if anyone asks, you are simply "looking for edible field mushrooms". no lie there 😜

it is really none of their business, especially if you are not on private land or somewhere public without "no foraging" rules (unlike the new forest). i have had arsey people ask and i retort with "what are you doing here?". they usually shy away at that point.

on the other hand, i have had good natured folk laugh and say "i hope they're magical ones you're looking for" on numerous occasions

i personally never forage on private land unless i have prior consent to do so (bless those kind people). there are many farmers who will allow you to do it if you ask nicely. i believe their main concern with strangers in their fields is the safety of their livestock.

staging elaborate lost key or ring scenarios is too suspicious & contrived for my liking. also, you may get a good natured soul who offers to help on your search. that wouldn't be much fun, would it?

as an added layer to this game. i genuinely like to take field pictures and pick litter when i go out foraging. that helps with me feeling more confident and comfortable whilst kneeling and searching around in the grass.

in the absolute worst case scenario, if an "official" type person shows interest in you, having a litter pick bag could be a godsend as your foraging mesh bag/carrier bag/takeaway tub can easily be put in your litter collecting bag as something you litter picked along the way 😜 thank the goddess it has never come to that 🤞

i digress, go out enjoy nature and respect the land and you will be rewarded in more ways than one!

Elevated sheep pastures, preferably the day after some rainfall, are always a good shout for starters. I always look around tufts of sedges and alongside paths. I would check a range of photos for ID reference if you are new to them. The caps change their colouring depending on hydration level. If unsure, always ask someone for ID help.

I find great joy in harvesting them and they are my favourite psychedelic mushroom. Good luck!
