So did we decided Cranberry juice DOES have MAOIs?

we have to call it a Thurman though.

It works best with x7x+ mixed with PE, but I HEARD it works with other shroom varieties too!

but the woman who told me that also said you need to say "KISS! MAKE BABIES!" while you rub swabs together to cross two strains.

Citric acid coverts psilocybin to psilocin, and the acidulated water will hold the psilocin for longer, as in it doesn't degrade quite as quickly. That conversion makes it hit faster, since your body starts absorbing the psilocin in the mouth/throat/etc. Basically, it helps bypass primary digestion.

My guess is that cranberry juice's acidity performs the same reaction.

Has an actual chemist ever reviewed this as the mechanism, or is it just urban lore?

I still think it might be making a salt, which I've never heard. Like how they make morphine into morphine sulfate with sulfuric acid, etc. then it's more soluble (and stable to be stored).

Or maybe it's like how they make morphine into heroin (2.2 x stronger by weight) by some voodoo using acetic anhydride?

Is lemon tek to shrooms what heroin is to morphine?

And do you have the same effect from Lemon tek as I've heard, that it makes it stronger but not as long lasting? (mine wasn't soaked in lemon, just squirted lemon into the tea)

(don't shoot drugs, esp shrooms, but for what it's worth, shooting drugs is literally "bypassing primary digestion" (and secondary too)

and heroin is less quickly metabolized by liver than morphine.

I'm looking for some of the stuff I have read about it, will post links here.

edit - Link  "Apparently, others have also found that a dilute acetic acid solution is an excellent solvent for both psilocin and psilocybin. Not only does the solution completely extract both tryptamines but the solution extracts other interfering substances to a lesser degree. Casale also notes that if one heats the extraction solution of dilute acetic acid to 70 degrees centigrade for ten minutes, then the psilocybin is completely converted by dephosphorylation to psilocin.(5)"

So they used acetic acid, but the principle is the same.

My experience is that lemon tek absolutely comes on faster and has a shorter duration. Probably due to the fact your body doesn't have to convert the psilocybin in the stomach.

I have read that using citric acid to make tea also gives a more complete extraction, but that might or might not be true.

Makes sense. I do know that psilocybin is just a more stable prodrug to psilocin, which is the active one in the body.

also, in dried shrooms, psilocybin lasts longer, psilocin can degrade by oxidation, part of why fresh / recently dried shrooms are stronger than long term stored. Longer term stored lose their psilocin more than psilocybin.

Fun fact: psilocybin and psilocin were first extracted, named, identified, and synthesized by Albert Hofmann. Yes, the LSD creator at Sandoz.

I took an entire shoebox harvest of Casper (220g fresh) and made a double decoction tea with citric acid. I then put most of it into jars and froze it. I left 1 qt in the fridge for a bit over 24hrs, it was nice and strong. And it retained the qualities of the fresh fruits, which is my favorite.

Low pH of lemon tek or other acidic extracts like cranberry juice, orange juice, vinegar, etc. co-extracts an acidic phosphatase enzyme from the mushrooms (PsiP) that dephosphorylates psilocybin into psilocin. I’ve been trying to compile sources here:https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/27725108

As for the salt; psilocybin is a zwitterion and psilocin has a high enough pka (8.47) to ensure its protonated into its conjugate acid by regular water. I believe the various salt forms primarily affect psilocins stability with light and oxidation.

I made an extract of a bunch of dried, recently harvested B+ my first year. Used one pass of warm ethanol (Everclear), then one pass of water, strained, mixed and boiled it down a bit, it was strong and a BEAUTIFUL purple.

Within a day it was brown and not as strong too.

Was yours purple? Would be fun to sever from a chalice with a few close friends, right after making it.

Finally. Thank you.

for anyone,
"A zwitterion, also known as inner salt or dipolar ion, is an overall neutral species in which two or more atoms bear opposite formal charges. (Some authors limit the term zwitterion to species in which opposite formal charges are not on adjacent atoms.) For a resonance-stabilized (see resonance theory) species to qualify as a zwitterion, all resonance forms must fit the definition of the zwitterion. The most common zwitterions are standard amino acids."

You may already know, but just to add to this a little as it relates to the earlier conversation; the way Hofmann first identified psilocybin as the active compound was by taste testing/bioessay.

“Heim was able to cultivate the mushrooms in France and sent a 100 g sample of dried Psilocybe mexicana mushrooms for analysis to Albert Hofmann, the natural products chemist at Sandoz Pharmaceuticals who had discovered the effects of LSD in 1943. Animal bioassays were not useful because extracts of the mushrooms had no dramatic effect on the behavior of mice or dogs. Indeed, a subtle head twitch of mice in response to low dose hallucinogens was not characterized until 1967 [3]. Therefore, Hofmann ingested 2.4 g of the dried mushrooms to convince himself that the mushrooms were indeed active. Subsequently, whole extracts of the mushrooms were subjected to preparative paper chromatography to separate the various components. The paper chromatogram was cut into distinct bands that several colleagues volunteered to ingest, and in that way the active fraction was identified.”https://www.nature.com/articles/s41429-020-0311-8

Another interesting thing about that is how suggestible a straight-up world-class scientists can be with his OEV and CEV. He noted this and seemed maybe even a little embarrassed by that.

In his book, LSD — My Problem Child, (PDF attached), Albert Hofmann, did take shrooms to test, after realizing giving it to a mouse wouldn't give useful data, and giving an unknown drug to a human test subject other than himself could be dangerous. (That is a high level of morality in the lab compared to many! Sasha was the same way, though he and Ann did have a small group of friends who'd hang around and volunteer to take new drugs.)

Hofmann was taking Psilocybe mexicana shrooms cultivated from spores brought back from Mexico, and said he had closed-eye hallucinations of aztec motifs.

"Thirty minutes after my taking the mushrooms, the exterior world began to undergo a strange transformation. Everything assumed a Mexican character. As I was perfectly well
aware that my knowledge of the Mexican origin of the mushroom would lead me to imagine only Mexican scenery, I tried deliberately to look on my environment as I knew
it normally. But all voluntary efforts to look at things in their customary forms and colors proved ineffective.

"Whether my eyes were closed or open, I saw only Mexican motifs and colors. When the doctor supervising the experiment bent over me to check my blood pressure, he was transformed into an Aztec priest and I would not have been astonished if he had drawn an obsidian knife.

"In spite of the seriousness of the situation, it amused me to see how the Germanic face of my colleague had acquired a purely Indian expression."

That's incredible: new idea! Test wild cubensis varieties in a double blind experiment from different regions and catalogue visuals from users, see if the visual component matches geographic or biological realities of the original environment.

Double blind? Everyone would fail or do as well as guesses.

I wonder why Hofmann didn't make a point about suggestibility / set/ setting with that comment. Almost sounded like the great scientist was experiencing "magical thinking" and believing it.

Is that how you read it?

Though I also said he did seem maybe embarrassed a little haha.

Also some varieties are actually other varieties renamed by sleazy vendors or people.

Do we really think Mushroom John found "Thai Elephant Dung Strain" in the dung of an elephant outside a monastery in Thailand? Sounds like something made up for internet cred.

Can we please try to stick a little closer to topic for this thread? No shade, but I would like to keep this thread about extraction, potency and preservation methods. Let's leave the interesting stuff in more appropriate threads, if you would be so kind.

I have some labs to run that have been sitting due to travels, house guests, busy work schedule and life in general. Excuses, excuses, I know.

One thing I want to try is testing some of the dehydrated teas to see how they are holding potency. To that end, I will see if I can scrounge up an older tea that I dried, tested and recorded. Then do another potency test to see how it has held up. What I really need to do is make a batch of dehydrated tea specifically for the purpose, homogenize it and then store it under vacuum in glass and retest it at intervals. I am picturing something similar to the myceliated grain vs time potency graph. Ideally it will be very flat and boring, but only time and testing will tell.

Looking forward to results.

I'd be curious how liquid teas hold potency. I don't have the money right now for more tests, car repairs, and not telling you what to do, but that might be a good test.

People have brought it up here and there as a storage method, with and without lemon. (I'd store without lemon, and add lemon when finally drinking of it, if needed.)

My bio assay experience is that they don't hold potency well. A week later maybe 2/3 the day I made them.

I assume that making the tea introduces oxygen that is kept out in whole dried shrooms, degrading the actives.

Tea I made was actually a tincture, B+ shrooms, when I first got here.

I did one pass with hot water, one pass with warm Everclear (ethanol), mixed, got warm on water bath to evaporate a bit.

Was VERY blue, almost purple, looked like magical elixir. (I really wanted to serve to friends in a goblet. haha).

Within a day it was brown. (I know bluing has nothing to do with potency, but loss of both is oxygenation related) and a week later had lost some potency.

Some people make tea and freeze it, I assume that would degrade potency less fast, since chemical reactions happen less in cold.

Hi Rev,

Do you have any initial ideas/anecdotal thoughts on potency/time for the dehydrated tea? I only recently made some out of dried suptropicalis and have found it to be a fantastic method thats very versatile. I was hoping to use it as the main storage method moving forward if it lasts the test of time.

I have tests planned. I was hoping that I had a sample that I had accurately measured and logged to do a retest to check for potency. Unfortunately, I have either used what I had in gummies or just combined various batches into a collection jar, so I don't have a good reference base value to retest.

I am going to prepare a batch of the dehydrated tea this week specifically to test. I will test its potency right after prep and then again a few times over the coming months to see how quickly it drops or if it stay roughly the same over time. So I will share some answers to that, but it will take some time for results to come in.

Sorry I missed this post, Nektar.

That matches my experience as well. On two occasions, I have made teas that seemed to lose potency very quickly. The potency dropped noticeably in under 24 hours and almost completely in a week when stored in the refrigerator. So I just didn't do that any more. I have read that using alcohol and keeping the ratio of alcohol to water above a certain percent helps preserve the actives, but have never tested that.

I have used tea that was frozen for months in gummies and that did work, but I can't say how well because I didn't track the starting potency. Back then, if I didn't have time for a full dehydration cycle before traveling, I would just boil fresh fruits and freeze the tea. I could do that in a hour versus 24 in the dehydrator. But then I would just combine whatever was in the freezer to make a batch of gummies. They were definitely still potent, but I can't say if they would have been more potent if used immediately instead of much later.
