Mostly curious about chlorocystis, as I prefer my regular popcorn prep.

Spawned the chlorocystis.

I split the hominy jar, been wanting to try this deep pan substrate idea.




Top layer
Mixed layer
Bottom layer
Perlite reservoir

Top and bottom layers are substrate.  Middle layer is sub mixed with spawn.  Will get a thin casing as it goes into fruiting.

Anyway, pans don't like thick substrates.  But they do like water so maybe they would appreciate a reservoir.  I also found a article on agaricus, where they put grain spawn on top of perlite and cased it, and it was comparable to compost controls.  I don't think that's really economical for button mushrooms, but I figured pans might like it :shrug:

The other half of the hominy jar went in a high spawn four cup container.

The coconut flour was a good find, there might even be tropical species that prefer it over cereal grain flours.

My experiments have some thought behind them, but they're still just fucking around.  Small sample size, to many variables (working with multispore for example).

But I've run a lot of these before, or something closely related.  So, I'm looking at trends over time too.  And if there's a bump, I'll investigate further.

Who knows, maybe your grow will go nuts on the coconut flour, and we'll all spend the next year fucking around with it :lol:

So the vendor LCs I used are ass. Might be that they're classic cubes or just that they're ass, but the Gandalf agar seems to be going pretty hard with it. I know I started out kind of memeing but this is going much better than I thought. I might have to do a side by side now to see cause this is one week on a half pint. Seems pretty quick




Edit: if they come out tasting at all like coconut this is the only way I'll grow from now on

This is an AIO bag made using old subs, wheat and wheat straw.



I suspect there is a fair amount of nutrition left in a substrate after a tub has run it's course.

The tubs the substrate came from were ochraceocentrata that had a couple flushes and then some stragglers before starting to show green.



I broke up the old substrate and rehydrated it to FC. It was kinda fine/thick/heavy feeling so I added some wheat straw to help fluff it back up.

This round is not a good test of residual nutrients, I was also making some wheat grain/wheat straw bags and decided to combine the two projects. So these got a small amount of grain added. But I do think I can get a second use out of my supplies.



I'm gonna noc them with an ochraceocentrata LC if it tests clean.

I started this project after reading Headass's thread. My experience using used substrate

A tale of 5g TTBVI.

I'm well aware that it's many times a standard dose. My tolerance is quite high, I'll usually take 14-20g of cubes for a 7/10 trip.

My first batch of pans were under developed and dried to 1.7g. I ate them all and found them underwhelming, maybe 3/10. I ended up taking 325mg of acid that same night.

My 2nd batch of pans went much better. Grew longer, got bigger, caps were more developed. I figured since 1.7g dry was fine, I'd try 5g dry. I dried them, ground them up and put them into 9 00 capsuls.

I ate them all on a full stomach. Within 20 minutes it felt like every single atom in my body was vibrating. The visuals came on strong, especially in the periphery of my vision. I was nauseous as hell. I carried a bucket with me anytime I stood up. I didn't puke, but I probably should've. This continued for about an hour.

I began to feel off, so I laid down on my bed. After about 30 minutes of that I knew I was in trouble. My entire body was twitching, and I began uncontrolably grinding my head into my mattress. I moved to the floor with a pillow and it all hit me fast. I don't remember much of this part besides begging over and over for it to end and swearing I'd never do it again. I wanted to scream, but my adult son was in the next room over and I didn't want to traumatize him. I knew that there wasn't anything anyone can do short of calling an ambulance and that eventually this would pass.

I tried to text my wife for help, but I couldn't work the buttons. I did however notice that my boss texted me asking me to work the following morning. I have been dealing with some major anxiety at work, and it was causing me to make a lot of stupid mistakes in a safety conscious job. I asked for a couple days off to get my head straight. I barely miss work, and had just worked 9 straight days in a row. The asshole didn't even ask me how I was feeling, just "we're busy, I need you to work tomorrow".

Naturally, I panicked. I managed to get my speech to text working so I could ask my wife to come upstairs.

I spent the next 45 minutes battling with my urge to people please and worrying about pissing my boss off. I paced my room muttering "I'm in so much trouble" "This is so bad". My wife calmed me down enough and I decided to say no.

Afterwards I could tell I was coming down enough to be back in the realm of a normal trip. This was about 5 hours after I took the pans. My wife put on some Lower Decks and sat with me for a few hours while I explained just how much I love the show and all the Star Trek lore behind the jokes. I stayed in that comfortable zone for another 4-5 hours.

All in all, it was about 2 hours of discomfort, 3 hours of panic, and another 5 that were pretty decent.

I think I'll stick to .5-2 grams from now on.

I found a Japanese garden with koi ponds, creeks, water falls, and a huge forest with pathways. I'm planning to do a .5-1g trip there.

That sounds super rad. I gotta find some stuff like that near me. Closest I can think of is a place with a bunch of roaming chickens in a bamboo thicket.

Also sounds a lot like the universe set you up on this one man. Boss messaging about work on your off hours while you're halfway to Jupiter... bad news for sure

Crazy trip report puff!  Do you ever use do not disturb on your phone?  I find it helpful for screening unwanted calls while high :smile:

Some updates on the hominy.  Things recovered slow after the late shake.  MiB bruised black and I spent a couple of days thinking about tossing it.  But it did recover faster than the others, bisporus on the right showing very poor recovery.



But the MiB broke up without much difficulty, and smelled alright.  Maybe a bit off but it could be the hominy.  For science, I spawned it.  And took a lot of photos because even if the hominy is a bust, I think this spawn method might be gold for thin substrate exotics.

These are soup containers.  They're about as tall as a shoebox, but a smaller footprint overall.  And this would work with shoeboxes too.

Container has several small holes for drainage.


Lid has two holes poked through with a hot nail for GE.  The stickers are to keep gnats out.


Pictured is my super bruised spawn, my bottom/mixing container, my base container with holes and a very thin layer of wet perlite for drainage, and my substrate bag.


I added a thin cover of substrate to the perlite.  You can see the perlite still visible in spots.


I dumped my spawn in the bottom tray.


I added two large handfuls of substrate.


I mixed well.


And dumped it on top of my perlite and bottom substrate layer.  I leveled this.  And gently compressed to fill in gaps.  But not like, cube compressed.  Pans need to breathe (and this is the reason for this experiment, air and drainage).


Added a thin top layer of substrate.  Popcorn mostly covered but some still visible.


Rinsed my bottom container, dropped the substrate container in it, and covered with the lid to colonize.


Here you can see I left plenty of room for casing and pins.  I'll update once I add the casing.

So my coconut pfs are near 100%



Been 4 weeks and having not really used pf tek I'm not sure if that's a good pace or bad. They're also looking to ruin my coconut shell fruiting chamber by starting now in the damn jars.




So any of you smarter types know why it would try to fruit before full colonization? I've got guesses but they're just that, so I'd love to hear from the educated

Edit to add: what now? Should I just top fruit it or wait for 100%?
