Peruvian Torch covered with webbing
    #2825771 -

No picture, sorry. Might that be from spider mites? What is the best treatment?

TIA

I have found that usually these are just plain old little spiders and they are good. If you do need a good organic insecticide try boiling tobacco leaves in water and misting the solution onto the plant. Nicotine is a great insecticide that washes off in water easily. It will kill any pest (including people that consume it regularly).

spider mites don't usually bother cacti...
but my mealybug poison works well against them (be sure they're not spiders):

the recipe is this:
5ml ~50% malathion
5ml dishsoap
40ml alcohol/methanol
fill the rest with water until you have one liter.

then spray the infected plants and vase/surroundings...

when it comes to mealy bugs or mites one has to use tough warefare - a tiny quantity of malathion is so much more effective than a layer of nicotine on your plant...
but it works well for certain pests.

what exactly is malathion? i ask because i currently have a garden where spidermites are reigning supreme. they destroying my tomatoe plants along with my peppers and poppy seedling patch. is malathin organic? i don't like using chemical pesticides on my garden...it just doesn't seem right.

well, first off, malathion is 'as chemical as' nicotine, because it's made of chemical elements, just like yourself and me.
i know you mean you don't want heavy artificial poisons on your plants but in my recipes concentrations it should be pretty safe for 'plants that are to be consumed', just not in a short run (cacti, for a good example!)...
sincerely? your tomatoes and poppies might thank you.

Nicotine is one of the most toxic poisons known and it works as well as malathion. Getting hold of a few tobacco leaves is easy in a farming community. Organic methods are proven. Read this if you think malathion is safe. It is highly dangerous to use on consumables.

i used to buy a pack of marlboros when i needed nicotine for my plants, worked well for turtle cochineal suckers, no need to go to a tobacco plantation...
but i cannot agree that nicotine is as efective as malathion. i'd like to see you save a mealybug infested cactus greenhouse with nicotine...
on the malathion link - sure it's bad but on the prescribed dilution it's easily washed away by any rain that you plant comes to pick and it isn't really a nuke, it's just an effective combination of ingredients, designed against mealybugs but that works for other plagues too...

The problem if it is an outdoor crop is the malathion washing into nearby creeks. If you think this little bit won't hurt then consider everyone also thinks that and the effect is cumulative. Unless an infestation has gotten way bad it is best to stick with organics as they are milder on the environment...though there is a time and place for stronger measures, having a few webs on your cactus ain't it.

Doesn't malathion break down after a certain amount of time?

"In trying to calm the fears of Tampa residents, representatives for the Florida Department of Agriculture have made public statements that after application, malathion "breaks-down" in a matter of hours. What they don't tell you is that malathion can actually break-down into compounds which are more poisonous than the malathion itself."

During a northern California fruit fly infestation around 1980, I was riding my bicycle early in the morning and was completely doused in malathion from a helicopter. Joy of joys!

Back to my webbing - is it the consensus that I have nothing to worry about or should I treat it?

Don't take this the wrong way, but that sounded very funny. But don't worry...I think malathion breaks down. You got nothing to worry about here. I think spiders (and spider mites) like peruvianis because you can weave good webs around the long spines.

i'd say you're okay. pretty much the same thing is happening to my peruvianus and it doesn't seen to be causing any harm. i just run my finger down each ribjoint (i guess that's what you'd call it) to remove it.
