My Zapos died long ago as well. Even very light misting with atomizer killed them. Finicky little fucks  I think I'll give up on them for now.

The zaps I found in the wild were growing in dry spaces under the edges of rock outcroppings. The spaces looked like they had stayed dry for many many years and there was a defined wet/dry line with no mushrooms present on the wet side. The time of year was hot, humid, and it rained several times per day. The soil in those spots was mostly degraded limestone and was chalky and very calcium rich. Lots of insects, snakes, rodents, and other small critters make various deposits in those micro environments. There was dander and droppings and dead creature parts like bits of land crab shells eaten by predators and animal bones. The smell was umami and chalky with a very slight hint of harsh ammoniated nitrogen. There was plenty of forest debris in the surrounding area as well as full size jungle trees and everything that goes along with that. The majority of the area did not have many trees as it was at the base of a large seasonal waterfall/cliff of about 2-300 feet in height and all the boulders at the bottom made a sunnier clearing of sorts which was about half the total 100'x100' colony extent. The colony sat right on both sides of the tree line equally. There was pretty much no forest litter right where they fruited under the outcroppings, only exposed dry dirt. The rock outcroppings shielded the fruiting sites from most of the forest debris and all of the rain, and everything present was brought by animals (not to say there wasn't stuff under the surface that they were eating).  The fruits were prolific. I collected a whole backpack full and it didn't make a dent. They seem to be able to cover large areas and eat a wide variety of stuffs yet pick and choose spots to fruit prolifically. I went back to the same patch two years in a row and they were fruiting in the same exact places both years. The second year there weren't as many (about half) but it was very dry that year and had not rained very much. It was still good to see quite a bunch there anyway.

Hope some of this info is useful or was at least enjoyable to read and ponder.

Rumblestrip interesting to see azteco indoor! Congratulations!! did you also try outdoor bed too? Is it azteco from Quebec?

Adas how did evolve your zap pins? Sadly mine have aborted, will try again..

Smaltalk, nice approach with hispanica! Always good to put your eggs in different baskets, do you hope them to fruit during spring? As it was too long and needed place in FC i retired my little hispa cake thinking dumping it in the garden but didn’t do it directly just let it few days in the basement and it pinned (maybe due to cold or dryer air) I have a new cake colonizing nicely need to find new approaches and probably will also try outdoor for next autumn

Also a little question I have a subcubensis Argentina ready to fruit does it still considered just as a cube?

The appereance of those pins! You need to get those microscoped. The semilanceta/hispanica plot thickens.

If they bruise, you must picture it.

Hey V.L.
I only have them inside. The jars were colonized in December and the ground is frozen here. I believe they were collected in Nova Scotia which is right next door to Quebec. I don't really have garden space and i find the fall woodlovers do better for me indoors most years.

Adas we lose on our zap but don’t give up if you had pins we are not so far from a little success, good luck!

Nichrome thanks for the detailed habitat description!

Rumblestrip well done did you printed some? Even you prefer indoor work you can try to expand some of them to woodships somewhere outside to see if they comeback next fall..

Smalltalk I will keep you updated for instance hispa babies seem to continue to develop even still tiny..

Ps hispanica

Just streaked some 'Cosmoplex'. :dancer:

Put a few to LME to get things started. Going put some to PDYA after moving next week to get some invitro fruits.

My first noncube active grow, kind of excited about it!
