It's starting to look like the placebo effect. It's too soon to make a final judgement but I've seen this before with supposedly new plants. At first, you hear wonderful reports and everyone wants to get on the bandwagon. Then the reports start getting mixed and some say it works and some say it doesn't. Then the negatives outnumber the positives and eventually it's considered bunk. Anyone remember banana peels? At one time it was thought you could get high by smoking them. That one goes way back and the rumor restarted a few times. You can get a little buzz by smoking any plant material even paper. If you are convinced it's good stuff you may feel like you had a good experience. It's only after using it for a period of time you realise it's no good. The jury is still out on petunias but it is following the same pattern.

I'm quit experienced with placebo and I know that there was major activity to this plant. But I wouldn't doubt it if many failed to experience the affects. It took me two years of studying colubrina before I could actually get it to work. It took me 1 1/2 years of experimenting with salvia before I could get that to work for me. Call it placebo if you will but I stand behind my experience.

It may be a very subtle effect that not everyone can feel. Salvia splendens is said by some to be psychoactive and many other people feel nothing. Coleus is another one like that. Salvia is anything but placebo. It can knock you on your ass to the point you never want to do it again but I like it. You have a good point about salvia because it can be hard to get off. I didn't get off the first few times either and had to use concentrate to finally get there. Some things seem to have a reverse tollerance so you feel it more after several uses. Do you believe this is the case with shanin? Do you still use it? What effects do you get now?

used salvia DIVINORUM around 230 times now
last night was the first time i did not get off.
this morning was a level 5 again. some call that ego death.
can't explain exactly why the dosage or delivery means that much.

my first few trys with salvia led me to a headache and a foul mouth with my friends. no psychoactivity besides mood swings... then one day i smoke a couple bowls of it and *woo* im doing flips in the spectrum of time.

my opinion is that its just a preperation problem with some... ill be ordereing some shanin my next paycheck to see what i can bring to the situation, as far as experiences.

peace

Theres an extremely large amounts in literature that have said psychoactivity. Many have spoken out to me, and many have not. Some I find to be very effective with me and others are completely absent of affects. It's just how it is. I have yet to brew up another batch of shanin tea, as it is my nature to experiment with many of said herbals and entheogens, I will have to set it as my next priority.

I find some plants to be amazing teachers that others feel are complete crap. I didn't know what to expect with Shanin but I still have much hope for it. Many of the plants I work with and document end up with only 2:10 people actually getting off or succumbing to the effects. I expect several people to find shanin to be a complete bust but maybe a few others will find it to be there Allie. We'll see.

And i'll try to gussle down some more shanin tea just for the sake of science. Glad to see people are still taking interest , from both sides.

I did manage to find out a little bit of info on this plant. It seems to have several names. One of them is Laura Bush Petunia. Yep, shanin is named after the first lady. That might put off a few people I imagine;) Other names for it are

Petunia integrifolia
Petunia inflata
Petunia VIP

I plan to grow it. I may never get off on it but it's an interesting plant and I see several places sell the herb now.

I think I'll go Petunia-hunting tonight...
Lock up your planters!

Also going to go see what the nearest grocery store carries. Tomorrow I'll go to an actual nursery and take a look.

I went to the store with "purple petunias" in mind but I think I came back with the wrong variety. Mine have leaves more heart shaped (chosen because it looked like morning glory) while the ones in pictures are another.

Mine also have a "star" going through them that is a lighter shade of purple.

So will I have to go back and buy new ones?

I have doubts as to their activity. (but we'll see) Wal-mart petunias might be pretty hybridized.

What I find significant is the fact that even the people who got off on shanin are none too eager to try it again. This tells me it's not a very good buzz if it works at all. I have much more hope for my delosperma bosseranum because reports are that people like it and keep using it. That's a subject for another thread. I was going to order some petunia seeds but now I'm not too sure.

There are lots of plants that I have got off on that I dont use repeatedly. Are you saying it has to be addictive to be considered good?

Re: Shanin [Re: Aneglakya]

No not at all. I'm just saying that a good buzz will usually lead the person to want to do it again. As a rule of thumb, if the person says it was good but doesn't want to do it again I figure it was a marginal high at best. Addictive would imply withdrawal problems and might not be a pleasant drug at all. Look at all the people trying to get off of tobacco who are addicted. What are the main qualities of the shanin high? I hear relaxing but what else? What is it comparable to? Is there anyone out there who uses it regularly?

To me, mj is the only one I like to use frequently. I like scelletium now and then and on special occasions I like something trippy like shrooms. Salvia I use mostly medicinally for the benefits to my mood but I don't really like the trip that much. I've been meaning to try kava but haven't gotten around to it yet. It would be nice to find something enjoyable enough that I'd want to use it every day or several times a week. So far, mj is the only one. YMMV.

Hey, Im interested in experimenting with this plant. I saw you mentioned you purchased some plants from Walmart. Is this who you recommend? Do you just ask for petunia violacea, or is there another name for it? Would online be my best bet? Also....the tea, is it nasty tasting, like will I be gagging when I drink the stuff? Thanks alot.

Well we are thinking that the store bought plants may be hybridized and not contain any active ingredients. As far as I know the material that the vendors are selling is not from hybrids but I would check with them first. The material I aquired was from argentina.
