After 8 months of indoor failures, I think I have a single P. papuana fruit in my outdoor dump pile.  I've been tossing both P. papuana and P. section Zap.(Australia) in the pile, but I'm leaning towards papuana.  Thoughts, anyone?





Edit:  Damn, realized I have some ovoid spawn in the pile as well.  Chances are this is an ovoid, although it doesn't pass the smell test.  Have to wait to see what else pops up . . .

If that was an ovoid it'd be blue as hell, I'd wager that's not active too.

That's what I'm saying. Super slow unless I've yet to pick a good dish. I had one bag of manure/hay, my typical pan mix almost colonize. Then trich just fucking rushed right past. Buried it outside but no fruits. Think I know which patch it is for fall.

Here's a collection of my last failed batch of 3 LCs and agar. Some agar->grain too in smaller tupperwares.


I've had success with other species dropping a small amount of substrate on a good dish, then scooping that colonized mess into a larger vessel with more substrate.

Woodies love it!

The photos aren't great, but there is weak blueing at the base and a blue tinge to partial veil remnants on the stem.  Ovoids have a highly variable phenotype and don't always show much staining. Regardless, I can't be sure what species is popping here until more show up.  We'll wait and see.

Those hygrophanous type of mushrooms always sketch me out. Even my wood patches I really hate consuming unless they show the bluing. My woodies get me nervous and I have to check 'em multiple ways to be sure. Try printing?

I hear ya'.  Don't feel like guessing with outdoor fruits.  If these are my ovoids, which I suspect, it wont be long before they take over the whole pile.  Things are like a weed in every bed where I've spawned them.

On another note, I've found some knots and tiny pins in a couple of indoor papuana trays.  They've been in the FC for 2 months.  We'll see what they decide to do.  I'm working off a wild print and hard up for something to clone.  This species requires some patience.

No big thing, but I was happy with the growth of this Ps. Subaeruginosa culture in this jar of alder sawdust. I'm going to expand this to a substrate of pine shavings mixed with some other wood chips.

Hard at work with Hispanica for almost half a year now, not posting the shoeboxes yet cause 2-3 straight up molded.

really cool stuff guys! i love seeing so many people working with exotics

here was my first success with ps caerulescens

i really struggled with this one, the grain and sub always colonized very aggressively and it always looked great on agar, but the damn thing just would not fruit

i was about to give up on it, well over 3 months in fruiting conditions fully colonized, the casing was starting to grow moss lol...

but finally got a few fruits! very cool looking species

Was this jar inoculated with agar wedges? How did you get different growth points like that? The growth is beautiful, I'd love to know how to inoculate like that.

Subs grow all around here. I've seen them in peoples gardens, on the side of roads, in parks, on the sides of motorways, playgrounds.

Once you get a proper patch going, you could try this method.

If you have a good harvest you can easily make many new patches using this method.

c10h12n2o, nice work on the caerulescens; those fruits don't come easily . . .

I've been very fortunate lately to have received a number of uncommon wild prints of various species(thanks to generous users on this board).  I've been working on a project to store genetic banks from these prints.  I've lost too many lines in the past by relying on prints as a long-term storage method, and I've turned to dH20 storage as a way to put projects on hold and to capture some of the diversity from the print. 

Basicallly, I get a couple of good germ plates and grow out somewhere between 10-20 clean T1's.  Agar plugs are taken from the circumference of each T1 and dropped into a vial of dH20. Give 'am a good shake and done.

Wild P. aucklandiae.  I remember Inski mentioning that it took 8 years of trial and error to get fruits.  Should be a snap, right?


Wild P. papuana.  I have three wild prints that I've backed up.  Fruiting trials in progress:


2 and 5 ml vials ready for storage.  The ziploc container holds about forty different cultures.  Just imagine keeping and rotating slants for all of these:


A bit of work up front, but I feel less pressure to get fruits and prints. In theory, these should keep indefinitely at room temperature.  Recent tests showed viability after 5 years for P. mexicana, and after 2-3 years for Pan. cyanescens and P. zapotecorum.

This also would seem like a great way to protect rare species that may be threatened with loss of habitat, etc.

I'm also thinking about doing the dH2O2 storage method.
Recently received some prints of never cultivated before species and I'd like to share some swabs with any of you who might be interested in keeping them alive and hopefully multiply the spores.
