...i live in southeastern US so there isnt a very large market for humidifiers, if that makes any difference

Check out ebay, but just be careful to make sure you aren't buying "repaired or returned" merchandise. You can always get humidifiers for about 1/2 the price from ebay suppliers, even new and unused models still in the box.

The reptile section of a good pet store should have a small ultrasonic humidifier, but they cost around $40. Very compact, tho.
