They've got the same Dr. Seuss look as zaps often do with the odd angles on the stipe.

How's this for a Dr. Seuss phenotype?

I bumped up humidity and temps and I'm getting some better cap development(thanks mycorry!).  Gills are starting to darken up a bit.  These papuana are really unique and bizarre.  Quite awe inspiring to watch as they develop.  I'm noting a lot of similarities with zapotecorum, which makes sense, as I think they are closely related?

Another nice cluster in the far corner:

The substrate is WBS spawned 1:2 to a 50/50 mix of CV and corncob pellets.  First pins took about six weeks to show up.

I have a bunch more genetics to screen through.  Can't wait to see what turns up!

They look to be hanging in there pretty well. After you get them dialed in they will likely not curl up anymore, BUT that bit of advice comes from my Monotub-only experience with them. I have no idea what potential variables are introduced from setup to setup.

I am amazed that you have done all of this on grain spawn, and with WBS of all things. I do all my work with sterilized substrate in bags. It seems like no matter how hard I try I cant seem to get the slower exotics to work with grain, but I imagine that that is due to some overlooked nuance in my cultural practices.

Paups are closely related to Zaps. My best performing papuana(Paup2; the one in the pic before) I had DNA barcoded back in april. It turns out that Papuana is very closely related to Zapotecorum.

Loving the papuana pix and all the variations I'm seeing!

Here is a spawn jar of papuana on oats that decided to start pinning. Forgot about this one been busy trimming weed.

Cool rhizo growth characteristics

Not sure what I will do with this jar let it go like so or birth it and see if they develop like a pf tek cake of papuana

That is a solid looking papuana culture, my friend!  I can only imagine what kind of fruits that might put out for ya spawned to one of your bulk trays.
Keep us posted . . .

I pulled some prints and clones off of my recent tray, so overall a success.  But I have a lot of work to do yet with this amazing species.

Well I tried to birth that oat grain jar but it fell a part in doing so. So I mixed it with sub and we'll see how it does.

I checked the 1/2 gallon jar of sterilized sub and saw it pinning as well? This jar is almost 100% colonized but not quite ready to birth

Here are some subsecotioides from an outside container

Nice Viridis, I hope your birthed jar are going to do well. I really like how the ropy myc turns to that yellow/brown color.

Have you got a photo of your papuana culture on agar?

Transfers went really well. Made 5 from the Banderillensis and 7 from the Neoxalapensis. Once I've got enough plates I'll try keeping a couple nexalapensis in complete dark. They make a lot of pigment and I suspect that is light induced.

GOOD TO HEAR! :dancer:

I only got the fagicola swab to germinate so far. The other three are either taking their time or have been overtaken by penicillin/aspergillus. I plan on getting the potential fagicola to a lab for DNA sequencing once I get cleaned up.

Did you have any contam issues with the initial swabbing?

All I got from the Fagicola was mold. Looks like Penicillium and Trichoderma. Under the microscope I could see the Fagicola spores germinating but it was just too quickly overtaken by the mold which germinated first and grew much quicker. I still have a little left to work with so I'll try some more aggressive tactics to see if I can get a colony going.

Glad to hear you were able to get a good culture of that Fagicola going.

Hispanica from the Capitan. This is all I ever get is a feathery myc. This is my 2nd year trying to get it to eat grain.

Wondering if this is a mycovirus.
