San Pedro - Growing for maximum potency
    #2814455 -

I've read that watering your cacti less will aid in alkaloid production - anybody have some tips for blow-you-away pedros?

I dont believe that watering thing... sure it'll be "less" potent, simply cause the water weighs more, but I've always been in the line of thinking that if you want more magic, more surface area is k3y.

Folar feeding is probably the best idea short of the old idea of adding precursors and DMSO

no the starving of water makes sense..you have to think about mescaline's role in the wild....the cactus uses the mescaline to ward off would be consumers...in times of drought this is even more necissary I would think since things that would eat the cactus are going to be looking even harder to find sources of food and water so the cactus ups it's protection....makes sense to me anyway, though I'm sure someone could explain it a little better.

I read somewhere that mescaline is a long term storage chemical, that levels are highest at the end of summer.I always harvest san pedro right before the fall rains.Once water hits it then mescaline levels drop as it's converted to more active chemicals.
I've done extractions on end of summer cacti and active growing cacti and you only get traces from growing cacti.
Around here they grow over the tops of houses.I can pick dozens of trunk sized arms in minutes.

i read in a book about not watering the cactus and then injecting dopamine into the roots will increase mescaline production. RussCan's post sounds like a good natural explanation for the watering thing though.

Foliar feeding,      !!!  Makes 'em dark green/blue !

:syringe:INJECT :syringe: with l-dopa or other precursors?  I honestly don't know if it's been proven to increase mesc. levels...  It's more involved than I want to get into...

My tip:  Treat them with loving kindness :sun:  :sun:  :sun: during their growing season, plenty of sun, water, and regular feeding.  Don't starve them, let 'em get plump & juicy!  Stop watering during the Fall season, and keep them dry & bright during the cool months of the year.  Cold is OK, as long as the tips don't freeze.  At the end of winter, harvest.  This is when alkaloids will be at their highest (based on Web research).  To harvest:  cut, then place in a dark, dry place for 2 to 4 weeks.  This also increases alk. levels.  Then process by whatever method you choose:  pressure-cooker syrup, dried chips, tea(ugh!), A/B extraction, etc.

Be sure you remove the growing tip for re-planting.  Should be at least 3 inches in length.  1 foot tip cuttings re-grow the fastest, but I usually start mine between 3.5 and 4 inches, and process the rest.  Let the cut on the growing tip callous for at least a week (2 weeks is better, IMO).  If you can't re-plant right away, pedro cuttings will keep for months.  I've planted some that were cut 3 months earlier.

Peace & Pleasant Experiences to you all,

YourHighness

I've heard these stories for years about injecting dopamine or other chemicals but never knew anyone who actually made it work and kept doing it. Where the heck would you get dopamine or any precursors anyway? How do you inject into a cactus? They are already full and there is no empty space to squirt something into. IMO, anything you inject will mostly come right back out. Seems to me that if this worked there would be someone by now giving a pictorial and bragging about how potent his pedros are. I suspect it's an urban legend. I'd be happy to be proven wrong

You're supposed to use DMSO. DMSO carries it into the plant.

People have done it (ion), but frankly it still takes time to proccess the precursors.
