Unidentified Pan from Oregon (cultivated pics) * 2
    #29207602 -

Fruiting well in the low 70s.  Was told the mycelium doesn't look like cinctulis (I saw the myc but haven't grown cincts myself).  My best guess is olivaceous, and will have them scoped hopefully next week.

I haven't been able to get photos of the original find, but was told they looked like peace river cyans.

Peace river my friend compared the collection photos too.

Unidentified Pan Oregon.  Slight bluing in the pins.

Any prescope thoughts?

They look like pan cinctulus to me.

Yeah, t's hard to tell I guess without scoping it.

Definitely active though.

I will take a cap up to my friend and scope it tomorrow.  Bioassay half a gram Wednesday.  Starting low in case it's an undescribed section cyanescens or something out of range.

Will do!  I also DMed workman, he knew I was planning to grow this out and was curious about it too so.  Hopefully he will chime in with his thoughts and I will add some microscopy pictures tonight or tomorrow morning.

Cool! Panaeolus olivaceus is my guess, especially if no microsclerotia was observed at any point during cultivation. Cinctulus and fimicola tend to form those small blue sclerotia on agar and grain. Fimicola has dark brownish/yellow pleurocystidia (sulphidia) that cinctulus and olivaceus lack.  It is always possible that it is something completely new. I await the microscopy.

Here are some old microscopy images of the potential species that I put together. I really need to update these soon and add the chlorocystis

Appreciate you fam

Here's some more photos, very dark bruising.  Smelled like cyans when I picked some for prints.

I wouldn't expect P. olivaceous to bruise prominently like that, tbh-- is there a reason for us not considering P. bisporus?

Mostly because I've grown a lot of bisporus, both the colville and the San Diego collection.  The mycelium doesn't match, nor does the pin or mature fruit morphology.

But I do think it might be a close relative, in section cyanescens.  Could even be a cyan that showed up in manure. Or something undescribed.  If I trip off half a gram Wednesday, I imagine that will give us a better idea

And of course I will post the scope pictures, it's looking like Tuesday night we will do that.

It does bruise exceptionally dark for olivaceus. A quick microscopic examination to rule out metuloid pleurocystidia would help here. They are large and super easy to see under the microscope.

Another photo dump.

Pins

Abort from misting.

Nearly mature fruits

And these ones I will print this morning, because they are mature.

We thought the closest to workman's keys was bisporus.  But it has not expressed like either of the two strains I have worked with at all, it's much faster. It behaves differently on grain, colonizes more thickly on substrate.  And macroscopically it's not similar at all. So yeah it's very interesting   And likely very strong.

Beautiful grow tree frog. I really love these grass plus shrooms grows. So cool!

I have some shrooms growing outside my door at the moment which I think might be cintcs. I’ll have to make an ID request.

Thanks fam

I was just thinking I need to do these outside this summer.  They're pinning aggressively on phase 2 compost and hemp.  A bit sensitive to over misting so I have had some aborts.

But overall they seem pretty happy in the tent for being first generation from a wild print.

Pinned quickly. I did give them a couple of days to consolidate the substrate before casing, and then a couple of days to colonize the casing before moving them into the tent.

I had a feeling the metuloids would be present with the dark bluing, but I hesitated due to the fact that you are very familiar with bisporus and stated that it was different. But it certainly appears to be bisporus and appears more friendly to cultivation compared to the other versions in circulation. A good find. And there is still a chance it is genetically distinct. Any plans for genetic testing?

Someone on discord thought this is a four spored basidia.  Any thoughts?  I think I will have to scope some caps that haven't dropped spores.

Here's some photos this morning.  Humidity in the tent is around 95%.  Because they were so sensitive to misting I messed with conditions to make sure the caps were getting fogged.

A large specimen from one of the bags topped with grass.

Genetics guy wants more info on the original collection to do the sequencing.  Said his plate is pretty full atm otherwise.

Maybe... but it isn't very clear. But even so, bisporus can have an occasional 4-spored basidium.
