Hi all, does anyone happen to know of any vendors that have either Hoogshagenii or Hispanica spores available?  These are somewhat hard to come across and I don't want to insult members through a trade because I don't really have anything that is in the same league.

Why "insult"? Maybe trade more prints with them or something. Don't be afraid to ask for what you want, especially on this site. People here are more generous than any other place perhaps, in my experience. I've received very many spore prints and the people wanted nothing in return.

Pluteus salcinius, The Willow Shield. Never been more excited to receive a print. This is going to agar tomorrow.

This and you also never know what people are holding and what they want.  Sometimes you have enough exotic prints and you just want some classic cubes.

If someone shows up with Hoogshagenii please let us know!

I promise one day I'll try to find that species in the wild in the province of Tucuman, Argentina. It's definitely one of the prettiest actives I've seen.

"Guzmán (1983) reported that this mushroom grows at 1000-1800 meters in elevation (Argentina) and is commonly seen by coffee growers who report massive flushes coming up in unison and soon disappearing."

Apart from the cube jar, there are these subs marked semi/fine and Hispanica fruiting now:

Hopefully they are not more fimetaria

Has anyone had success growing zaps or paps without any kind of grain, including BRF? I'm talking about going from LC directly to a substrate that has no grain of any type in it (probably a straw/compost mix). I've not had luck with Paps on grain at all. They really don't seem to like it, though I've only tried on rye and not BRF cakes or BRF+Straw+compost+etc cakes.

Both times I fruited Papuana, I started with my grain mix, oats, barley, millet, annual RGS in equal volumes. I also made a bag of WBR and pearled barley to test for active mycelium, it colonized with no problem. My mycelium wasn't active BTW.

https://mycotopia.net/topic/110938-psilocybe-papuana/page-1

I haven't fruited zaps yet but zap and Australian sect zapo both take to my grain mix well. Here is zap 'Chicon Nindo' on 1Tbsp oats and 1 Tbsp barley about ready to g2g to a pint of mixed grains.

It's twin was transferred to a pint of mixed grains 2 nights ago.

I work exclusively grain free with exotics. I directly inoculate containers(bags, jars, etc...) of sterilized substrate with LC. For me, exotics move too slowly to deal with grain, but many people here work with it and have no problems. After waiting however many months it takes to fully colonize the substrate I then remove the lid/bag top, case and set into fruiting conditions.

Zaps and paups both should work with just straw/verm/brf. I've had them grow just fine on all sorts of simple and complicated recipes. However, if you do go with a complicated recipe make sure that your extra ingredients don't change the PH of the substrate too much. Proper PH = bioavailable nutrients. I've found that both of those species work well with a little bit of clay added in the mix, so my straw/verm/brf containers usually have a reddish color. I had a 1lb bag of that recipe with zaps fruit for almost two years strait before I accidently drowned it.

If you are having trouble with pinning you likely have selected a culture that is a stubborn fruiter. My suggestion would be to select several cultures from the same germination and fruit them all side by side with small mason jars of substrate to find your fruiter. OR leave some plates out and clone an eventual dish pin.

Thank you both for the replies.

Mycorry, I take it then that you have never used a sub without BRF added to it?

I have! I have fruited zaps, caeru, subtrops, pseudoaztecorum, mexicana, gym purpuratus, and a few other on strait choir or straw. They worked but the results were underwhelming. However, the underwhelming aspect of their growth was likely due to something I did wrong.

Try it out! Make a bunch of half pint widemouth jars of just straw or choir then inoculate them and show us what you come up with.

Will do thanks again! My plan is to do this in mycobags with filter patches. I will send each culture to 1 bag of sub that has grains mixed in and another that has no grains. After full colonization, I'll open the bags, case, and put them in my fruiting tent and see what happens. Will probably try some bags with BRF and some others with rye grain.

Thanks again!

Good to hear!

For myco bags be sure to use a hot glue gun to shut the hole caused by the injection.  My best strategy goes something like this:

1:Swab injection spot with hydrogen peroxide wipes
2:(Optional)Spray/wipe the exterior of the needle with hydrogen peroxide to prevent any contams on the outside of the syringe from making in the bag.
3:get the needle red hot and use a smooth confident motion to pierce the bag.
4:wait 5 seconds for the needle to cool down then push the plunger
5:Immediately apply hot glue to the hole then wait a minute for it to cool.

I tried that once before and melted the mycobag, creating a long drooping hole. It was hilarious. Though I didn't think it was at the time. I was also trying to do it in a SAB lol.

My plan this time was to just put a blog of silicone on the outside of the bag after PCing it, let that dry overnight as the bag cools from the PC cycle and then inject through that silicone blob. Basically a SHIP.
