JMF / GT PFtek: Round 2!! * 1

Greetings mates! Time to start my 2nd ever attempt. My first attempt went pretty well for flying blind. First Grow Thread
A friend had filter patch growbags and spores from some website. They didn't know what to do and aren't very DIY so they basically handed over what they had and wished me luck. I had quite a few parameters out of band, especially in the beginning, before I found these forums. Anyway, you guys got me sorted and on track. Ended up with over a half-oz dried. I've always been fascinated by Fungi and really REALLY enjoy doing this. So, armed with new knowledge and better equipment, we continue!

8/16: Made a standard PF Tek recipe with 1tbsp gypsum per 5 jars. Fashioned innoc holes. Filled, lidded, covered with foil and placed into 8qt instant pot for 90minutes.

8/17: After sanitizing my SAB and surrounding area, floor and airmass, bathing and using as much PPE as possible I've knocked up 10 1/2pint wides. I had a limited amount of spores remaining, so each jar only got about .7ML. This doesn't seem to have mattered at all. I opted to go with 3 holes in a triangular pattern for the lids.

8/20: Tomentose growth occurring in all jars. No sign of contam! Come on my little buddies you are doing great! Colonizing on a shelf in a room that cyclically fluctuates from about 68-75F daily.


8/22 I noticed it actually looks like the PC cycle subsided the substrate a bit. I had the dry verm and substrate non-packed but flush with the top and now it seems to between 1/2-1/4 inches down. I don't think its an issue as its ripping through the substrate just fine and I can see that its not jam packed into the jar. I probably could have tamped slightly. Live and learn. I'm just hoping that when inspecting or taking photos I didn't expose the nutrient substrate to the environment. So far so good, lets hope for no nasty surprises!!



8/24 CAPTAIN RHIZOMORPH HAS ARRIVED!!!! lol those jars aren't actually flipped over!!!



8/28 Various mycelium types are developing. Beginning to see condensate or perhaps clear metabolite. I believe some areas appear bacterial. I aimed for .7ml, but never under. I think that certainly explains part of the difference in colonization rate. Last jar only got one inoculation hole filled, for example. "Time will tell." as they say in this game.

Adding some pictures today in the main post. Seems to be doing lovely! I got my SGFC sanitary and ready to be hydrated. I'm still considering busting these cakes down (cheese grater?) to be used as spawn in one of the great BRF conversion threads available. Search engine, you are my God!

I'd love to discuss this possibility.

I didn't have my bearings last grow but I am prepared now to collect fruits with performance/visual traits I like and put to agar for eventual isolation.

I'm also out of spore syringe so it would probably be wise to make a few prints as well? If my isolations don't seem to be performing well, I'm assuming I'd need new spore material to get other traits.

its never a bad idea to take spore prints

try not to tilt your jars when you pick them up. disturbing the verm layer can move contams through to the brf

i dont recommend grating up cakes...theres just not much upside. you get the same yield, with more work

brf settling a bit is totally normal, you didnt do anything wrong

Definitely a skill I'd like.

I think I'll keep it simple and dunk and roll the cakes like you suggest. I have time right now to keep on top of a SGFC until the cakes are dialed.

That's how I understand it to be too, but these aren't yet. My wife thinks we didn't tilt any of them. I can't remember. I've noticed a great trend of stoners and drunkards at this hobby so I think this totally tracks! I meticulously log data points, but forget things like that so fast!

I'm definitely going to check out the water tub. I kinda jumped out ahead on making the SGFC but I needed to get those first cakes into something and I settled on that without having a complete picture of available teks and situations.

I was eyeing pasty's ez dial monos as a future tek. Although I really like the idea of SFF growing, especially when pheno hunting. I also thought Dawgybags sounded real good for that too. It looks to me like that could help keep costs manageable and allow more simultaneous projects.

Personally I disagree, ive had wonderful results from grated cakes birthed to bulk. It might not be for everyone but id suggest giving it a try at least if you have some extra cakes to play with. I personally think its a great way to transition to bulk growing. :2cents:

I second shredding your cakes. I’ve had great results. And I definitely recommend it for no other reason than I’d have no room in my grow space if all the cakes I made were in my water tub. I have to shred some, otherwise I don’t have room.

Maybe I'll birth some to bulk and some dunk and roll? That would let me do a little mini head 2 head! I've noticed others running multiple versions of a tek or doing comparisons like this. Also, I feel like I have not much to lose, but a lot to gain by learning as many techniques as possible. I'll dig into BRF cake 2 Bulk teks. Do you guys have a preferred one or any MUST KNOW tips?

Cheese graters are nice to have. Like a medium cheese grater. I just do 4 cakes to 2 quarts coir. Works a charm!

I havent done a comprehensive study or comparison but I'd say just from my anecdotal experience, yes, I think you tend to get a slightly better yield. The main benefit imo is to gain experience with bulk.

If I decide to run half in bulk that could be an interesting data point. I don't see how it could be anything but anecdotal in my case either, because of starting with multispore. Plus, I don't have the same amount of JMF and GT jars. Realistically, I will have some badly/non fruiting genetics or other flaws mixed in there that would be a huge uncontrolled variable, right? I feel like for a real comparison of just cake vs bulk I should be using an isolated phenotype for realistic results. Does this sound logical or am I flashing my noob card?

I'm still leaning towards running both teks for learning curve and experience reasons. I'm a pretty kinesthetic learner, so doing helps things click into place for me immensely. For example, I did a few dry dummy runs with my SAB before actually proceeding with the real inoculation. Once I got to the real run I was confident in my movements and had already fixed multiple technique issues with no danger to my spawn.

I really appreciate the debate going on here. Thanks to all of you for remaining constructive.

Oh, also, the water tub tek. That is totally skipping the verm roll and allowing colonization of the coir before fruiting?

They’re great for me because they’re lower maintenance and can be done in a different grow area. If I have 40 cakes and a water tub big enough for 24, I gotta do something with the other 16. Full water tub, full cabinet - I’m a happy guy.

imo the best reason to run both teks is to see which you find more fun. bulk is more steps and takes longer but the larger water reservoir can give you a bigger first flush. cakes dont have such a reservoir but you can just fruit them right away

as far as final yield is concerned, the fact that we get mixed opinions tells me the answer is probably "same yield". its been proven that myc doesnt eat coir, so the brf is the only energy source

the point that doing bulk gives you more experience with bulk is obviously valid lol no arguing with that

important: only spawn your best jars. the funky ones should be fruited as cakes. this is gonna give you some biased results but thats better than spawning bacterial cakes
