 inch holes covered by those sticky paper filters. 2-3 on most.

I was using the jar lids prior to this for something else. Doing a single 5/16 inch on my new batch but it'll be with a different LC so not sure how useful the comparison will actually be.

Temperature has been consistent.

The ones I shook have recovered some though so maybe it is impatience yeah lolπŸ˜“

I'm sure you're fine. 3 - 1/4in holes may be too big but you live and learn. Not a big deal and nothing to stress about, long term. Watch them and adjust accordingly for next time -- whatever fits your preference & journey. πŸ€—

--More GE will actually speed up colonization but can also promote early pinning & dry out grains -- just info & observations, don't stress it brotherman. 😁

If I remember correctly, I use 3 - 1/8in holes with synthetic filter discs and have for years. It's either 1/16 or 1/8in, maybe the pic will help. πŸ€”πŸ₯΄πŸ€£

It's been so long since I've made new ones so my memory is hazy (I've reused them for almost a decade) but I do know it takes MONTHS for unused jars to begin losing moisture for me so I'd just be patient and enjoy the learning process. You're doing great! Expect to fuck up eventually 😏🀣 but that all part of the game, helps you learn and get better. πŸ™ŒπŸ»πŸ«ΆπŸ»

Oh, one big ol' hole jammed snug with polyfill never was a problem for me either so, like I said, I'm sure you have nothing to worry about. πŸ₯³
