what i am doing wrong? perlite...
    #561825 - 02/24/02 08:37 PM (15 years, 4 months ago)

i just switched over to perlite this afternoon after some strong suggestions from users here. i used a very damp layer covered by a dry one. i have no condensation on my chamber walls at all. it has been sitting a few hours. i don't have a humidity gauge because i cant afford one right now. my lid is a piece of clear plastic vinyl (shower curtain) with a wood frame. i switched humidification techniques from a spray shield because my cakes were bluing. i am paranoid now that i am still not getting the moisture that i need. people talk about keeping the water level X number of inches below the top of the perlite. looking in on the side of the aquarium i dont see any definable water level. any help is much appreciated, thanks in advance. zodiac

a friend of mine recently made a terr. with perlite and he does not see any signs of humidity in the terr also. there is a slight amount of condensation just above the perlite layer on the wall, but his hygromometer (sp?) reads HI (over 95%) so it should all be good......much less sign of humidity than from a cool mist or ultra-sonic but i guess it works....or we will soon find out.

Don't worry about damp layer/dry layer. Some do but i don't know why. I have always just made my perlite moist by putting it in a collander, wetting it in the sink, and shaking out the excess water. Perlite is very contamn resistant. It will also take a while for the perlite to start releasing the tiny water particles into the air with enough concentration to see condensation. More than one day. So just be patient. You can just spray your perlite with more water if you feel it is too dry.

High,

As newbie I am trying with a layer wet perlite in the bottom of my terrarium, it works okee.

I even crushed the perlite and added it to my casing mix. I don't know how this will end, I just could not find the other stuff that is needed.

Hoping that it goes well, it looks like it...

remove the dry layer on top of the damp layer-works better for me-then i sit my cakes strait on little squares of foil on my damp perlite-my walls are sweating nicely--

EEEEEASY fix.
add more water until the perlite is wet. dry anything cant release moisture it doesnt have. water level in perlite should be at least halfway up if not more. add water; use your spray bottle to mist the sides of the terrarium and close it up. your humidity will be up to 95 within 10 to 15 min if you mist the walls also.

as i stated, i can't see any kind of definable water level. maybe it is just the aquarium i am using or something. but when i first put it in, i kept adding water looking for a level and the stuff ended up floating, which i hear is not good. so i emptied it out and strained the excess water, then put a damp layer down, then a dry one. i guess the concensus is that i dont need the dry layer so i will probably make it damp as well. i put my spray shield back in and have been hand spraying also and it seems to be nice and moist in there.
