I recommend running your substrate a little wetter than you would with a classic.  Try not to let it pin too much. That one wants to make micro fruit if you let it pin too much .  You're better off with a more sparse set with a lot of water behind it.

At least that's the theory right now

Appreciate it. And with how wet my projects are coming out right now, that's music to my ears :lmafo:

IME, putting smashed wedges in the 12-18 month old range to agar was useless. They were just dried wafers, thinner than a breath strip. OTOH, dried grains approximately 2 years old were fucking FIRE, and took off like a rocket.

My opinion is that desiccation of the wedge due to the zip closures not being air-tight is the main issue affecting their length of viability.

I don't even think being smashed hinders the ability for the mycelium to survive as much as drying out does. Nonetheless, I believe it imperative to preserve the wedge, or whichever carrier medium is used, as much as possible while still being able to fit it in an envelope (the cheapest delivery route).

Hereā€™s how Iā€™m sending mine. Double sided taped to the top of a cardstock insert, with a thin channel formed for them to fit into. So that when the bottom of the envelopes get hit by the sorting machines, they are as out of the way as possible. Iā€™m sure handling will still squish them somewhat.

I also impulse sealed them to preserve their life forceā€¦the precious vital fluids.

Nice looking packaging!

I sent a bunch of wedges in impulse sealed tiny mylar bags a while back. Got some feedback that they were kind of a pain to handle, and those even had little notches between the seal strip and the zip closure. I switched to plain 2x3 clear plastic baggies, using only the zip closure to seal, and I think only one person mentioned a zip failure (out of several hundred wedges sent that way by now). I am pretty careful to get as much air out as possible before closing, so it has less chance of popping open when smashed in the sorter.

YMMV of course, but for me, impulse sealing was a bit of a time sink for me and probably for the people I sent those bags to, for little benefit.

You might be on to something with the closure being the weak point for moisture loss. Though I've had mushrooms even in freezer bags (double zip closure) get bendy over time, so I think the thin plastic film is a pretty poor vapor barrier in general.

I just figure it has to make it through the mail and be able to sit for another week or two in case the recipient can't get to it immediately. The zip closures seem to work well enough for that. And it's nice to be able to take a sample and zip it back up in case you manage to fuck up the transfer... It can be hard to impulse seal while preserving the zip closure's usability.

Every one of your reishi wedges is on plate and at grain phase  presently phaethon. Thans again.  Cant wait for this but i gotta.

Smash wedges were never meant as a stoage device. I also have dry grains of fahts that last years.  Smash wedge is supposed to be a jumpstart hail mary.  The concept was to get live work done quickly.

I pre-smash mine with the press i use for printing.  The foam insert has became the standard issue now.  For so many reason.  Ive seen a wedge survive several days in teen temps in a mailbox with a foam insert now.  And now, thanks to lithop, weve seen it go direct to grain which is insane but it appears to have worked.

This idea is genius. Iā€™ve been scratching my head about how to send a wedge. Thank you.

Small eppendorf tubes are the gold standard and what people used before figuring out that bags are sterile enough, if you are curious. They're easier to handle, you can be absolutely sure they're sterile (by pressure cooking), and you can fit a lot in a small package.

But for small trades/giveaways and especially international mailing, this method totally rules. Being able to use regular postage instead of parcel rates makes it super cheap to send cultures anywhere, just like spores.
