Re: Time isn't fundamental to reality [Re: syncro]
    #29309618 -

Posting where is latest mentioned I see of spiritual amnesia; what is its mark?

Reviewing past threads I found this in Buddhist psychology, Cetasikas, mental forms.

Quote:
25 Beautiful Cetasikas

25.1 Introduction

When we perform dana, observe sıla, apply ourselves to the development of calm
or the development of insight there is kusala citta. Kusala citta is accompanied by
sobhana (beautiful) cetasikas and these assist the citta in performing its task. When
there is kusala citta there is no attachment, aversion or ignorance, one is temporarily
free from defilements. However, after the kusala cittas have fallen away there are
bound to be akusala cittas. There are many more akusala cittas in our life than
kusala cittas.

Kusala citta does not often arise since we have accumulated so many defilements.
Each kusala citta is accompanied by non-attachment (alobha), but this quality
seems to be against our nature. We are absorbed in and infatuated with the objects
we experience through the six doors. We want pleasant objects for ourselves and it
is our nature to think of ourselves in the first place. Akusala is deeply rooted and
so long as latent tendencies have not been eradicated akusala citta is bound to arise
time and again. Even if we try not to be stingy, jealous or proud, these defilements
still arise. There is no self who has authority over the cittas which arise, cittas
are not self. When we experience a beautiful object attachment tends to arise and
when we experience an unpleasant object aversion tends to arise.

...

It may seem to us that a desirable object is the fundamental cause of attachment
and an unpleasant object the fundamental cause of aversion1. However, the real
cause of akusala is not in the object which is experienced. Whether akusala citta
or kusala citta arises, depends on one’s accumulations.
There can be wise attention
or unwise attention to the object, depending on conditions. When there is wise
attention to the object we see the value of kusala and we have confidence in kusala.
However, more often akusala citta arises and then there is unwise attention to
the object.

Accumulations. Therefore take time to practice proactive control of thought; know and accept what you want. Or observe/control the breathing which connects to mind. (speaking to myself as much)

I'm not sure it's included in Buddhist psychology, but mind or awareness itself is said to be 'inherently' pure; attention which is purpose, acceptance. As the mind would rest on a beautiful scene, that which is loved, would be relatively effortless. If we knew the most profound freedom were only available, we'd be all over it. If mind is inherently pure, truly resting it from our makings would be sufficient.

Confidence parallels acceptance. To connect back to topic, the kusalas do not appear with much relevance to time except they are temporary due to accumulations.

Idols are quite specific. But your will is universal, being limit-less. And so it has no form, nor is content for its expression in the terms of form. 4Idols are limits. They are the belief that there are forms that will bring happiness, and that, by limiting, is all at-tained. "It is as if you said, "I have no need of everything. This little thing I want, and it will be as everything to me." And this must fail to satisfy, because it is your will that everything be yours. 'Decide for idols and you ask for loss. Decide for truth and everything is yours.

I was just noticing a useful tool, seeming in the moment, noting particular thought forms as akusala, unwholesome, like fighting inside, and kusala, wholesome.

It's odd that said there is no neutrality, so, either wholesome or unwholesome, at least in ACIM and others.

ACIM seems to imply, as said in reference to past and future, we don't see.

Again though, akusala is not caused by objects, so world and time wouldn't be at fault, but mental habit.

I suppose when in doubt, if not sure something is akusala, why not choose kusala? The seeming neutral which may be close to contentment points to kusala.

Furthermore, why not choose everything as kusala, as proactive? (because we forget) Or the past comes 'round again.

Perception is temporary. ⁷As an attribute of the belief in space and time, it is subject to either fear or love. ⁸Misperceptions produce fear and true perceptions foster love, but neither brings certainty because all perception varies. ⁹That is why it is not knowledge. ¹⁰True perception is the basis for knowledge, but knowing is the affirmation of truth and beyond all perceptions.

Therefore choosing kusala or harmony is right perception though implied temporary. But knowledge is harmonious and timeless. :crankey:

I think it's all one giant kusala. The universe is mental.

That’s very incredible if that’s the case. We are time-created pieces from an eternal sea of existence. How cool is that?!

Very cool.

I think the different ways we can experience time is a pretty big idea and provides new approaches to thinking about life, death, and reality at large. It is a game changer.

With due respect to your enthusiasm, it's not a game changer to me. The idea that time is experienced linearly as sort of a means to an end for anything confined to a single life cycle feels intrinsic.
solarshroomster said:
This last mushroom session I experienced made me appreciate that. After the experience, I always want to linearize when thinking about it in retrospect and can’t do anything but that anyhow… spiritual amnesia. But when I’m “there”, reality operates very differently. Can I ask you a question: doesn’t this amaze you when you experience time differently on psychedelics? What is your takeaway thoughts from that?

Glad you had a good one!
I'd say it consistently amazes me in the moment, then afterwards downgrades to mild interest, then on the whole I just accept it.

Reminds me of one of my favorite statements in ACIM:

Quote:
It takes great learning to understand that all things, events, encounters and circumstances are helpful. ⁶It is only to the extent to which they are helpful that any degree of reality should be accorded them in this world of illusion. ⁷The word “value” can apply to nothing else.

All things, events, encounters, and circumstances are kusala!

Interesting the distinction, the objectivity implied of phenomena, quality, but of mental forms, we can choose. So running in circles, accumulations. Or it seems we can't always choose. When the body ain't good, mind can often follow.

If the power of vision is obscured, mind may not be in service.

This for me can be kind of a battle won for the naturalist as it were, being seemingly so, entirely dependent on the body for mind quality - a bad chemical makeup, injury, sickness, DUKKHA can bring the mind into shadow. But it is quite temporary, and dominion is where sattva is sown.

It's said the body does nothing, an ego's ally, a puppet. Victory and failure cycle like yin and yang. And we say we fly over the authorities. Supposing three bodies, dharma, the mirror of wisdom, then the joy body seeming more taintable, the astral say, then physical. To say none have self is the ocean of sattva, removing our projection of ourselves - we did not create ourselves.

And we say we don't need practice or flame. Again valid if also removing practice of ego.

I cant think of much that is more egoic than thinking or saying "I don't need practice"

It's a big thing, Alan Watts and all, spinvis was heavy in all this but also balanced in his posts. Many sage like teachers old and new say it. But it can't really mean no practice.

You know the gist like they say, trying to grasp, use our volition for truth only obscures it etc. JD Krishnamurti and so on.

There is a big difference between practicing without thinking of it as practice, and thinking "I don't need practice"

Absence is not negation
Altho many try to mentally negate to get to absence

If I steal but mentally say I am not a thief, does that count the same as the absence of stealing?
