They don't rust, AND the one piece system keeps fingers further away from the edge when opening. To me that is the biggest advantage, with rust-proof being second.

There are some with silicone gaskets, and some without. One kind has a lip that holds the gasket in place. I had just bought a lot of new lids without gaskets and then saw those nice ones on here, so I wish I had ordered those.

As it is, mine are working just fine. I did start wrapping the edge of the lid with cling wrap to minimize AE. I'm running a single 1/8th inch hole per lid, stuffed with polyfill. Even with minimal AE I seem to lose a lot of moisture in my grain by the time everything is colonized. It's probably my grain prep, or really dry conditions...

Edit: BTW, I use plastic lids for my agar jars as well. (1/2 pint wide mouth) No gasket, non-modified, just wrapped with cling wrap the same way a plate is wrapped. I have been waiting to wrap my "plates" until the condensation dissipates. Some of the pre-pour plates come out with more condensation than others, so I just check them every 5 days or so.

I’m having really high contamination rates, and it’s been suggested that the 2 piece metal lids could be part of the problem. Plastic lids are a single piece and keep your fingers off the glass. Yes they have a silicone gasket.

Mine are drilled and I’m installing SFDs today here in a bit!

Next PC cycle I’ll try them out and report back.


I use plastic lids with both SFDs that come with 3m adhesive and SFDs I cut myself and used rtv silicone. I prefer the self adhesive. So far they work great. The RTV mostly held up through multiple cycles and runs through the dishwasher so far. The ones that failed were due to me doing a bad job with the silicone. The self stick have held through one cycle so far, but are so much easier I hope to never go back.

So this is probably gunna seem super dumb because I definitely feel dumb for not realizing this would happen....

I put some LCs I had made to plates to check for contams.... they are clean🙌👏

After they grew a bit I put them in the fridge because I didn't plan on using them ATM. Reason being that I'm terrified of opening my jars/bags to actually use the agar to inoculate. I'm doing everything in a sab but I just can't get past the fear of opening something after it's sterilized for some reason😅🤦🏼♀️🤷♀️

Anywho... they have been in the fridge for probably a month ish now and I hadn't much messed with them since I put them in there until about a week ago when I took them out to show someone and realized that the agar is rapidly disappearing.. which after about a half a second of thought I realized DUH YA IDIOT ITS GETTING EATEN...

Well so now I just took them back out and there might be 2mm depth of agar in the plates at the deepest point and I'm like.. well fuck... if I don't use it I'm gunna lose it? Right? So moral of the story is.. I'd there a way to keep it from completely disappearing so i can save them for a later date maybe like when I'm not gunna have major anxiety over opening the already sterile jars/bags? Or some advice as to what to do with it now? Or maybe just some reassurance that it won't forsure contaminate if I open things and knock them up with the agar?.... something? Anything? Throw me a bone here?!? 😂😂😫😵💫😅

sounds like your agar plates are slowly dehydrating

you might pour them thicker if you insist on using plates for the fridge

also wrapping them extra with cling will help them keep their moisture longer

or of course you could make a slant, the standard for long term storage. These will not dry out in this way if prepared and stored correctly

all the fear of opening a container stuff... You could talk to somebody professional. Or just get over it and get to work and you will soon gain confidence working under sterile conditions friend. Nobody can assure you that you will not contaminate your work

True story I guess. I mean I'm gunna do it because it's a waste not to do it and it's a waste if it contams, so either way. I guess then my follow up question becomes (don't shoot me for asking something I know I could find if I really looked I'm sure) so if the plate has dried ] like that and the myc isn't super strong on it because I didn't really know what I was doing and just kinda dropped a few drops of the lc all over the plate how much of the plate should I put in a quart jar of grains? And do i just leave it to sit on top or do i shake the jar to get it broken up and mixed into the grains? Also, How much in a pint of lc? I can put a wedge in a Jar of lc and grow it out right? Lol, sorry just a girl trying to figure it out and probably thinking way to hard about things that are not the things I should be thinking so hard about 😅🤷♀️

No problems, loads of people here are super willing to help, even if its the millionth time we've had the question.

Post a picture of your plate though, it'll be much easier to give good advice that way.

Becausewhynot, you will want to take some transfers from that germ plate that has been sitting to fresh plates. If it's really dried up, you might just want to start over from spore, and then stay on schedule. The new transfers should recover and grow out normally, you would want to determine the cleanest looking cultures, and then take those to grain.

If your grain bags have been sitting this whole time as well, they might be too dry to colonize well.

Hold off on liquid culture for now. If you aren't comfortable opening a grain bag then you have no business attempting LCs yet.

Did you start with a spore syringe or a liquid culture syringe? A spore syringe is more important to transfer away from. If it was a true LC syringe, it's still recommended to take transfers from the leading edge of growth, but try to leave behind where the initial mycelium was placed and grew from.

Ok, I re read your original question post Becausewhynot. You said it was from an LC you made and claim it's clean. Assuming it is, the least exposed way to noc a jar would  be squirting some LC into a slightly cracked lid. Takes 2 seconds and it's closed again. Don't worry about using the agar, that was only to verify the LC was clean. And don't stress over it contaminating, it happens and if it doesn't, then you succeeded on both inoculation and getting over some anxiety to boot.

Go and do it and report back when you see something growing in the jars.

Sorry, I had missed that vital point! Bajazly is absolutely correct, you don't even need to use that colonized agar. Just use the LC that you tested. 1 to 2 mLs, (CCs), per quart jar is enough. Maybe a little bit more for a large grain bag.

I went from Spore syringe and knocked up the culture broth (lme and a little maple syrup and nutritional yeast). I used three different strains(gt,huatla, and pe Hawaiian) and did two pint jars each. All of my jars have ships on them (grain and lc). One of the huatla jars contaminated (actually what happened to that jar is crazy b4cause I just left it for the last two months abouts and the liquid is crystal clear but there is a huge mass at the bottom that is super cloudy and Def contamin but there is a myc mat about a cm thick completely covering the liquid and growing up the sides of the jar and around on to the lid. It's bonkers).

I put the rest of them to grain in pre done milo bags and one wheat berry/millet bag. The milo ones didn't grow basically at all. I think because they are basically dry. The mixed one (gt strain put on it) did beautifully and I put it to bulk and it was doing great the first few days then I had a temperature glitch and all the condensation on the walls of the tub condensed and fell and two days later I had a four inch layer of mold in both totes. Super sad shit.

So now I just made my own quart grain jars with a wheat berry/millet mix (14 of them to knock up with the lc i have and/or the agar that is rapidly vanishing) and made new pints of culture liquid to knock up with the new strains I got (18 pint jars and 5 new strains in mss). And ten agar plates (to check the cultures and knock up with 1 more strain that i got as a swab.) I know I sound fucking ridiculous. Go big or go home right?

Which also leads me to the question... do I just rub the swab like all over the plate or just in one spot or do I cut off the tip of the swap and drop it on the plate? Do I have this thing going right so far? Those first 3 strains in mss were my first contact with any of this 😅

I haven't used many swabs yet but I zigzag them on a few plates then stab them right into the third or fourth one and leave her there

the zigzag plates germ maybe only 50% of the plates with very few colonies, easy to isolate. The stabbed one explodes with growth all centered around the swab and harder to decipher. If the swab is clean this is no problem but dirtier swabs may prove to be some challenge, which is multiplied if you have condensation rolling around the plate, carrying the bad bacteria everywhere

Grain prep is crucial because the hydration can easily be too low or too much. I recently prepped a batch of wild bird seed that came out too dry, so it's easy to do.

I was playing around with it yesterday under the microscope with an old plate and it worked very well visually. I was using an 18 ga needle, not the 22 ga Josex recommends so that may work even better.
