Ralph Nader to Debate Ron Paul
    #2939004 - 07/29/04 02:41 AM (12 years, 5 months ago)

TOPIC: Debate between consumer advocate/presidential candidate Ralph Nader and libertarian Congressman Ron Paul (R-TX) on the topic "Wise Governance."

WHEN: Saturday, August 14 at 8:00 PM Eastern. Likely coverage by C-SPAN or CNN.

WHERE: Crown Center, Hampshire College, Amherst, Mass. Drive to center of Amherst, drive Route 116 South for approx. 3 miles, Hampshire College will be on your right.

WHAT: Debate during the 30th annual summer conference of the Northeast Organic Farming Association

CONTACT: Jack Kittredge, Conference Coordinator and Debate organizer, (978) 355-2853, jack@mhof.net

DETAILS:

On Saturday, August 14th, at 8:00PM, at the 30th annual summer conference of the Northeast Organic Farming Association (NOFA), there will be a debate featuring libertarian/Republican Congressman RON PAUL debating RALPH NADER on the topic of "Wise Governance." The debate is scheduled for a full 90 minutes and will include Q&A. Ralph agreed to participate before he announced his plans to run for president. The format in more detail will be as follows:

Part I: 30 minutes on philosophy of government and overview, 15 minutes each by Congressman Paul and Nader to present their philosophy of wise governance and commentary,

Part II: 30 minutes total, 5 minutes each per topic for Paul and Nader to address each of the following topics of particular interest to the organic farming community (but also of wide general interest): (1) use of genetically-engineered organisms, (2) farmers right to raise and sell products such as raw milk and industrial hemp, (3) how to best promote healthy treatment of soil and water in farming

Part III: 30 minutes of moderated Q&A

The Northeast Organic Farming Association (NOFA) is a non-profit organization of nearly 4,000 farmers, gardeners and consumers working to promote healthy food, organic farming practices and a cleaner environment. NOFA has chapters in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont.

Our biggest event of the year is our 3-day summer conference in August at Hampshire College in Amherst, MA. It's a fabulous event and brings a very eclectic crowd from NPR-Ralph Nader types to don't-tread-on-me farmer-type individualists to hard core libertarians.

We always have a debate Saturday night that is intellectually stimulating and great fun. But this summer, we are bringing in the big guns and inviting non-conference people to join us for what should be a great event.

Cost for the debate only is $10. For the 1,000 or so people who will be attending the full conference, the debate is included in the conference charge, but we are opening the debate to non-conference attendees because of the great interest we expect it to draw.

We encourage you to check out the NOFA web site at http://www.nofa.org/. The web site describes the debate as follows:

"With two-time Green Party presidential candidate and longtime consumer advocate Ralph Nader committed to debate eloquent libertarian spokesperson Congressman Ron Paul (R-TX), the evening promises to put fundamental political questions on the table for NOFA members and non-members alike. The debate topic, Wise Governance, will force folks to address issues such as environmental regulation, the market system, and if or how the state should enforce sustainable practices (or perhaps if there should be a state at all)."

Regards,

Randall Shaw
NOFA Summer Conference entertainment coordinator

Should be very good stuff, though it'll be rough on Ralph having all his socialist fantasies shot down on national TV.

Looking very much forward to watching the video on C-Span.org (assuming the put one up), hope it doesn't disappoint.

It definitely shouldn't...

...can't be any worse than the real Presidential Elections at the very least.

You know ... Nader should stop deluding himself and run for senate or something he could actually win. I really dont see the point of him even running this year. Why run on principle just to prove something when you could actually run for senate or some office he might actually have a stab at winning and make a real difference?
