Odd Mutation
    #6719721 -

My cakes have all developed strange bulbous growths on the top, either through some mutation or something wrong in my FC. They resemble a knot of stem tissue, and in some cases a knot of cap tissue. The tissue blues up when picked, and smells like the shrooms.

Just curious if this is common, or if I'm screwing something up, or if I just created a cube pouch fungus!

this is usually due to heavy chemical use in the lab areas, like spraying too much lysol and some of it getting in there and touching it.

or, another culprit is putting your cakes directly on the perlite/whatever, and the cakes are wicking up god knows what, in addition to way too much water.

from the pics, it could be either imho.

Actually this is usually the result of mutated spores. There is a name for these little knots and i can't remember it but it is not that uncommon. I have some too with my golden teachers strain.

mutated spores? ..as in crazy substrains?
possible, but i find it unlikely, considering the pins at the bottom of the cake arent exhibiting the same symptom.

its localized to the tops of apparently two cakes, both of the tops of the cakes have bluing...
that makes me think chemicals
since chemicals would land on top first, would possibly cause bluing

perhaps you're right, i would just like some more info or more pics of this not uncommon thing resulting from mutated spores.

I always wash my hands with disinfectant before picking shrooms, and only lightly touch the top of the cakes when picking. Perhaps that did it?

RE: the perlite theory. I used the instructions that came with a kit I bought, which said to use the lids of the jars to keep the cakes odff the perlite. Problem is, there are holes in the lids (obviously), so the cakes are probably wicking water from the perlite....but nothing weird is going on below. In fact, the lower regions of my cakes are flourishing and producing great shrooms.

I can take more pics, but I'm really just trying to decide if there's something wrong, if I can fix it, or if this just happens.

Oh...that was a hair on the lens, not on the cake.

That sounds important due to the localized nature of the problem... Just wash yer hands with soap and water, and rinse well before picking.

Once the cakes are colonized, and in the FC, they are much more resistant to contam, so you can chill on the "disinfectant"... Just keep up the FAE to prevent cobweb mold, and you'll be golden!

Yeah, I have an air pump on a timer for auto FAE, and I also fan them 2-3 times a day.

Upon further reading, I see I should have made more/larger holes, so my next FC is going to be a monotub.

Currently I'm using a TiT method, fruiting Golden Teacher, EQ, Pink Buffalo, and B+.

Its a neat introduction to the different strains--the certainly have their own traits.

The EQs blue like nothing I've ever seen. Hopefully this correlates with potency!
