Another good way to do it is to place the damp-rid in a coffee filter and secure with a rubber band.

Damp Rid is more effective in practice than silica gel, being able to soak up more moisture before becoming saturated. Silica gel has the advantage of being reusable, is non toxic, but also much more expensive. There are also many grades of silica gel, some being able to absorb only about 10% of its weight in water, others as high as 35%. A decent grade will cost $25-$30 per pound.

Absorbtion rate of silica gel also depends on relative humidity. At higher humidity levels [50+%] it works very well, but as the air drops below 40% RH it becomes less and less effective. This makes it hard to get a really "crisp" dry unless you use a lot of silica gel. You can pick up a big "refill" carton of damp rid for under $4 at any hardware store, and it will be enough to dry several pounds of "fruit".
