Thanks. Yeah, high temperatures and drought were my primary concerns, especially regarding the more temperate cold-reliant species. I’ve got some pretty densely wooded, shady areas that stay somewhat damp in the undergrowth, even in the heat of the summers, which I think would have the best chances of providing a suitable habitat for some caerulescens, if I can get a bed established.

But I definitely will be trying smaller container grows of them all first to help maintain conditions as best I can….provide an ability to move things around as needed.

I appreciate the tips!

I don’t really know that high temps are really too much to be concerned about.  We get days over 100° many days in thw 80s-90s and months of humidity below 40%.  But they just seem to hibernate during those times.  It’s the 40s-60s with very high humidity that really makes them shine, if we get high humidity above those temps they get beat on by gnats and springtails, it may be different in different places with high humidity at higher temps and different macro organisms and other potential pathogens.  They do fine in vitro at higher temps and high humidity, but once they’re in high temps with moisture in the elements they get stressed by pests.  At least here for me.  I think it’s in them to live and thrive in other climates, especially with a little help.  But we won’t really know until more people move them and cultivate them in more diverse places.  Then again, all the living things in your location may recognize them as a completely foreign being and just kill them.  Either way, I find them incredibly entertaining.

Thanks Trout! That sounds promising then, at least potentially. I’ve got some subaeruginosa on the way too. I’m not very familiar with the climatic conditions of their native habitat, but I presume NZ or Aus may indicate an ability to survive in a sub-tropical setting.

I know Aus is huge and geographically diverse, and there are massive elevation differences in parts of NZ that could mean I’m way off base with my assumptions. But I’m willing to try it out.

In any case, I plan to document all my efforts and report back on any anecdotal findings. A sample size of one doesn’t mean much: a total failure could mean I’m just bad at cultivating them, and not necessarily that they can’t make it here. And equally, if i get some established, it could mean I just got lucky with a particularly adaptive culture, and the shaded overgrowth at the edge of my yard just happens to work out okay, and isn’t indicative of the success others may or may not have. But maybe it’ll encourage others in the region to give them a go.

As you note, with shared efforts its more possible explore the limits of what these organisms can handle outdoors if given a little help. I’ll certainly be here asking tons of questions and letting you know what I find along the way.

That’s a very interesting thread for me to get into, thanks for pointing it out.

I’m basically at sea level here, and definitely not on a volcanic mountain side at 5,000-10,000 feet. But if they can do it there, then that’s just more the reason for me to give it a go.

We get plenty of 40 degree F days and nights from Oct-March, with very high year-round humidity even if we have extended periods between rains, so with a little babysitting I’m thinking I’ve got a decent shot at some fall/winter fruits next year.

Well, this thread is coming into the season of people asking about agar recipes, and what kind of fruiting chambers people use, and why grow cubes at all if azzies are so much stronger.  But hang in there, the whole process is may more of a ride than any other mushroom I can think of. 
Super excited about this patch y’all!  These cyans showed up here all on their own, I planted allenii in the area and spread chips around expecting the lenies to take over and was watching the chips colonize with white myc through the season, but then these wavy caps started popping up, and there’s a semi distinct margin where one colony starts and one stops, but these cyans are blasting through the chips, and flanking the allenii.  So I either brought them in on the chips, or boots, or an animals moved it from other patches, or from spores from my other patches, or it’s just there living in the soil waiting for the right food and conditions.  Either way, I will try my dambdest to get prints out to folks.

I think they have a little different appearance than the one I’ve fruited here, and are much more aggresive, so I’m leaning more on them being wild.

Think i will pick up another one time my beds and thats will be with cyanescens for this season. There is zero rain whole September and October not good for them but at last i pick up something. Rains finally start before 2 weeks but they slowed and season looks like will end. Have 40 grams dry for long winter. Im happy they are crazy strong. Start more spores in agar from member here and already have few jars with cyanes, azures and subaeruginosa. Next year will see.

Honestly, I find cyans to be consistently more potent and higher yielders.  The high is preferable as well.

I think azzies got so popular thanks to their hype man.  You know who I mean.

Yes, had this same convo yesterday.  Strange the only test that showed they were the stronger is published by the guy who described and named his son after them
Why people who don’t have the experience with them ask the question, attempt a tub grow never pull it off and disappear

I’d say if kept irrigated could do well.  Shitty thing is fruiting in higher temps.  Might have bug problems
