Some updated pics.

No sign of fruiting stopping although the cold nights we've been having end in a couple of days when night temperatures rise above 10C so it will be interesting to see what happens.











I'm going to plant some of these cakes into an outdoor tub of their favourite grasses I've prepared if they stop fruiting and see if they fruit naturally again in the Autumn.

I used the grass species that the hyphae of P semilanceata preferred in the Keay and Brown paper "Colonization by Psilocybe semilanceata of roots of grassland flora."

Common Bent, Agrostis capillaris,
Creeping Bent, Agrostis stolonifera,
Annual Meadow Grass, Poa annua,
Yorkshire Fog, Holcus lanafus,
Perennial Rye Grass, Lolium perenne,
Tufted hairgrass, Deschampsia cespitosa,
Smooth Meadow Grass, Poa pratensis,
Rough Meadow Grass, Poa trivialis.

I actually started trying to grow Liberty Caps about five years ago as I had a hunch from my reading of the Keay and Brown paper that they didn't feed on decaying roots and potentially could have a symbiotic relationship with certain grass species instead.

So rather than trying to get them to fruit under cultivation conditions (despite getting pins which stalled out in my first spawn jar which I'd cased just to see what happened) I grew a selection of the grass species mentioned and attempted to inoculate the roots with the hyphae to see if I could establish a colony and get them to fruit naturally without artificial nutrients from grain spawn.







As a side experiment, I also killed and rotted the roots of their most preferred grass species, Poa annua, and tried to get the mycelium to grow on them to try to prove that they don't primarily feed on decaying grass roots and as I suspected the mycelium point black refused to grow on the decaying roots at all, despite having a small amount of grain spawn nutrients available to them to power the mycelium forward.



I planted all my inoculated grass plug plants into pH balanced acidic compost in a large outdoor container and grew them on and I've got some pots of their potential host species still growing from back then, so that's where this years spawn cakes are going.

An update and a word of caution..

The sawdust cakes were dunked and new pin sets quickly developed in 18 C conditions. After +1 week I decided to end the project as growth stalled and I don't have very much time these days for dealing with grows. The second flush is not awesome but I got some out of it (and most of the smaller pins are not visible);



And now the warning..!

I picked the small mushrooms and figured I had to test them out in the true spirit of science. It was not much so I ripped off all the tiny pins as well just so that there was at least enough for a small dose and enough to get a light mild feeling to enjoy in the sunset on the balcony.. The fresh material weighed 7,55 g, which would equate to roughly 0.8 g of dried Semilanceata, which should be nothing but a small dose.. Probably 70% of the material was just tiny 3 mm pins. Brewed up the tea and drank it in one shot and noticed early on that it felt a little more than I had expected.. Long story short, I got hit by a brick and blown completely out of it. 2-3 hours in and I had no choice but to shovel down 2 trip-killers, but it did not end there and if anything just propelled even further. At the 5-6 h mark, where one would normally be back to normal, I was convinced to have gone mad forever and things got really scary. Downed 2 more trip-killers and half a bottle of wine in desperation and then eventually around 7 h went in for a landing.

Holy fuck these guys are strong and omg what an astronomic miscalculation of dose. Not sure exactly what to conclude but I have a suspicion that;
  • By the time a pin is formed most of alkaloids per specimen are already set. Which would mean the small weight I had probably equaled something much much larger if libs from the wild had been used.
  • This particular genetic might be very potent.


Anyways, now you know what to expect from these small semis..

A bit of findings from my own ~6 months of experiments. My genetics source was a dry gill. I've just scraped it with a needle to agar. Had some contam issues, esp. bacterial. Was a pain to isolate, but managed to get several genetics in LC form, and on agar.

Here is what I have discovered with my material:
1. Best working grain is rice.
2. Worst - rye, painfully slow and ethereal, barely visible wisp.

My observations also match with Dave's, that this guy definitely likes a preserved structure.

Best, strongest and quickest growth for me was on the following: colonized single rice grain -> agar in the jar -> rice on top (Dave's approach, essentially). It has been the only time I saw rhizos in my cultures, and a very robust growth.

Given it will be a potentially hot summer soon, will attempt a wine cooler modification with some fan-based intermittent FAE. Will share how it goes.

Wow! That's nuts about the potency you experienced! I've been wondering about that myself as I've only tried a couple of micro-doses and I could definitely feel something from the tiny stalled pin I swallowed on an empty stomach the other day. Glad you got out the other side relatively unscathed! Must have been quite the shock.

Can anyone recommend anyone who does HPLC testing at a reasonable price? We should get these bad boys tested. Some of my fruits blue hard towards the end of grow beyond anything I've ever seen in nature. I'm thinking the concentrated nutrients in the grain may be playing a part in increasing potency if you think about the scarce nutrients and competition in grasslands in nature, especially for nitrogen which is vital for alkaloid production.

And talking about blueing fruits, here's the latest update.

I took some pics with a white background and it seems to show their true colour better than against black. I finally got a few fruits that look identical to wild specimens at last.

















All the pots are harvested now so I'm going to leave some as they are are and re-case others to recolonise to see if that makes any difference in growth and to save me fretting about keeping the casing layer hydrated.

I had a stubborn indoor pot that hadn't fruited or gone outside so I tested my hypothesis that flooding could be a fruiting trigger and flooded the pot with rain water and let it sit for 24 hours.

Two days later two tiny primordia have appeared but this time they're growing straight from the surface of the casing layer instead of where the casing layer meets the spawn cake under the surface like the rest of the pots.

I'm thinking that the water would have displaced all the oxygen in the sub and made it anaerobic and they're top fruiting as a result. So some of the pots with and without the extra layer of casing will be flooded as well to see if that makes a difference in the time it takes for the pots starting fruiting again.

Hey Dave,
This is a beautiful result! So awesome to see a wild morphology indoors.

I have a quick question to you. When you are doing a cold shock, how do you do it? Just put a pp5 jar in a fridge @ +5C? What is the filtering setup in your jar lids? I am a bit worried about drying out, so just want to ensure I am doing this properly.

Thank you! Yes, it took a while to get fruits that look exactly like their wild form for some reason. I think it has to be something to do with genetics as it was a multiple dikaryon pot so they all had exactly the same fruiting conditions. I'm still puzzling about where their nipples have gone and why that happened in the first generation.

Regarding the cold shock, I've been letting the casing layer colonise then putting the PP5 pots with their lids on in a plastic lidded container (which helps stop them drying out) in the fridge at around 5C. I'm pretty sure I haven't had to mist mine during the cold shock but I give them a heavy mist before they go in and definitely check the moisture level of the casing layer from time to time though. My pots just have a 6mm hole in the centre of the lid with a couple of layers of micropore over it for ventilation.

Here is parts of this years garden project. Had some leftover tubs with sawdust based cakes. At the end of May I buried it in the bed with planting soil and composted cow manure, then covered it with a small tent. It was basically left there until I decided to remove the cover two months later. And what a surprise;



I got super surprised by the larger flush and went ahead with a panic harvest and ripped it all off almost immediately. Apologize for the bad outdoor photo which was done in a hurry..



Happy with the yield though.

This is one of my albino cultures. See how light colored they are on the gill side.
