Definitely get the agar going, and oats will do u just as good super cheap. I used to buy rye berries at Whole Foods for a buck and a half a pound. The only good thing about that was the woman you see shopping at Whole Foods; a real eyeopener since I usually shop at Walmart.  I always use clones. I don't make any efforts to isolate, but every time I put agar into a batch of grain jars I transfer a little into a couple plates. I have no idea what my genetics are at this point, but the results are highly variable on the first flush. I usually get a full canopy in shoeboxes but sometimes the stems are thin and sometimes nice and thick. Fuzzy feet do indicate you should increase FAE but they're not a big problem.

I think the biggest mistake people make with oats is not drying them enough. They definitely need to get hydrated enough when boiling (30-40 minutes). You want to see some burst grains but not many. I dry them 24 hours in wire collanders with a large fan set on high blowing on them. They dry mainly by stirring them, and getting differnt grains under the fan. My 24 hours include sleeping time and a long work shift but I stir them every half hour when I'm around. If you're around all the time you could do it in less time. Some people spread them out which surely dries them faster, but that's not practical in my house.
