Jack Frost - Odd Mutation (Coral Blobs) * 3
    #29603321 -

Decided to try my hand at some JF because I've only ever worked with regular ol' cubes.  Didn't think much into it, sent a 1:1 mono tub.  Sub was on the wet side.
Plates and spawn were VERY slow to colonize (Plates 4 weeks started from LC, WBS 4 weeks from plates).  Tub took 3+ weeks to colonize and got SUPER matted layer of myc on the top (didn't use much of a casing layer at all).

Finally started to se some pins, which all mostly aborted.  Then the "blobs" came which was expected after reading a bit.

The blobs have morphed into a coral/brain like structure all over the surface and sides.  From what I have read/seen in the last couple of weeks online, it is more of an "enigma" like fruit structure. However those are a mutation of TW and APE if i'm not mistaken? JF is a TATxAPE.

The "normal looking fruits I do have don't look as advertised (caps folding up) and wrinkle like cap perimeter.  Gills are however blue as it gets.

TLDR; Wtf is going on here and has anyone had experience with this?  Should I clone for science?

Attached (hopefully pic works:

You should absolutely clone the mutant! That’s cool AF!

That's cool asf. I heard J-Frost can pop out enigma type mutations but this is the first post I've seen of it. That's awesome 🔥 Gotta love the diversity of cube genetics lol

Super cool! :awesome:

Looks likes the strain Enigma "contaminated" your Jack Frost genetics. Awesome! :yesnod:

Or maybe Enigma and Jack Frost share the same lineage? :strokebeard:

That looks amazing, a weird mutant moonscape.. will that coral stuff develop gills and drop spores eventually?

Probably not. I think those types of mutations are sterile. But a clone culture might allow for the same expression on future grows.

LC, Enigma was a Tidal Wave mutation, right? And JF was TAT and APE? Either way, maybe it’s the PE in them. Pretty cool, regardless.

I've not seen the enigma type drop spores (or grow anything remotely resembling a gill), but would be cool to run it as long / far as possible just in case. Maybe this one's different, it's a mutant, who knows.

Some other crazy mutant shapes here including a milder one that does sporulate here. IDK if those spores would germ into more mutants, or revert. All kinds of wild fucked up creatures in that thread.

Update:
The whole tub is covered in the coral now.  I sent a piece of the big brain one to agar.

I would call that shit "brain freeze" if you can get it stabilized and replicate it. Hopefully you can.

The Enigma mutation is a result of decades of inbreeding. Enigma came out of the Golden Teacher lineage which is one of the oldest and most inbred strain lines, so Jack Frost shares the same inbred ancestry as Enigma because TAT is a Golden Teacher lineage derived strain.

Not true. Enigma was originally a Tidal Wave mutation. Tidal Wave is a PE and B+ cross. It’s has nothing to do with GT.

B+ came from the Golden Teacher lineage along with many other strains. You can see that here in this phylogenetic tree chart from a research paper that was published a few years ago that did full genome sequencing on over 100 cultivated cube strains. The big mass of blue circles on the right shows all the strains that came out of the Golden Teacher lineage and how closely related they are and all the GT lineage strains that were sequenced are listed on the right which includes B+.

In OP’s JF mutation and Enigma, the common denominator is the PE in both mutations. That’s the interesting part to ponder. PE is itself a mutation, likely from a combination of selection and years of inbreeding. It causes a lot of blobs and throws off some weird shit sometimes.

All cubensis share a common ancestor. Regardless of their single point of origin, B+ and Golden Teacher were isolated and bred (and inbred) along divergent paths for different traits over many years. Eat a handful of both and see what I mean. Therefore, whatever gene caused the mutation in Enigma cannot be attributed directly to what we now refer to as Golden Teacher.

If you want to try and rewrite years of cultivation history, I guess that’s your choice; I’ve got no power to stop you. But I’d love to hear what your credentials are that allow you to make so many statements about so many different areas of mycology, fungal genetics, and cultivation.

And yes, they are all cubes.

I keep up with the latest Psilocybe research.

B+ is also a common denominator in Enigma and Jack Frost and as it's been a more frequently grown strain that comes from the GT lineage it's going to be much more inbred than PE. Inbreeding tends to produce similar results across all organisms. Albinism is usually one of the first visual genetic defects to pop out from inbreeding, followed by more and more genetic deformities that result over time in sterility and the inability to reproduce. Like Enigma. The same thing happened with cheese rind fungus. An albino strain popped out from strain crosses and was then made senescent from the genetic defects that build up through repeated cloning to the point where it's now thought it's likely to go extinct. I think it's likely that the same thing will happen to Enigma from repeated cloning over time.

And it's not rewriting history it's correcting history. Let's look at the B+ origin story as an example. The story goes Mr G was sent a print that was mislabelled as P azurescens, he reports there was a lab accident where the spores were exposed to heat and what he grew out he called B+. Decades later full genome sequencing in the paper I cited revealed that B+ comes from the Golden Teacher linage. Therefore Mr G's mystery mislabelled print must have came from a Golden Teacher. Mystery solved. History corrected.

The coral looking types like this and enigma look beautiful but also like theyd be a real pain in the balls to harvest. I guess having no spores to worry about would be nice though!

Nope. B+ has nothing to do with Jack Frost.

Mr. G said he crossed a cube with Azurescens to create B+. You’re hybridizing two origin stories. Wrong again.

Look, dude. You are obviously intentionally trying to derail threads in mush cult. You are trolling in a different way than I’ve seen here, recently. Most trolls try to waste peoples time by asking for stupid advice or pretending to be retarded (Tultedspoon comes to mind). You’ve taken a different approach and, I have to admit, it’s creative. I think I know who you might actually be, but it would be a guess.

I don't know anything about Mr.G, but I am sure he didn't cross two different psilocybe species :strokebeard:
