They’re great for me because they’re lower maintenance and can be done in a different grow area. i prefer bulk 1000% to the bastard SGFC but lower maintenance than a water tub? ime both are pretty set and forget. i havent done either in a while.."i dont always do PF, but when i do i fill a jar halfway and fruit it invitro". If I have 40 cakes and a water tub big enough for 24, I gotta do something with the other 16. nah homie you can stack em, they love it. unless you have the skinny half pints, that might get wobbly. Full water tub, full cabinet - I’m a happy guy.

I do have the skinny half pints :smile:

I agree they’re probably very similar in yield. Probably negligible difference if any. My cakes are great performers, and so are my tubs.

Soon all my cakes will be in the water tub, though. I’m moving from PF to grain spawn. I’ll still keep some going for fun, but yeah. The PF dynasty in my home is coming to an end.

I'm glad you mentioned this. I heard that bacterial spawn is fairly common with spore syringes and that PF tek does well with that because of the lower nutrient load plus the hydration level. That is my current understanding. I'll make sure to get some pics of the fully colonized cakes up.

I also like the stacking idea. I've seen that in threads and it worked great. I used the wide 1/2 pints so it should be more stable.

there is something special about brf that limits bacteria, probably the way it absorbs liquid, but it also has to do with the lack of disturbance. shaking grain jars hurts the mycelium and gives bacteria the edge. thats why you dont want to shred bacterial cakes; they will have a better chance if you leave the myc alone

Still going with the dual approach if enough of these cakes supports it. I dunno if its too early to tell yet or I'm just not familiar enough, but I think some bacterial sections are becoming evident. Still no signs of game over contam tho. I'll take and append some more pics in the OP.

Morning just started in mush hut. Examining overnight development. Really consistent and now accelerating growth. I notice the areas i suspected to be bacterial all have rhizo growth so now I'm really not sure. Still no major issues, looks nice. I see a few extra thick areas of tomentose.

It looks like during the sterilization or afterward the substrate compacted and some dry verm fell down into that gap. I think that is actually what is going on in some of the portions that were bothering me visually. It's really insane waiting through colonization with no real life benchmark to go by. So many threads have their pics broken or they are like 640x480 flip phone. Not complaining, there are amazing pictorials on here too, especially in the teks.

I'm pretty sure now that is just some dry verm that subsided after the cake began to consolidate the substrate. If that is the case, some of these cakes should be getting close. I'm beginning to notice some creamy white thicker myc sticking to the glass in a few spots.

Birthed 4 JMF cakes and 3 GTs. Have 3 more GT jars that got shorted on MS mL's almost colonized. I can't stress enough how much I'm using a larger granule for the top verm layer for all further PF. The fine verm ended up leeching moisture from the cake and absorbing the condensation. The mycelium had even colonized up to the top and across the dry verm layer!!! The stuff was a pain in the ass to wash off too and I left some because I didn't want to handle the cake excessively. The fine was very good for the actual cake substrate, though.

Dunk and roll complete. Need to trim some foil and wait a little for the verm to set up before misting. Some of the mycelium colonized parts of the dry verm layer due to ambient moisture. There was no visible contam in any of the jars and they all smelled super proper with no off odors.

Knotty little cakes doing their thing. All cakes are colonizing into their verm psudo-casing (not sure of actual term). Average is 30% coverage already. Misting as needed to maintain surface conditions. So far 3 mists daily has been doing well. I suspect as fruits ramp up I'll need to revisit this once they get to the rapid fruit growth phase. Anyways, this grow is going 100x better than my first. Some of these cakes are particularly vigorous. Cannot wait to see what cloning material comes.



Thinking about trying bottom watering on a cake and seeing how that goes? Is my grow seeming on target?

Status update. Pinsets are progressing. All but one cake are showing pins. Several have some really nice clusters forming. I'm very excited and encouraged by the progress.

Everything seems to be going on target. The laggard cakes are beginning to show good signs. The GT cakes got less MS solution than the JMF ones. I think those jars would have benefited from some extra consolidation time.
Still have 3 more jars to birth, they appear ready but I'm going to give them extra time to consolidate their strength and vigor.
Current misting protocol is approx 6ML across all cakes every 6 hours, with a bias toward the heavily fruiting ones. I suspect I will need to ramp this up at one point or another.

Hey, I see it now! That is so rad, thank you! It's really good to hear from another new mycologist.

I checked out some of your threads. I see you dove straight into everything like I did. I've spent hundreds of hours reading mycology related threads, papers, watching videos, and discussing with anyone who will listen!

I've got everything on deck to get spore and clone material from these fruiting cakes. Between petris, souffle cups and gladware, I have plenty of kit for working cultures. I'm still learning implementation as I go, to a large extent, but feel that I've got a solid grasp of the process.

Definitely looking forward to seeing how your next grow turns out. I know I'm new too, but please don't hesitate to ask if I can be of assistance.
