I was talking to you. You disputed something I said about gene expression in clone material and I explained it to you and provided source material that supported what I was saying.

And as to its relevance to this thread, clone material can produce areas of thin wispy growth that people can easily mistake for a fungal contam.

Like here.

Interesting, happened several times to me as well in clones. How did you go about the plate in the picture? Did you transfer the most rhizomorphic part (top)? Did it eventually stabilize to a more rhizomorphic shape?

Anyway, I'm not dealing with clones in the OP, it was from a spore print.

That plate doesn't look axenic.

It wasn't my plate. I collect pics that illustrate various forms of mycelium growth and behaviour and put them into graphics to use in my group. If you encounter multiple growth phases growing out of a clone culture take the strongest looking growth.

When you take clone material from the stipe there are multiple types of mycelium with different functions contained in the sample. So in the pic I posted the strongest growth is probably structural mycelium with thicker hyphal walls that support the stipe and cap when it opens and the fine halo of mycelium growing out at the bottom is probably branching hyphae that knit the structural hyphae together.

From my own experiments the lower on the stipe you take the sample the closer it's genetic expression to the the hyphae under the surface and the higher up the stipe or cap you clone produces multiple types of mycelium growth on agar as the genetic expression of the hyphae become more differentiated the higher up the fruit they occur culminating in the basidia and spores.

So I decided to try some transfers, all of them using the trench method (first attempt). I basically transferred from 3 of the previous plates:

Follows pictures of the used donor plates.

From one of the first row, I tried to transfer just the halo:

From one of the second row I tried to transfer just a wedge of the border:

From one of the third row I tried to transfer just some ropes of mycelium using a pair of tweezers:

Notice how in the meantime, the halo started looking less organized, as if it started to turn into the tomentose white mycelium on top...

I also kept one of the plates as is, just to see what happens, and how the halo will evolve.

Not even relying on AI to spread horseshit made up information anymore.

Dave, you’re a fucking problem and you should leave these forums.

Dave, most of us see you for what you are and do not want you here.  Newbies might eat your bullshit up but those of us that have been cultivating long enough see you for what you are.

Sealion all you want, but your time here will be cut short if you continue to be a lying pain in the ass.  You've already been caught lying about what other experienced growers here have posted and manipulating their data to fit your bullshit arguments.

Your ratings are tanking and you're going to get increasingly confronted for your bullshit.  It might even end in a ban if you don't knock it off.

So once again, post more grows and less words.

So much bluster about googling stuff, so little time spent UTFSE right here in River City.

Saying that a thing happens is meaningless without a proper sense of time and scale. Cubensis are a ruderal species with a relatively short life cycle, and react quickly to environmental changes. I've watched hundreds of plins immediately kick out new mycelium from every side, including the cap, when laid flat onto new agar. "Fuzzy feet" are common because both atmospheric moisture and condensation will be more highly concentrated close to the substrate surface. Whatever immediate switching there is between modes of growth is happening pretty fucking fast from a human perspective, and is pretty obviously triggered by changes in moisture first and foremost, and then the presence or absense of fresh new substrate to colonize. Nutrients come in third at best.

And to be clear, pulling a bunch of random factoids from other clades in the fungal kingdom is akin to giving someone advice on sexual health using examples from studies done on lungfish. Actually, it's much worse than that, because humans are still way more closely related to lungfish than most fungi are to each other.

aaaaand how did you conduct these 'experiments'

what was the control?

Re: Would love to hear opinions about this weird grow pattern in transfers [Re: mushboy]

The control was the spore derived parent culture that had never fruited. It's a very simple experiment to conduct if anyone wants to try it for themselves. Transfer clone material from the base of the stipe, the top of the stipe, cap material and just for fun immature gill material to a standardised agar recipe and make a transfer of the parent culture at the same time as a control. Incubate and observe.

Everyone who's cloned from fruits a few times knows that several different types of mycelium growth can emerge and grow out of the clone material on agar. The reason why it happens shouldn't be controversial as it's just basic facts about fungal biology and behaviour and the way that fungi construct their fruits. If people can't distinguish between established facts about fungi, misinformation, and AI-generated slop, that's a problem they need to solve for themselves.

The sheer genetic diversity and complexity of fungal sexuality make it anything but simple.

Yet you constantly quote google searches which are all AI and mostly have incorrect data. Go back to Redit where you belong.

I'm presenting scientific evidence from the research and telling people where to look that proves what I'm saying is correct. It's not me that's calling well established facts about fungal biology misinformation, lies and AI slop.

wrong answer.

bro you think you are the only one to take clone tissue from all over the fruit body to see what happens?

ive done it countless times and it DOES NOT MATTER where you take the cut. the genes will express themselves no matter where you take from the fruit. and in countless ways. you'd need to take thousands of samples with a proven culture. you would prove that culture with thousands of examples.

stop thinking that the one and not even definable 'experiment' you did and observed is now the establishment fact. like, who do you think you are?

grow more mushrooms. stop arguing nonsense.

If you want to compare the mycelium growth from different clone samples to their spore derived parent mycelium what else are you going to use as the control? In reality you don't need a control as you're comparing the growth of clone samples from different parts of the fruit. The experiment just illustrates a widely observed phenomenon in the community and demonstrates well known facts about fungal biology so I'm not claiming to discovered something new. It's already proven in the published research and literature.
