Yeah Taz, that is one of the places I have seen this written. Actually, from the last few posts, I had thought it better to just chunk the shit, I mean mineral water has worked just fine for me so far. Now, I have decided to do a little expirimenting. Gimme a little time and maybe I can tell ya'll if it makes any difference.

If I were you I would bust out the litmus paper and check the PH of that water and see if it needs ajustment before you start. Also have a few control jars to compare to your new find. Good luck and maybe boil the swamp water or presure cook it before you mix it with your substrate. This way it gets cooked twice for good measure. Damn you are dumb LOL peace

Alder, why do you say he's dumb? Were you just kidding, or are you seriously trying to rag on him for experimenting? Shrooms grow like mad around swamps... is it just coincidence?

OK Alder, lets get down to it. I thought this was better left out for boredom sake but here you go: I checked the pH with a digital pH meter when I collected the sample. The pH reading was 5.2. Thats pretty acidic for water....Hence my decision to use 750 mg/L of calcium hydroxide to neutralize the pH. This works our roughly to 3 grams of lime per gallon of water. In addition to this, the pH buffering provided by the lime, flocculates the suspended soilds that are not in colloidial sollution. In doing this, one may pour off the mineral and nutrient rich water, leaving the decayed organic material at the bottom of the boiling pot. The point after all was to mimic mother nature as much as possible with out exposing the mycliuem to competition. The final pH reading of the boiled swamp water was 7.2, just slightly above neutral. The grains used in preparing substrates will always tend to be slightly acidic when cooked, due to their organic composition. So, the pH during colinization will easily have fallen to a just slightly acidic range (6-6.5). This is, I hear, the ideal pH for shrooms. In so far as the silly redneck bit with the 'funky 'ol swamp water', I may be a dumb ass for getting off the beaten path and trying something different. But I ain't stupid... After all this is a hobby not a means of living for me.... have a coke and a smile :-)......Peace

hehehe redneck!
Go for it Rhino...sounds like it might work great. I am all for experimenting. I have did an experiment with one of the contam jars...nothing worth reporting as it all turned to shit. But when it comes down to it...I really didn't waste anything considering it was already contaminate. Just make sure to let us know how it works out. Not that I live anywhere near where I can get swamp water but hey it should be interesting.

swamp water should work great, and all i gotta say is you better be playing some George Clinton and the P-funk while making those jars up.
oh if any one can identify the pics i posted in the thread labeled "who's my dady? pics" i would appreciate it.

I've been gorilla farming "tomatoes" for years, and in one magical spot, i have a pool of artisian spring water. Its ice cold, and is FULL of taddpoles. Anyways, I fed this water to my plants, and I have never seen such awsome results in my life. They grew like trees. The PH was exactly 7. My guess is that this water had fish emultion in it from the taddpoles. Now, I wonder if this water would help my little fungus friends???

The jars were innoculated last night. It should be a few days til they germinate. After that, I will be posting some updates with pics. There are three jars made with the swamp water and three jars made with bottled water. I am conducting this expiriment this for information only, not to sway growers to collect 'natural' water. If it works better, GOOD I'll show that. If it does not work better then, GOOD, I'll show that it didn't. I just wanted to see for myself. Figured I might as well share it with y'all

screw what the pseudo-experts think--natural water is by far the best around. no swamps here but i get my water from a little stream near here and it kicks bottled water's ass majorly. i even toss in a handful of composted manure for extra kick, and grow 10 inch boomers all day long.

Hey TR,
My friend has the compost tea ready to go. Checked the PH with graduated paper and it seems to be around neutral. Will PC tomorrow night and innoc on Friday am. My friend is trying to sway no one, but if this helps then great. One thing that sure couldn't hurt (if it works) is that "lag" time may be reduced if you use some of the same nutrient base when casing. The mycellium won't have the "lag" time as it identifies the new nutrient base. Maybe some more experienced gurus can comment on this theory.
