Too much humidity for unmod tub colonisation?
    #28553581 -

Hey ho!! So after learning TONS from reading other people's questions from this awesome community, here is time for my first!

I've got this unmodified tub that I spawned to bulk to 2 days ago. Underneath that is my automated tub, that I'm familiar with in terms of size/humidity levels. Same substrate in both, my first home made CVG, which was I think slightly on the wet side.

All good and as expected on the automated tub side, but I'm new to the unmodified one's smaller size. I'm a bit worried that it might be too wet, if I slant it I get some water underneath my liner. Keeping the lot at 24C (75F).

I know puddles are bad. Then again it's all pretty clean in there. For now I've just ever so slightly left the lid ajar, good to dehumidify, but bad for contam and CO2 levels.. what a dilemma!!!

Any help would save my ass. And by the way, just wanted to say thanks to all participants here, this is a really vibrant and helpful community! For now I'm just learning from it, but hopefully soon I'll be able to participate more productively

Is that a heat mat I see?
Opening your montub won't introduce contaminatiom and none of us care about co2 levels.

What you been reading?

Also we don't use automated tubs. Maybe you meant modded? Feel free to open the container up and make a picture. Will be easier to judge the conditions

Welcome to the forum!

Just make sure it isn't completely sealed up and is getting some fresh air exchange. If you are getting puddles on the surface, mop them up with some paper towel lightly and give it slightly more fresh air. You want to be careful with swinging the other way and drying it out and having to mist though.

Since your surface isn't even colonized and you can't pay attention to surface moisture, just give some fresh air and leave it alone.

Introducing more fresh air down the road won't give it a higher chance for contamination. Contamination comes from dirty spawn usually, so any time you see a tub that contams out, it was doomed from the start. As mentioned, CO2 levels mean jack shit to us as well.

For your next tub I'd recommend trying EZ Dial for the setup btw. It's the recommended hole set up for modified monotubs and they work better than unmodified IMO.

Ditch the heatpad and flip the lid. Don't over think this stuff.

Hey thanks a bunch Way! I'll follow your advice.

I'm trying many different things at the moment. One of them being the unmodified tub (the one on top), as in no holes and the least care possible. It benefits from the controlled temp of the monotub below (automated), keeping everything at a steady 24C -> ie: the heat pad isn't inside the top tub! Just keeping it as if my room was a this permanent temp.

This is in contrast with my automated monotub below it (controlled temperature and humidity), which has been giving me decent results. But now I want to test the opposite basically

I'm not saying or don't think any of what I do is best practice, just experimenting really.. So yeah, I won't overthink it and leave it as is, with a small airflow coming from the lid kept ajar.

And for my 3rd experiment, I now know what to follow, as in the EZ dial you mentioned. Again, thanks all for making me feel welcome

Thanks man, I think Way answered my questions.

Just testing extremes for now: automated monotub (below, modded and already used), and unmodded simple tub (above, new to me, akin to a dub tub really). I'm sure with experience I'll go for something in the middle as you all say! As in a simple monotub (with airflow) without the fancy automated stuff. That's just the way I like to test things

As for automated monotubs, I didn't know this forum had preferences and no-no's. I don’t mean to annoy anyone trying out something not considered good here, again I just like to test stuff, and found lots of people swearing by them. For sure doesn't mean they're right

Good luck! Nothing against experimentation, I do it all the time. I have a few mini bell peppers inoculated with phoenix, cordy growing on grain with either fat or olive oil and one more on rat food. Really excited about these

Wow now that's experimental! I'd be curious to hear the outcome. You thinking bell pepper fruit might act as a mini incubator/source of nutrient? What would the fat bring to the table?

I went ahead and took a picture as you suggested. Colonisation's looking good, after only 2 days (Jedi mind fuck). What worries me a bit is later down the line, as the stagnant water level has risen. I let air in and tried paper towels as Way suggested but there's just too much.

I ordered a small hose and tomorrow hoping to syphon/suck it out. Ever heard of such a thing ending up successfully?

The standing water outside the liner won't really harm anything. You can tilt the tub on the side and use your hand to hold the sub in place to let it drain if you really want though.

Thanks man, good to know. I remember reading something about pools favouring contam, but now I'm guessing this is only true if in contact with sub..

I'm sure in a few months time I'll laugh at how overly careful I am right now

After you've spawned, you don't really need to worry about the environment causing contamination. A bit of water that doesn't have any nutrients for anything to grow and that isn't even touching the substrate is nothing to worry about.

Yeah, the bell pepper should be sterile inside so at least in that regard, could be better than uncle bens. It would also just be cool to see shrooms grow out of a pepper. I tried many different combinations and so far only orange mini pepper inoculated with phoenix is growing really well. The fat is for oleic acid. I read a paper that compared the levels of cordiceptin when growing on different bugs and it turned out that oleic acid in some of the bugs really made a difference.

Man, the bell pepper thing sounds so cool and organic. I'll give it a go one of these days.

As for oleic acid, isn't that the one present in ants? Which in turn get mind controlled by cordyceps zombi style, or something like that?

Have you given some thoughts to the scenario where you'll be ground zero of the demise of humanity? :lolz0rz::zombie3:

Haha. You can try but don't expect much. I started with 6 mini bell peppers and one big red bell pepper and inoculated them with various gourmet species. The last one standing is currently phoenix in an orange mini bell pepper. Cordy mini bell pepper was interesting as well. While others rotted or succumbed to mold, the cordy one dried up from the inside and now I have perfectly preserved bell pepper skin.

I believe this is the research paper about oleic acid

Once again Im crashing in to promote the EZ dial Mono for noobs and say once again that unmods require more experience.

:whathesaid:

EZDials are much more forgiving of the environments they are used in and truely can be left alone after being spawned until first flush is being harvested.

Yup thanks guys, duly noted, Way already mentioned that at start of this thread and it's definitely on my list of things to try. That being said so far both my mono and unmod colonised fast and strong, less than 2 weeks in, about to go into fruiting. Thanks to the guys above for telling me not to freak out about the extra water! Removed it, all good now.
