What do you do to avoid burnout? * 1
    #29601604 -

Hello.

Looking for advice and stories of how not to burn out in life.

Currently I have a lot of free time and a lot of things I wanna do as I'm not working. I'm fairly sure I'm on the road to burnout because at the moment I can't enjoy any of my usual enjoyment things like movies, podcasts.

I don't feel depressed or anxious. I even did a depression score and it came back as mild. And the things I ticked yes on linked to the ADHD issues. So I believe part of the disinterest in things is more of a focus issue. But I AM doing thinks I like, including going to yoga, daily long walks and regular social outings.

I'm just wondering, particularly for people with ADHD who tend to dip and dive with their focus levels, how do you stop burning yourself out?

The problem isn't focus, it's a defective reward center.

Healthy brain: brain wants dopamine, selects an activity it knows will bring dopamine (checking the fridge, doing drugs, watching TV,...), sends a signal to your reward center, reward center attaches happy hormones like dopamine to the signal and the signal finally gets to you. A healthy brain can keep this process going for hours and hours.

ADHD brain: brain wants dopamine, selects an activity it knows will bring dopamine, sends a signal to your reward center...and this is where things break down. Either the reward center completely fails and it refuses to attach any hormones at all, leaving you in that purgatory of boredom, or it attaches the hormones and then abandons the process after ten minutes.

Avoiding burnout is acknowledging that your brain is structurally defective and having patience with yourself.

Thank you that is well out.
Yes I understand that it's a dopamine deficiency. I think my worry is that when I find my groove by goal setting and sort of running myself to do things I like and chores through anxiety I just run myself into the ground. Alternatively I do nothing at all. I am not one to sit around and do nothing, as much as I wish I could sometimes.

At the moment I'm just feeling a bit stressed because I can't even enjoy sitting watching the tv without having to do a task on top of it (the typical two things at once that improves my focus on both).

I have bought some simple craft items (jewellery and beads) that I can do while chatting to my housemate or watching tv. It's helping but still feels chore-y.

I think you are right that I need to work on acceptance of this fact to help stop running myself in the ground. I need to accept some boredom m.

I aim to be as tenacious as you.

I burn out very quickly in those high stress times. That's why I don't think I'll be having children.

Good on you!

Am in a similar boat in that am married and working with a young kid. Not working isnt really an option so just keep the axe to the grindstone and do what I need to in order to afford the life we have. Every sunday I go and play cards (magic the gathering) with a group of friends, something weve been doing for well over 10 years now. It just provides a break from being a husband, father, employee, and all the chores that can come with aforementioned territory - and just lets me bro out with other guys, laugh, curse, share stupid stories, talk football, and really just be a guy thinking about how to win a card game.

It is truly my therapy, and has created a wonderful work/life balance.

That, and weekend drinks with the wife once our daughter goes to bed, and vacations here and there - it all adds up to help life feel less like all work, and instead feel really balanced.

I prefer to have conversations with those close to me about feeling of burnout and how it feels like I'm unhealthily burdened with too many things and how we should make an effort to not load me down with more.

Then I watch everybody throw more on my plate with complete disregard for everything I just said

It's fuckin awesome

I go to the beach; I enjoy the 20-30 minute walk there too. My job sometimes burns me out; washing dishes can be stressful a lot of the time. The job is easy and not at the same time; it's hard to keep up when it gets busy.

Burning out is natural. But long from cardio helps, runners high resets .

Good advice I think running and exercise is helpful. I've gone for 45- 60 min walk every day for the past 20 days or so, plus 3-4 days yoga.

Except for listening to music, I get bored easily with consuming media. Most of the time it feels like fast food dopamine, and I get this nagging feeling I'm wasting time.

Growing things, making art/music, dancing...basically doing things that allow me to express myself beyond words is how I keep from burning out. I also find it helps to have multiple options to rotate between, so I don't get burned out with the things that keep me from burning out.

I don't always have as much time as I wish I did to do those things, but I always make time where I can. Sometimes I have to force myself to, and it can feel like work, but it's always worth it in the end. I feel better when I'm creating more and consuming less.

Just self-awareness. Reflecting on how much time Im spending on one task or activity. Once I start feeling like Im burning myself out, i will say "Ok, I am taking a break now!" and force myself to relax or to do something unrelated to the previous task/activity. Ive been burned out on everything before. Variety is the key as well. Mix up your life with different interesting, engaging things and avoiding burnout should be a lot easier.

I feel this too.  And would like to get back into a daily sitting meditation routine.

I spend a lot of time on my phone trying to avoid boredom and other feelings I'd prefer to ignore, like sadness.

But it's exhausting.

I listened to a podcast recently where they were talking about hedonic depression.  Which is a form of depression where pleasure is chased.

And in my experience joy and pleasure have very different somatic and mental tones.  With joy being a lot more nurturing in the long run.

Speaking of, I think I'll turn my phone off for the day and try to be present with my body my feelings and maybe some books (as well as some boredom).

Sometimes when you complain all the time it becomes the only thing you know how to do. It really is a state of mind.

I know personally my resentments and complaining are often a form of masking, not wanting to sit with or admit sadness or fear.

I.e. secondary emotions.

And it's definitely a habit.

Fuck, this is so true.

I have people in my life that bitch and complain about everything. It's constant and it's so mentally draining. I agree it becomes a state of mind. Complaining and overanalyzing and criticizing everyone and everything.

Routines can appear deep fast, it’s good to get out of those shitty behavior patterns if one can.

Working 12-14 hour days at work right now. Magic the gathering in my spare time getting me through it though. Deck building, testing, and real world results is so fucking fun of a process

Sounds fun! I always thought I would like Magic.

Yeah I agree about the process testing being fun. I'm super keen to start developing and testing (using dummy systems) day trading strategies!
