I never heard of perlite being used as a casing layer. Use vermiculite, or better yet, coir as your casing layer. As I mentioned, I never heard of perlite being used as a casing layer but I suspect that, since perlite is a silica based material, it may actually take up moisture away from the mycelium. Perlite is normally used to provide a humid environment because of its affinity for water. Such affinity makes possible for gradual and slow evaporation of the water that is soaked within the perlite but the material never comes in direct contact with the mycelium.

I can't envision what you are trying to do from your verbal description. What specific tek are you using or where did those procedures come from?

You should post pics of what you’re trying to do, because what you describe is not how any of us grow mushrooms.

I know everyone wants you to just search the site. But honestly, I’ve been searching the site for months and I have not gotten a just standard answer. I use this terrible spray bottle filled with distilled water. I sprayed the entire bottle on top of my perlite, I took a fully contained grow bag. That was completely done. It was dry though. Not super Duper but pretty dry. It’s been a very hot summer. I spread it out as smooth as I could put about a half inch of perlite on top of it and sprayed this entire bottle on it. The humidity is holding quite well. I can tell that the air is flowing through it quite well. I just want to know in a ballpark sense.  How much water I was supposed to put in this. Because I don’t want to open and close it multiple times and exposed to potential contamination. A gallon? I can include pictures and stuff but I tried making an article and it got completely ignored. Yeah the answer is given in any of these articles I’ve been reading. Everyone just says fucking guess figure it out. Go read!

I have said it before and I will say it again. I need specifics. I can specifically say how big this Tupperware is. I want to know specifically, if I can just boil water, let it get to room temperature have sanitize an entire room and the air in it. Then just go in there and pour the room temperature water in there. How much water is too much. What is the consistency of the soil that I want. Is the perlite supposed to be on top or on the bottom. I am using it as a casing Layer.

Um. …uhh……

Hmmmmmmmm…….

Yeah… I would go back and start with a tek that makes sense and has been a proven method.

If you truly have been using the search function, it’s really easy to understand field capacity for your substrate. If you don’t understand field capacity, use the search function to understand.

The only way to really know is to do it yourself as an experiment.

It’s a little unfair to the community to expect us to read your walls of text without any kind of pictures and expect us to have the answers to a question/instance that has NEVER been mentioned anywhere on this site as far as I’ve been here to put perlite on top of the sub as a casing.

Like Roscoe mentioned… generally it’s a 50/50 mix of c/v.

In a ballpark figure, if you can just dunk your bag/cake overnight or for a min of 2 hours that should help reconstitute the moisture lost during colonization.

Welcome to Shroomery. Time to grow some mushrooms!

I agree with what has aready been said by others ...

The reason you have been searching the site for months on using perlite as a casing layer and not finding anything is because it is not done, no one does that. There are posts going back 20 years where people tried that as an experiment and failed, and a few more recent posts where the advice is not to do it.

I don't know if your substrate can be saved. You can try removing your perlite 'casing', rehydrate the substrate if it is dried out, and it may recover, then proceed as normal.

Personally, I never use a casing layer for cubes, even for PE. It is optional but not necessary.

Your best bet would be to start over using a proper, proven tek. You can do it.

125 posts so far, 2 post to the cultivation thread. The other post is a grow kit(s).
It’s hard to follow.

I am going to blur out the name of the vendor on the grow kit in his other post. It is against the rules to post vendors, and it is not relevent to his questions about using perlite as a casing layer.

This thread has been closed.

Reason:
You have two active threads with the same topic. You keep bouncing back between the two asking the same questions and users keep giving you the same answers. No reason for two threads. I'll lock this one and keep the other one going.

Also, you say you have been searching the website for months and not finding what you are looking for. I suspect you may be just scrolling through thousands of posts hoping to find something pertinent. I want to point out we have an excellent search engine here. Look at the top of the page and you will see a link 'Search Posts'. Use that. It is very intuitive, you just fill in the blanks. You will find relevent search results in just minutes rather than months.
