50/50+ Mix, simple clarification question.
    #2848383 - 07/01/04 08:08 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

The 50/50+ tek on http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/7977#5050plus says 4% hydrated lime per volume. Then in the ingredient list looks like this
15 1/2 cups vermiculite
15 1/2 cups peat moss
4 1/2 cups crushed oyster shell
1.2 cups of hydrated lime <------- !!!THIS PART!!!
15 cups of distilled water (1 cup short of a gallon of bottled water) 16 cups = 1 gallon

My question is, im using calcium carbonate instead of the hydrated lime, im sure its still 4% by volume, but what is that on the ingredients list. Is it (1, 0.2 of a cup of calcuim carbonate) or does it say (1.2 cups of calcuim corbonate), just wondering... your help will be appreciated.

Usually one uses around 10% calcium carbonate by volume.

Thanks Annon for your short awnser. But the reason i posted that is that is because i wanted an exact ammount in "cups" or some other sort of measurement, it should also prob. be added to that tek - would make it alot easier on tha user.

So if anyone is good at math, what is 10% Calcuim Carbonate by volume, to this recipe in cups or teaspoons or sumthing...

15 1/2 cups vermiculite
15 1/2 cups peat moss
4 1/2 cups crushed oyster shell
15 cups of distilled water (1 cup short of a gallon of bottled water) 16 cups = 1 gallon

The problem lies in that you cannot simply guess how much lime or calcium carbonate to add. You must check the PH and adjust your mix from there.

How did you got ahold of this calcium carbonate?
Is hydraulic lime the same as hydrated lime???

10% of 30 cups is 3 cups. I thought this was something one learns in school.....

With calcium carbonate you can not use too much, since the pH with Calcium carbonate never can go above 8.

No, it is not the same.
"limes which set under water are known as 'hydraulic' limes (formerly they were known as 'water' limes). Their hydraulic characteristic is produced by 'impurities' of silica and clay in the limestone from which they are burnt."

But I assume despite not increasing above 8, the excess calcium could have a negative effect if one were to add more than required? I know calcium is important in the life cycle of mushrooms but that amost sounds like "just add whatever, it won't go too high". There could be negative impacts on mycelium growth (or mushroom formation) with excess calcium levels correct?

(not directed at you anno, I know you know better. But for anyone else reading this thread:)
I say get a vial of PH paper for less than a dollar instead of guesstimating. The recipe could have peat that has an entirely different Ph than the batch I or other people have. You may end up adding too little, or if you don't measure correctly, you could add too much...

I can imagine so. That's why I said: add 10% by volume.

> There could be negative impacts on mycelium growth (or mushroom formation)
> with excess calcium levels correct?

I can only assume so, I have never tried a casing with 30% calcium carbonate or more.
