Been forever since I bumped this thread but I am back with a new approach. I was inspired by a reddit post where someone was able to grow caerulipes in a large jar. Its worth a look if niche mushroom cultivation interests you guys. I will include a snip if you don't care to click the link.

Now as for how it worked? not entirely sure. My first theory is the small amount of naturalized substrate. op stated it came from where they found the mushrooms. The other factor could be the spores sprinkled directly onto the substrate. Perhaps the large amount of genetic diversity and a bit of luck created a culture capable of fruiting inside.

I still do think substrate will play a big role in getting them to fruit. To try and emulate this I took a few wide mouth pints and placed about a half inch of birch duff in them and sterilized. The duff was basically a rotten birch log that had basically turned to dirt and a little bit of soil from the surrounding area. I inocculated each of the jars with a single small agar wedge, and they are nearing full colonization. Very healthy looking myc, I think scaling it down to a smaller amount of substrate has allowed for better consolidation. I still have never seen these mushrooms in real life but from what I can tell they are some really tiny bastards. Can't imagine they need a whole lot of substrate to fruit from.

I am planning on replacing the lid with a moist paper cloth to initiate fruiting. One jar I will place in a window sill that gets down to 50f at night and the other I think I will leave in the fridge over night, and take out during the day. My theory is that they may just need a bit of a cold shock to initiate fruiting. From the research I have done cross referencing inaturalist observations with historical weather data, it seems that the night time low dipping into the 50s is what initiates pinning. The daytime temps were all much higher than any other woodlover fruiting temps, some of them even observed with day time highs in the high 80f. It seems that the first signs of fall creeping in, a cold shock if you will, is the necessary factor for fruiting. This is all just a theory though, so anyone reading this in the future, just know this might have been a massive waste of time

I am also going to try spawning some grain to a 50/50 mix of coir and duff, I will post pics of that in a few weeks.

If cold shock doesn’t work on its own, maybe play around with humidity levels/substrate evaporation rates.

I don’t know anything about cultivation but I know their habitat well. The signs I look for are several days of heavy rain coupled with the chilly nights and warm days (large temperature fluctuation). I believe the temperature swings creates both high humidity and faster evaporation during those times by changing RH; fast evaporation during the warm day followed by a cool down with slower evaporation and some condensation at night. Those conditions typically follow the hot and dry weather of late summer when the woods are crispy.

Looks like you have some good growth there, I’m sure you’re gonna crack this soon enough. 🤞

That’s exciting.
Good luck with it and def keep us posted.
I’d love to have a go with these one day.
Even just making an LC to spread around would be amazing.

I will make up some LC to share when I get fruits, even if I happen to stumble across them while hunting before I succeed with cultivation. I have shared this culture with a few people but I don't really know if its one that is any good for fruiting. I have also dumped so much mycelium in the woods I think I will get fruits by the end of next summer at the very latest.

That's sick. That was the first wild species I've attempted to find. Still haven't found it 🤣🤣

Best of luck. Hopefully the forests you've nocced up come to the fruiting fold

Got some caerulipe on grains atm.

Not sure how to spawn them

Outdoors spawning is several months away

And thus this particular spawn must go indoors in bags, jars or a coir grain monotub

What does the gracious Masters of this thread suggest

I've been expanding all of my woodlovers on bags of sterilized woodchips mixed with either a bit of coir or some cashed potting soil from repotting houseplants. Woodchips alone don't seem to hold a ton of moisture. If you can find some for these guys I would use some wood that's been decomposed a bit, don't know if you're living in a frozen hellscape like me lol. I used Scott's earthgro brown mulch right out of the bag for caerulipes and ovoids, spawned to some fabric pots and put a thick casing on to retain moisture. It's an uphill battle with 20% rh in the dead of winter. Fermented chips are still my favorite substrate but my fermenting barrel is currently frozen solid.

Better photo of the myc and a pic of how I plan on introducing fruiting conditions. Almost looks like knotting but I don't want to get too excited yet.

Update on the 50/50 mix of rotten birch and CVG. I sterilized this in a pressure canner and inoculated in front of a flow hood. less than a week in and its already spread through the whole substrate and consolidating nicely.

Unfortunately cannot give to many details on it yet but I have put a colonized Ps. Caerulipes cake into a fruiting chamber in the mid to lower 50f after a month of colonization at room temps. Cased with a think layer of verm and into the cold room she goes!

Wish me luck, if it does work I will publish all fruiting parameters for everyone to work with and do a giveaway! Take care in the meantime folks, I'm not sure if he's active on here but LaughingJims on instagram has been absolutely killing it with caerulipes in a greenhouse.

After about a week we've got some surface mycelium poking through the casing. What looks like a tiny pin but I'm not sure it actually is.... we shall see

Latest experiment, PF cakes spawned 1:2 to sphagnum peat moss and rotten wood. Both substrates have 25% vermiculite content. Pasteurized for about 2 hours, went a little longer because the rotten wood was from the Forrest floor.

I quite literally went out into the woods with a bucket and threw a handful of wood in from any log I found in heavy decay (basically dirt). I got a good mix of oak maple beech and likely ash too. Crumbled it all to the texture of coarse vermiculite and pasteurized.

Well both of those tubs got contaminated by a green penicillin mold. Pretty but still sad.

I got my cold chamber up and running again with a few new PF cakes. 50/50 peat verm ph 8 casing. Thicker than normal and keeping it pretty wet after I saw the pics from Rhizo rider and pheno dreamers hunting blue foots.

Also inoculated an all in one style approach to try out. Rotten wood: potting mix: Shredded duff/leaf litter : homemade rye flour 5:2:2:1.

I tried this all in one style bag with caerulipes in the past but used whole grains and fresh wood chips. Ended up burying it out under leaf litter in my yard because it went anaerobic on the bottom.

I used to think they needed colder temps. Now I see they definitely don't. 65-80F perhaps so basically room temp
