Shanin
    #2707661 - 05/20/04 07:55 PM (13 years, 7 days ago)

In the Highland of Ecuador Shanin , petunia violacea, was utilized as an entheogen. Chemical analysis on this particular species did not detect any alkaloids and the constituents are still unknown. Petunia violacea is in the Solanacea family, the same family as tobacco and datura, but does not contain similiar alkaloids. The Indians of Ecuador report a feeling of Slevitation, soaring through the air, and other hallucinogenic effects. It was traditionally smoked but I was told to drink it as tea. It was recommended to me to try 15 grams but I am starting with 10 grams brewed into tea. I recieved a sample of organically grown Shanin herb from Argentina and am infused into a pleasant tasting tea (with the addition of sugar).

After two glasses I feel very high. No toxic feeling side effects, no nausea, VERY pleasant. I could drink this everynight to unwind.. It's not overwhelming but it is very real, far from placebo. This was suprising that such a common plant like petunia has these type of affects. This stuff is moving so expect to see it offered by your local neighborhood Ethnovendor in the near future.

I recommend against buying petunia at gardencenters because they are likely sprayed with pesticides. It will become available shortly and isn't too expensive so just be patient.

If anyone else has experience with this please do share..

Now if you excuse me I must go enjoy my high.

I used the dried leaves/foliage.

The more into this I get the higher I get. It's excellent. I LOVE IT!! It's VERY effective. It is a very Spiritual Peacefull feeling high. I could see it being used in overcoming addiction and withdrawl. It's so pleasant and peacefull and uplifting. I just went to walmart and bought 24 plants for $6 and I am going to attempt to smoke some of the foliage and flowers. This is so shocking that such a common plant would bring my mind to these places. It feels very enlightening and knowledgable. Not the stupor or idiotic giddy high's I get from the other Herb....

I am very excited to explore this plant further.

Okay. The whole experience lasted about two hours. Towards the end I got really heavy feeling and it was a bit difficult to deal with so I had to just turn off the lights and relax. I was getting irritated for some reason. It was rather abnormal behavior. It slowly worked its way up over two hours peaked at about 1 hour 30 minutes then sunk into a sedated relaxed depression. It was very real I am willing to try it again. I ended it with a very deep , spiritual, and philisophical conversation with myself in the dark.

I tried smoking the dry leaves and got pretty much no effects. It didn't taste too bad though from what I remember. Never did make a tea out of it, but I should get some more and try it that way.

I've been cultivating this plant for years and have read about its psychoactivity. Never tried it though because I haven't heard a detailed report on it until now. I have a feeling the store-bought varieties have been hybridized so much that you may not be able to get a stable or potent plant. The native plant is probably better.

Please keep us informed on the availability

very interesting. I am not familiar with the petunia variant violacea. I have some petunia miliflora in my garden. There doesnt seem to be much information about the violacea variant anywhere, do you know if there used several latin names on this plant?

I thought IAMSHAMAN had it too. There is also another place oversea's selling it now. Ethnoplanet.com or something like that. I will not be suprised if many more start to offer it as well.

I'm not sure if that was entirely because of the petunia or if it had anything to do with my normal psyche. I would say try for yourself and see how you feel..

I am wondering if there is any known toxicity to this plant.. There aren't any positive chemical analysis reported so Tropane and Cyanogenic Glycosides should be out of the question (which are common in nightshades).. but If I am to consume this again I will want to know of any toxicity.

I know this isn't really scientific but it doesn't feel toxic at all. When you consume some plants you can really feel the toxic principals but this is very nice. I was suprised that I didn't get ANY nausea at all.
